Bendis and Reis reach for the stars!
Brian Michael Bendis and Ivan Reis begin the latest Superman series with a story picking up the plot threads started in the Man of Steel limited series in the most energetic and massive scale way possible. The planet Earth is trapped in the Phantom Zone with the latest and most dangerous of villains and it is up to Superman and the best of Earth's heroes to get it out before the damage is catastrophic! This story arc is incredibly well suited to the artistic talents of Ivan Reis, one of the best comic book artists working today. Having been behind the stunning Green Lantern event: Blackest Night with Geoff Johns and the inspired Multiversity with Grant Morrison he brings the big, cosmic superheroics like no other and gives us Superman at his most iconic but with the detail to pull off memorable character moments as well as massive battles. The story works well as a stand alone providing exciting adventure centred on a mission to save the world from certain destruction but continues to weave in the longer term plotlines of The Unity Saga (of which this is only the first half) dealing with Rogol Zaar and Jor-el and the Galactic Circle conspiracy as well as the destiny of Jon Kent. It's a must read from one of the best creative team in modern comics.

Wonderful art but it is not my Superman/Kal-El
It is great art but Ivan Reis just doesn't know how to draw Superman. Ivan check out Jose Garcia Lopez, Neal Adams, and Curt Swan. Or even the animated Superman as a template. He just makes Kal-El look like Bruce Wayne in Cosplay. The narrative hangs together well enough but I'm completely distracted by his Bruce Wayne hair. The whole point of that distinctive stubborn forelock was to distinguish him from the other brunette blue-eyed DC icon. I will always feel that way about this artist's Superman artwork.

Rogul Zarr sucks
Never have I seen such a more worthless villain than Rogul Zarr, this book has so many issue with Rogul Zarr being the main one. This book proves that Bendis cannot write Superman at all (and plenty other characters that show up in this book for that matter). And I’m saying all this without talking about the ending.
