I needed a guide, something more than just a quick online video. Enter David Swenson's "Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual." This book quickly became my absolute go-to, my silent teacher, my spiral-bound guru. What makes this book so incredible is its practicality. The spiral binding is a game-changer – you can actually lay it flat next to your mat without wrestling with pages! But beyond the smart design, the content is gold. The photos are clear, showing the postures step-by-step, and crucially, Swenson includes variations for every single pose. This is HUGE. It immediately makes the practice feel accessible, no matter your current level of flexibility or strength. It's not about forcing yourself into a shape, but about finding the pose that works for your body today. He covers the Primary and Intermediate Series, breaking down the vinyasa count, the breath, and the drishti (gaze points) in a way that's easy to follow. It demystifies the sequence and helps you build confidence whether you're practicing alone or just want to deepen your understanding of what's happening in a class. This manual has had a profound impact on my consistency. Having such a clear, user-friendly resource right there makes rolling out my mat and starting the practice so much less intimidating. It feels supportive and encouraging, like David Swenson himself is right there, patiently guiding you through. If you practice Ashtanga, or are even just curious about starting, this book is, in my opinion, essential. It's detailed, incredibly practical, and makes the journey into this dynamic practice feel achievable and deeply rewarding. It's more than just a manual; it's a true companion for your practice.

I am pursuing ashtanga yoga quite seriously, and this is the only book out there that is really helpful as a self-guide when you want to practice on your own. My issue is that I don't always remember the order of the postures and all the things you need to pay attention to when I practice on my own. This manual is great for the following reasons: - It's a binder book so pages are easy to flip - Each position in the series is shown visually in a variety of levels: the final level to aim for, and the "easier" levels to aim for if you are not there yet. This makes the book very safe and appropriate for beginners. And also less discouraging. - In addition to the full photos of the above, you get step by step procedures and transitions, as well as guidelines on what to work on while you are in the position. Downsides: I wish it was less heavy and came in color. Ideally there should be a Kindle version for traveling and audio playlist for each position, so that you can practice on the go. Right now the book is too heavy to travel with.

I just started taking Ashtanga classes at a local studio. I asked my instructor for a recommendation to help me practice the asanas at home and this was what she directed me to. It's perfect. The book is designed well, meaning both the ease of using the spiral bound, and layout showing each pose in great detail. David shows the pose in a clear photo, with written instructions on how to enter the pose. Plus, he includes at least two modifications for every asana for those less flexible or with limitations preventing them from achieving the full pose. Toward the end of the book he shows the "full flow" that shows snapshots of the pose in order for the Standing Series, Primary Series and Advanced. He also has the flow of Sun Salutation A & B. There are options for various vinyasa to plug in between the different asanas. I'm a total beginner and have found this very easy to follow and not intimidating. I feel I'll grow in my practice with this and use it throughout my Ashtanga education.

Of the many Ashtanga yoga teachers I have had the good fortune to study with, David Swenson is the best. This book is a MUST HAVE, even if you have a regular Ashtanga teacher in your area, which of course many people do not. Each pose of the primary and second series is thoroughly explained, with helpful commentary and suggestions for modifying each posture to make it more appropriate for your strength and flexibility level. There is also a helpful section on the philosophy behind the system. Your local teacher does not have time to go into this much detail in a regular class, but gaining the insight that David shares in this book is extremely helpful for taking your practice to a deeper level and broadening your understanding of the practice, whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner. And if you don't have a local teacher, this book is invaluable. As an added bonus, it is spiral bound, so it will sit open on your floor and you can refer to it while you practice.

I have purchased several Ashtanga yoga books, but this one by far is THE BEST! This book gets five stars for being user friendly, especially during practice. Each asana is described in detail, with variations to fit your level, also at the end of the book is just photos of the series. There are also modified time versions for those who are not able to do the full primary and intermediate series )i.e 15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc..) What is truly beneficial is you never have to worry about the pages flipping, as this book is wired bound. A great book, that you will get great mileage out of. David Swenson's passion for Ashtanga Yoga really shines through, and is inviting to the practitioner, and not intimidating. Clear and concise. Great illustrations and instructions on each pose.

I have been practicing yoga for half a year now, and I just can't get enough of it. I'm as interested in the asanas as in the philosophy of yoga. I bought this book because it is required in most teacher trainings and I thought it would be a good guide. And it is!! The poses are very detailed, the pictures very descriptive, and it also includes short forms of 15, 30 and 45 minutes, for not-enough-time-for-the-whole-series people (where I include myself). Doesn't have the five stars because I am missing some anatomy tips, how you have to feel the pose physically and what you are working, like muscles being strengthened, internal organs being massaged, part of the body being stretched... that can be found in other yoga books, though. I would definitely recommend this book!!!

I have been using this book for years and it is my primary guide for Ashtanga Yoga. Most Ashtanga books show someone in each pose as if anyone can just pop into it. Nice to have a goal but for the less flexible that isn't really very useful. That is where David's book succeeds where others fail...there are step by step instructions and photos for each asana to help people who can't just get right into a pose. Many of the poses I will probably never be able to fully get into but with David's starting points it gave me way to get started. Over the years I have found that I am progressing and this book helps you move along in each asana. This book makes what Pattabhi Jois says about practicing..."practice and all is coming"...more accessible for average people. One thing I should add is that I learned the primary series from a great instructor but for the last six years have lived hundreds of miles from the nearest Ashtanga instructor. Ashtanga Yoga by David Swenson has really helped me keep my practice going.

I've been practicing ashtanga for years now and I still reference this book. David has one of the most approachable, easy to follow and laid back approaches to ashtanga. I just love how he offers reasonable and accessible accommodations to all postures in primary and intermediate series, which is sometimes considered a "no no" in some ashtanga schools of thought. I personally prefer David's approach and do not endorse a 6 days a week of primary series until you've "mastered" it which could take years approach. Our bodies need variety and the front body openings offered in second series. And besides, lets face it you'll encounter even 3rd series postures in a regular general ed vinyasa class and have probably done them just fine in those classes. Sorry for the long digression- basically I love David's approach and explanations of everything from the breath bandhas and drishti's to the unique vinyasas of ashtanga all the way through to breaking down even the most challenging asanas. This is a must, especially for home practitioners who can't get to a shala for mysore style.
