Perfect Smart Switch for Renters – No Wiring Needed! Here’s Our Feedback After Two Months of Use.
The THIRDREALITY Zigbee Smart Switch has completely changed how we control the lighting in our rental apartment. We're on a quest to make our apartment as smart as possible while playing within the “rules” of renting and decided to start with these smart switches, after much research on other options that didn’t require wiring (our final decision was between this and Switchbot, but went with this due to aesthetics). We now have 5 of these installed, and it’s honestly one of the best smart home upgrades we’ve made without doing any electrical work. If you're renting or just don't want to mess with wiring, this switch is your answer. See the video for a walk through on how to install it (it’s pretty easy) and how to connect it with Alexa 😊 PROS: • No wiring required – Perfect for renters or anyone uncomfortable with electrical work. • Works with Alexa & Zigbee hubs – Seamless integration with Echo devices, SmartThings, Home Assistant, etc. • Aesthetic design – Sleek and more streamlined than alternatives like SwitchBot. • Voice control is a dream – “Alexa, turn off the living room lights” just works. • Removable – Easy to pop on and off when needed (our maintenance guy was impressed). • Reliable performance – 5 switches installed and only one minor issue with connectivity (see below), which was fixed by moving the hub. • Easy setup – Once you get the spacer + screw tension right, it works like a charm. CONS: • Initial install takes trial & error – Getting the spacer and screw plate just right may take a few tries. • One-time connectivity glitch – One switch disconnected once, possibly due to hub placement. Once we moved the hub to a more central location in our apartment, we’ve had no issues. • Voice command sensitivity – Alexa sometimes gets confused if the phrasing isn’t clear (not really a ThirdReality issue, more an issue with Alexa / how we programmed Alexa, but worth noting). If you’ve been wanting to upgrade your lighting to a smart setup without touching a single wire, this is your sign. The THIRDREALITY Zigbee Smart Switch is renter-friendly, easy to install, and works reliably once set up correctly. We’ve had a few minor hiccups, but nothing that outweighed the convenience and satisfaction of having smart lighting in every room. We highly recommend it—especially for renters or anyone seeking a non-invasive smart home upgrade!

Great toggle for renters with no other alternatives
This toggle isn't without its flaws, but given that there really isn't any other product like this on the market (at least none that I can find), I still think it deserves a 5-star review. The setup process is super simple and I used Home Assistant for managing the devices. When mounting the toggle, I recommend trying the different spacers as each switch might be slightly differently (you might also need a different size spacer for the top vs. the bottom). However, once you get the right fit, the toggle will stay on tight. There can be a slight delay when toggling, but nothing too crazy. Additionally, yes they are relatively loud but given that the sound lasts maybe 1-2 seconds I don't find it a big deal. As a renter, this was my only real option and I'm glad these worked out.

Constantly disconnect from Apple HomeKit.
I have now purchased 7 of these, along with their Matter hub. While set up is quite easy and they do initially connect to Apple HomeKit, be prepared for repeated "device is not responding" issues. This can often be noticed before you try to control them via HomeKit by the devices blinking blue. This means they have lost connection to the internet. Taking the batteries out and putting them back in will most often resolve this. However, sometimes you have to completely removed the device from the Third Reality app (which then removes it from HomeKit) and set it up all over again. I have never had the batteries go below 70% so this is not a power issues. Short version: they are flaky and not dependable. Long version: I live in a 900 sq. ft. home (very small) with high speed wifi coverage throughout. I have an Eero pro router with 2 other Eero access points (overkill for such a small space). Aside from these 7 Third Reality Zigbee Smart Switches, I have Phillips Hue Bulbs and Eufy cameras throughout the house and outside. These 7 switches were needed for lights that do not take regular bulbs (and could not use Phillips Hue). I am renting, otherwise I would use Lutron Casseta switches. In any case, everything in my HomeKit home works perfectly except for these Third Reality switches. They are not dependable. Save your money and look elsewhere. If you own your home, the Lutron Casseta switches are bit more expensive but they work flawlessly (I have had them in my entire other home for 4 years and never had a single issue with HomeKit or otherwise. To this day, they are operating flawlessly).

Read to save installation time
So this was my second purchase of a smart toggle shut off for my well pump. This one worked a bit better with a larger toggle switch then the other brand. Anyway, if you are looking for something to turn your well pump off, and integrate with your home smart hub, (I have SmartThings and it works great) this could be the switch for you, but there are a few limitations. First, this took some rigging to get to manipulate the larger toggle that a well pump has. I ended up taking off the face plate and screwing on of the adapter piece into the outlet screw that holds the outlet in place. There is no way to make this work if you don't do that. I also had to use some electrical tape to hold the bottom in place. So, it does not look good, but it's in my utility room. For the few times that it might get used in an emergency, I can live with it. Second, this is a zigbee signal. I have a lot of zigbee sensors in my home, including an extender, so the signal is not an issue for me in the basement. Depending on your set up, this could be an issue. This unit does integrate directly with Alexa and you don't need a smart home hub. I hope this helps someone since the valve shutoffs are so expensive, this is a good alternative if you have a well to shut off the water.

I wish I would have found these years ago if they were around.
At my last house, I spent hours wiring standard Zwave switches. It cost much more money; it was a nightmare, and when there was no neutral wire, the switches would not work. I had to replace junction boxes to fit the switches and spent hours when there were multiple wires going to one switch. Anyway, I just bought a 4200-square-foot 4-bedroom, 5-bath home. I started doing the same thing I did at the old house, but in the new house the first switch had no neutral wire so it would not work. I came on here looking for switches that would work with no neutral, and some of them were like over 40 bucks a piece. I then found these switches. I installed 7 of them tonight. They are Zigbee, so they worked instantly with my Hubitat hub. They came with AAA batteries. They took all of less than 3 minutes to install each, not including pairing with the hub, naming them, and adding them to my Hubitat Alexa app. They do make a slight mechanical sound, but they are fast and a fantastic solution. I have one more left and just ordered 8 more along with 4 more motion sensors. I highly recommend using these switches instead of trying to hardwire smart switches in. Had I had these at my old house, I could have just taken them with me. I now have to return the 8 hardwire zigbee switches I originally ordered. I highly recommend.

This one works.
I bought the other version, the BLE type, first. That one was difficult to pair and then it lost connection after a few weeks and never worked again. This one, however, paired almost immediately. This one uses Zigbee instead of Bluetooth Low Energy and has been much more reliable. I've been using it for two weeks and it just works perfectly every single time. The other version, when it was working, wouldn't always respond. I am not using the Thirdreality hub that's available. It's connected straight to my Echo Plus v2 and managed directly in my Alexa app. I highly recommend this one over the other version, especially if you don't have one of the new Echo Plus devices. It was also quite easy to install. You just unscrew the switch plate, slip the plastic mounts over the screws, and screw them back in. Perfect for my rented apartment where I can't change the switch out. The unit snaps onto the mounts easily, just make sure it's lined up carefully so you don't put to much stress on the mounts. They'll break like the plastic mount that kept CDs in the case. I find lining it up and snapping it on left to right works best. I bought the pack of extra mounts just in case. If it ever gets accidently knocked off, I'll be glad I have them.

Great product, horrible app support
So there are two different aspects to consider with this product-actual device functionality and how it functions through the app. The product itself is great. We rent but wanted some smart home automations. This was a great fix for my situation. Install was a breeze. You take out the screws on the switch cover plate and the holding posts for the Smart switch get screwed right into the plate and switch. Install the two included batteries and the mechanism snaps right on. The whole Iinstall took minutes and only requires a screw driver. They are noticeably heard when they activate, not loud but you definitely hear them. But so are my kids. Now for app support. This is a zigbee product and stated it requires a hub to work with Alexa (my current ecosystem). Hub was bought to go with the products. Despite the hub purchase, I could not get anything to work, or get recognized, in that ecosystem. None, zero, ziltch. And I know I have the correct equipment. One would think that this would be much easier for a seasoned smart home owner. Third Reality has two apps and they don't communicate. One app has some features for certain products and the other app is for others. Frustrating to say the least. Luckily for me I am in the process of converting to the Home Assistant platform-the saving grace for this product. HA was able to recognize the devices essily. But they weren't bought for that platform. So yes they work and function, but not in the manner they were bought for. I have no voice commands through Alexa, no app support and that was the point. Disappointed in the software is an understatement. Happy with the hardware and it's possibilities. Would I recommend this product? Yes but with a major caveat, I only know this to be compatible with Home Assistant with a Zigbee antenna. I do not think this is a good Alexa product however.

Excellent alternative to rewiring
These mechanical switch flippers are easy to install. Simply add the two catch rings to the existing screws holding your switch plate in place. They can be easily removed leaving the catch rings in place. The pairing was as easy as any other zigbee device. The device includes many sizes of adapters, just in case your switch may be a little larger, but mine fit without those adjustments. I was quoted $150 replace the existing switch with Smart ones, and that was just for labor. This economical and easy alternative was perfect for my needs, especially after I just sit down and realize I left the hallway light on.
