World War I: The Definitive Visual Guide

Important
I bought the book because I felt that I know very little about the first world war. It is very informative and in a very easy style. A good book to get a basic understanding of some of the main issues and events.

Well beyond a simple introductory book.
Beautifully presented book on good quality paper. A good amount of detailed information with good visual representation to enhance the text and help understanding of many of the key aspects & battles of the great war. The photographs and battle maps are full colour, very detailed and easy to follow. Obviously this is not a definitive text on the subject but has more than enough detail to satisfy most readers - I have many books on WW1 and this is one of the best - it also highlighted many facts that I did not previously know or fully understand their significance in how the war commenced, progressed and played out. Highly recommended in every aspect.

A touching remembrance of the war "to end all wars"
For past generations, like my own, this book perfectly evokes what wars mean: nobody wins. In graphic detail it shows the rudeness of that war "to end all wars" Because of this wonderful book, several generations to come will never forget the conflict. In addition, since this special edition commemorates the 100th anniversary of what is known as "The Great War", this book is a must.

Probably deserves the title ‘definitive’
Another DK masterpiece of design and presentation. Text unusually informative with facts and figures one would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. Caveats below. It is a source of wonder the amount of effort and skill required to produce such a book. Each two page spread (sometimes more) covers a new aspect, facet, battle etc. making each page-turning section a gratifying surprise and rewarding experience.Positives:Pictures/illustration you will find nowhere else. Some of the glass plate shots are simply astonishing in resolutionCovers topics ,information and unusual facts usually omitted/ignored by other booksText compact, easy to read and generally knowledgeableIt seems unlikely any single book will cover as many aspects of the war as thisBeautiful production and printNegatives:In the quest for original artwork, some classic and illustrative photos have been passed over. In the chapter on war-artists, probably the greatest exponent (Fortunino Matania) is not only excluded, but not even mentioned. Some of the numbers don’t stack (poor editing?). Example: Verdun; on page 156 it is stated that 650 000 French and German soldier were killed (casualties?)but on page 160 it is stated that the dead was 162 440 French and 143 000 German = 305 440 Total? Some statements are seriously dubious eg. Page 78 “Jellicoe ….. intensely conscious that Britain’s fleet was the only defence against a possible German invasion…” ’Invasion’ in this context is a word of pure propaganda at home in WWII comics.Despite a general air of impartiality, the text shows some of the usual ‘Germans can do nothing good’ and no stone is left unturned to show ‘Hun wickedness’ etc. Every woman and child hurt or killed, or every church etc damaged is the work of the brutish Teuton. In contrast, the ‘Allies’, whether they be Italian, British French or Russian etc can do no wrong ..... not a single word breathed about their excesses, nor can any combatants be purer than wind driven snow in their quest to ‘save civilization’.Conclusion:These last comments aside, DK has always been the modern benchmark in attractive, informative books. In a future age when books are no longer produced, this will be a premier example. For this reason alone, it should have a place in the library of any book lover and historian.
