The Intimate Ellington: Ballads And Blues

I have listened to Ellington to the point of thinking there was not much left to do in interpreting his arrangements.Gordon knocks it out of the parks with arrangements that are new but hold on to the essence of what Ellington is all about, You can't swing and get any funkier than this.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD, as the great Wycliffe Gordon and other members of his band are all excellent, and the choice of tunes mixes familiar items with rarer numbers. The playing is world-class, and they're having a lot of fun during the performance. You'd feel that there is an air of relaxed good humor throughout the album.

This cd is awesome! I am a new Jazz listener and I am loving Swing. After listening to this cd...I went back and listened to Duke Ellingtion's performances of the songs just to see what inspired WG. Wow...I'm sure Mr. Ellingtion is smiling and swinging in heaven just as we are on earth to this music. What a tribute!!! I recommend this cd to anyone. I play it everyday!!!
