Q: Do the "load" leads connect directly to the battery, or must car battery cables be disconnected and routed in series through this device ?

NO the load connects to your LOAD...radio, fan, spotlight...whatever you are supplying with the battery. Car battery cables like starting & charging etc are way too large for something like this (hundreds of amps). It sounds like you are rather newbie...do not play with batteries & high power unless you know what you are doing

Q: how do I change the display to english?

Mine came up in English and did even know there other languages. But I do know that to reset the cumulative watt-hour reading you hold the only button down for some time. I suspect that if there is a way to change the language it involves holding this button down for awhile, then some further sequence. I guess I'm just offering encouragement rather than an answer that there probably is a way to change it. But you may have to decode it like Indiana Jones

how do I change the display to english?

Can this be used as a simple voltmeter/ammeter by connecting the meter power and load power wires to the same source, with a separate ground for load?
