Great upgrade from Timex Ironman
I bought this watch to replace a Timex Ironman that died after a few years of service. I liked the Timex because of its low price, huge display, and very easy to use all of the watch functions. I've had the Casio GW7900B-1 watch for about a month now and I don't miss my old Timex one bit. There are several comments about the inverse display being hard to read, but I find it easy to read in any lighting conditions. I would say that you have to use the backlight a little more than you would on a traditional display (for example a little earlier at dusk), but that's just a new habit to get used to. With the backlight on you can read it fine under low light conditions. The backlight actually seems brighter than what I had on my Timex. Display of numbers is not as big as on the Timex (nothing out there really is), but this watch shows more information and the display is big enough that I don't have any problems reading it. It is very easy and intuitive to use all of the features on the watch. Maybe not quite as simple as the Timex, but pretty darn close, and you have more features like moon and tide info on this one to learn how to use. Read the user's manual one time and you'll understand how to use everything. Obviously the price of this watch is more than the Timex, but this watch is built like a tank and I think it will last forever. I also think it is more attractive than the Timex. I wear it to work (office job) and people have told me "nice looking watch." It is a large watch, but looks good and is comfortable to wear. The watch battery power indicator has been on full ever since I received it. I work in an office all day under fluorescent lights and am outside an hour or two in the evenings, plus outside more on weekends. That seems to be enough to keep it fully charged without doing anything special. Time sync with atomic clock signal has worked perfectly every night and even automatically adjusted for daylight savings time. I leave the watch sitting on my dresser when I go to bed and it syncs without any special effort required. I live in Colorado, so I am close to the source of the atomic clock signal in Ft. Collins. As others have mentioned, the screws on the front face are there just for looks. You can move them around with your fingers, but it doesn't seem like they are going to fall out or anything. Overall, this is a great watch and I am looking forward to having it for many years.

Great Casio Watch
In all this watch did not disappoint in any way. There are a few complexities with it but those are to be expected of a watch in this price range. I was looking for a watch to replace the G-Shock I lost a long time ago when I was 15. I had it for literally 6 years when it was ripped off my wrist while I was sailing. The strap was cut through and the watch dropped into the ocean. It is probably still sitting there telling the time as we speak... PROS -A great sturdy watch, rubber coated exterior bug rugged buttons thick straps metal clasp. -A great look, I could wear this with a polo and jeans or a nice suit if I really wanted to.It is a clean crisp rugged looking watch. -it is waterproof, shock resistant, and everything else you could possibly want. -IT IS SOLAR POWERED! Yes that is right solar powered. Say good bye to having a dead watch. That was the one thing I disliked about my original Casio so much; when it went dead it took me a week to get the battery replaced. No more! -The solar panels are well hidden, unless you are looking for them you will NOT find them. They are hidden into the design of the watch quite well. -I have had this thing for a few months now and can say with confidence it has never dipped below the HIGH charge mark. I don't even have to change the way I normally wear a watch either. It just seems to glean every bit of spare solar energy it can get and uses it all to charge the battery. -The manual is well written and flows easily from one function to another CONS -It is not bulletproof...but is likely bullet resistant knowing its construction. -The MANUAL...Dear sweet lord the manual is intense. It is the size of a small travelers bible that you can put easily in your pocket. And it is just about as thick as one if not thicker. This thing has more functionality than any other watch I have ever owned...while that isn't saying much if you plan on using ANY advanced functionality of this device you need to read the manual. -The display can be a bit challenging to read in the dark if you do not light the face up. Good news I found if you quickly twist your wrist like you want to read the time, when it is dark the face auto lights up for you. It does not however do this when it is bright enough to read the face during the day. it is almost like it has a light sensor in it and will only auto light up when there isn't enough light to read it alone. WRAP-UP As far as the line of Casio watches goes this one was a good pick for me. I have a big arm and well a HUGE wrist; this watch fit perfectly and looks great. It is rugged enough for me not to have to worry about taking it hiking, biking, or accidentally hitting it against something while walking or running. They just don't make watches like this anymore...or I thought they didn't.

A real winner
My first Casio G-Shock (the GW500A-1V G-Shock Atomic Solar Watch) lasted approximately 10 years before the battery gave out. The resin wrist band lasted the whole time. I wanted a different look this time around, so I purchased the Atomic Rescue about two months ago. With its rugged handsomeness, surely this must be the John Wayne of Casio's solar product line. Based on my prior experience, I'm sure this watch will have the precision and accuracy of "Duke" Morrison in a shootout. However, its durability and lasting power remain to be seen. It's light-weight to wear, its large size notwithstanding. Following the directions when it arrived, I reset the time zone to LAX. Since it was running a minute fast, I manually directed it to receive the radio signal from Fort Collins, Colorado. No problem. Then I turned on the auto-light feature so that a turn of the wrist illuminates the face of the watch, which is hard to read in a low-light environment. So far, the solar battery has stayed at the medium charged level, and the timepiece hasn't required a trip to a sunlit window to recharge itself. If this method turns out to be a problem, I can always toggle off the auto-light capability and press the G switch to light up the face of the watch. This method avoids unnecessary illuminations that could wear down the battery. That's the way (a.el off) I ran my first G-shock, and without a problem. I don't expect the watch to fall apart -- that is, for the screws at the top of the product to fall out, as some people have experienced. Since I am a easy on watches, I can't promise this Casio will take a pounding and come back "ticking." I live in Southern California. To pick up the correct time from Fort Collins at night, the watch sits on a dresser in the recommended position, five feet away from a window facing directly south. Fort Collins is about 800 miles NE of my home as the crow flies. This operation has been 88% effective over the past two months. While my wife teases me about my rugged-looking watch, she is not loath to asking me for the correct time on occasion. A five-star product that augments my toy collection with a measure of practicality, class and style.

Solid watch, with a couple of issues...
Ok, so it's a big watch, sits over 1/2 inch above your wrist, and if you're not into high tides and the phases of the moon it pretty much tells you the time and date locally and time in another city if you set it up. Nothing much else on the face, although other functions can be brought to the dial like a stopwatch, alarms, etc. It's not hard to set up but you do have to be able to follow directions to do it unless you're one of those "I've got 27 G-Shock watches" people. So the good news: It's well-built; It's light enough given the size to not bother you; It charges in sunlight and adjusts the time, and so far the time has been spot-on; I've got it set up for the light to come on if it's darker outside and I tip my wrist up, that's a nice function. The bad news? Believe me, it's not easy to read the time in a lot of lighting conditions (thus the light coming on helps...) - and even in light you can get a glare from the crystal that doesn't let you read the dial, so you're twisting around trying to keep the light but eliminate the glare...; And the four little screws do fall out, so if you buy this just pull them out (mine came out with a tweezers) and glue them in (I used Loctite Super Glue). But not before I lost two of them, so now I'm looking for replacement screws. Don't let that happen to you. Overall, a good watch. Personally I wouldn't buy it again, it's a bit big for me and I'd rather be able to read the time when I need to, but if you go for G-Shock watches or that style this one is a good one. Worth the money, worth four stars.

Great Negative Display Gshock!
I received this in the mail from Amazon last week. Great watch at a great price. Let me first say lm not a big fan of negative display watches. I have over 30 Gshocks and 4 Protreks. Now this one is the 2nd one l own. I also have the Gwx 6900 gshock. Which is a great watch to. This watch is Atomic Solar Powered. That means you never have to set the time, or change batteries. Set it once and that's it. This watch is really compfortable on yourWrist. I have 3 different models like this from the Rescue series. I have the g7900-1 which is a great watch but runs on a battery. I also have the gw7900-1 both have positive display. The Gw 7900-1 is Atomic Solar Powered to. This is the watch that a lot of Navy Seals wear. Also the watch is perfect for a every day watch. So if your looking for a watch with negative display that you can see. Buy this. The watch has a great back light for night time use. I have all kinds of Gshocks. I have the Rangeman gshock which is a great, great watch. I have the King GXW56-1BJF gshock. I have 4 Mudman gshocks 2 Gulfman gshocks. The gwm5610-1 and the gw6900-1vgshock and way to many more to mention. I have been wearing gshocks for almost 34 years, since the first one came out in 1983. So l have a lot of experience when it comes to Gshocks. This is a great watch for any wrist size. I have a 7 inch wrist and it fits perfect. So if you want a watch with negative display than look no further. You can buy a better watch for the price under $100.00. Buy it now before the price goes up. Make sure you buy it at Amazon. I bought 12 gshocks from them in the last year. Amazon always has what your looking for. I'm a Prime Member. 2 day delivery guarantee. Enjoy the watch or any other gshock watch you buy. Just remember if you like gshocks. Once you buy one you will probably want to buy more gshocks. Because they have so many different types. To meet all your activities. From swimming, snorkeling, diving, hiking, bike riding. They have gshocks for casual or for formal wear. Gshocks are the best watch money can buy in my opinion. Thanks and enjoy your watch or watches.

Love the watch
I have fallen in love with this watch. I bought it based on price and also the solar and automatic atomic clock synchronization. While others have stated that it's hard to read in low light sometimes, I don't find it a problem. I'm an amateur astronomer and coaxing my eyes to see dim things seems normal to me. This watch isn't that bad though. You can always press the big G button to light up the time and date. While I didn't buy it for the purpose of knowing the phases of the moon, this will help me greatly for astronomy. I sometimes do like to look at the moon with the scope, but rarely. Usually I want a moonless night to see the faint fuzzies of galaxies, star clusters etc that I need a dark site for. I also really like the display for the tide level. Makes me feel connected to nature. I also like listening to shortwave radio and having Universal Time on hand is really nice. I can always compute it but I forget sometimes how to compute if it's daylight savings or not. I have a job where I need to show up right on time, so the automatic atomic timekeeping is a wonderful feature. I also love not having to worry about a battery since it's solar. The watch also looks great. I like the slightly dark slightly blue color most of the face shows under certain lighting. There is a mystique to it in it's low brightness that has me awed when I look at it sometimes. The stopwatch I use to calculate how long I've been walking. I walk about 3 miles per day. All around, for me, this is one great watch and will replace it in a heartbeat if it is lost or stolen. When I received it the clock was off, probably since it was in a metal container. I followed the instructions to manually sync with the atomic clock and after 8 minutes it got the right time. Normally it's syncs at night around midnight automatically.

Great watch, durable and well worth the money
Exceptional timepiece. I've been wearing this style of watch for many years (my 3rd watch of this model), love the atomic timekeeping and solar power. I never have to worry the battery is dying and the time is off. I'm on of those punctual people, almost OCD-ish when it comes to being early for things. My first watch was the victim of stupidity, I took it off and set it on a stack of lumber one summer thinking it would be okay, until it got destroyed by a forklift setting a pallet of lumber on the stack. My 2nd watch lasted almost 5 years, even with the glass cracked, and the white around the watch face had been worn and faded to almost a light blue. The crack did it in as I had to plug my hand into water and that killed the watch. So hopefully this watch will last years like the previous one did, or even longer. Pros - Atomic timekeeping - never have to set your time again. Solar power - no battery to replace every few years Power save - watch blanks out the display at night or in dark areas for a time, saving the battery Moon and tide features. I like the moon phase for fishing, but the tide phase is worthless for me, I'm 14 hours from the coast. Cons - Watch is large (I like the size but some may not). from outer edge to outer edge is 2 inches across, the glass face is 1.25 inches in diameter, about the size of a 50c coin.

now you might say thats a small thing but right now its annoying to have to bring my wrist parallel to the ...
First let me say im starting with 3 stars as this watch just arrived on time and as advertised, the issues I have may become non issues as I get to know the watch at which point I think 4 stars will be warranted. The biggest issue Im having is being able to read the grey on black numbers and other info on the face of the watch. At most arm resting angles glare from the room wash out the numbers causing me to make a concerted effort to turn my wrist to bring the watch face more square to my eyes, this makes it difficult to "just give a glance" instead I have to turn my wrist, now you might say thats a small thing but right now its annoying to have to bring my wrist parallel to the ground to just to discern any information. The other issue is the ridiculous owners manual...as stated by others it makes a fiasco of trying to accomplish learning something with out flipping front to back to middle and back again. The watch is large but not outlandishly so in relation to the style of other large watches you see today. The band seems comfortable, however my wrist started to sweat as soon as I put it on. Im not sure if I completely understand the manual in regards to the tide chart, I get the feeling that you need to know the offset of where you are in relation to your home city setting on the watch, at which point you need to set that into the watch. The beach where I fish is 200 miles from my home city so the tide differential might be substantial. As I said Im starting with 3 stars hoping to go to 4 after I get to know the watch. Im going scuba diving next week so it should be a good durability test for it. I will update after a month or so. EDIT 10/15/2015 : Im sticking with 3 stars as the watch is just ok. First: the band is pretty comfortable so that's not an issue. Second: It took a solid 2-3 weeks b4 my eyes adjusted to the display, Until they adjusted they wanted to read the black background area as the time display and the grey time display as the background. A way to think of this is with that optical illusion that is a picture a vase that is also a picture of 2 people facing each other. That was the effect on my eyes causing the watch to look like gibberish until my brain flipped the background to black and the numbers to grey. Very annoying, and still hard to read at any angle other than straight on Third: The illumination is just ok. In complete darkness it is adequate but in low light it doesn't really do the job. Fourth: The manual is functional after you practice with it I suppose Didn't get to really test the tide thing yet so there is still always the possibility for improvement In Summary: This is an ok watch that didn't break at 100" under water, not having to need a battery is great eventually I suppose, the display kinda sucks but it is a functional watch. Is it worth the $100 bucks? Probably more like $75 IMHO but its still working and no ornamental screws have fallen out yet sooo...
