Just don't bother
I thought because i liked Tropico 2 Pirate Cove and because most of the reviews were good that i'd enjoy it but i didn't. It was dull and boring. The graphics and sound was better but that's it. I really wouldn't waste your money or bother.

Tropico
Disappointed with limited graphics and random walking of the inhabitants - why don't they walk on roads created ? Easy to get bored.

Tropico Gold
For people who've never played tropico - this is it. Choose a communist leader, and control your island. You can control the people in a two ways, either oppress them and make them fear you and hope they dont rise against you, or treat them well and hope they vote you back in. You can also decide whether to run the island on communits or capitalist principles. For people who played this before... Dont bother. Hang on to your original copy. There are few differences. Basically there are a few more high level buildings and a few more scenarios, but thats about it. To conclude... Tropico is a brilliant game, it is simply that the expansion does not go anywhere near enough. So if you've got it already i would stick with it. But if you are a new player, then go for it, you might as well.

If you like repetitiveness...
As someone who likes strategy games in general (e.g. civilisation, etc...) , this game unfortunately just doesn't do it for me. A little too much repetitiveness. It is "cute" but the comedy value doesn't last long.

Genius!
I love this game. It is an absolutly genius game. The original was great, but the Gold version is, oh, so much better. With new buildings, edicts, scenarios and random events, Tropico Gold will keep you going and going and going and going and never get boring! This game is worthy of a place on any game shelf! It features you, a president of a small caribbean islend (which you can customise) in a complex political sim where you must look after, house, feed and entertain your citizens whilst keeping up a healthy, money making economy. This game is a little tough to begin with so I would not advise it to you if you are the sort of person who will get annoyed if you can't do it. But after a while you find your own combination of moves that work for you and the genius thing about it is that your way is probably unique! So if you want a more advanced simcity, Tropico Gold is definitely for you!

A forgotten classic
Tropico employs tactical skills and sharp leadership and is by no means a walk in the park. The game sits level with Sim City in terms of the challenge of raising a stable income and pleasing your public. In a nutshell, Tropico lands you on a small, barely inhabited island and relies upon you building a town in which your earn as much dosh as humanly possible through the maniplulation of trade, taxes and legislation. Certain aspects of gameplay can be modified on a sliding scale of government leniency, from relaitve freedom of speech and media, to absolute control of the peoples' minds and souls. What I particularly enjoyed about this game was its capability to operate like titles aimed for younger audiences such as The Sims and Sim City, all the while having the scope to be a heavy-handed, almost criminal-orientated style of game. This is evident through the player's ability to have tourists or residents 'cancelled' at will by your military guard, or just locked up forever. I tend to find that graphics are not a pressing issue for this genre of game. Yes, they are somewhat grainy and the texture resolution is minimal, but the fun comes from within the gameplay and not purely from the visuals (at least with Tropico). Overall, I would definitely recommend this game for anyone who wishes to revisit a blast from the past. Hours of fun guaranteed!

Brilliant ,Quick, cartooney strategy game.
I'm a big Civilization fan having played one through to four and have to say Tropico stands along side it. Its not that Tropico is anything like as deep of a game, it isn't, but if you struggle to find the time for strategy games nowadays it could be for you. A full game lasts one evening and can take very different shapes. Tropico takes place on a random Caribbean island in 1950 during the cold war. Choose your profile from that of every major South American dictator from Castro to Peron then shape your peoples destiny. You must balance your democratic status keeping pleased the Americans or soviets, manage your economy be it tourism, industry, offshore banking or cigars , keep an eye on your peoples happiness and stop revolutions and guerrilla insurgences in order to keep your regime in power.

Managing several hundred tropical island natives is not easy but loads of fun. Rule militarily or rule peacefully. Be a conservative dictator, or be a liberal dictator and win either way. Be corrupt or choose not to. The islanders will revolt and send you packing in a row boat if you fail them. Great simulation if you like Sim City type sims. Beautiful graphics. Detailed play lets you track all aspects of life on your island. Allot of fun. Tropico 3: Gold Edition [Mac Download ]
