Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey textbooks break down the complex into a very user friendly format. This newest book is no different. It is closely aligned with Scarborough’s Reading Rope and addresses each component, in addition to making several recommendations based on more current research. I appreciate that this book starts off by addressing constrained and unconstrained skills and addresses the 7 most effective comprehension strategies right off the bat. There are guided questions through each chapter, providing teachers with an opportunity to reflect on their practices, as well as opportunities for pre service teachers to reflect upon future practice. This is a solid resource for teachers looking to shift away from balanced literacy and provide instruction based on the science of reading research. It would also make an excellent textbook for pre service teachers.
