My 1999 Kenwood served me well for years but has no HDMI switching, Atmos or DTS-X support. The subwoofer(LFE) output died on me so it was finally time to let it go. This Pioneer has everything you ACTUALLY need in a home theater receiver for a small-med sized room at a good price. I added 2 more small speakers to the setup I already had for height effects, now it's 5.1.2 and the surround effects are waaaaay better than the old Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 on the old receiver. Paying $400 more for a "network" receiver made no sense to me. Software updates end after a couple of years, internet speeds change and who knows if the apps themselves will eventually disappear. I added a $50 4K streamer with Atmos support instead and hooked it up to the HDMI input. Now every 3-5 years a $35-$100 investment for a faster and more updated streamer keeps this receiver relevant without dumping the whole thing. Sounds great, setup was easy and the streamer remote switches inputs, changes volume and shuts off power. What else do you need on a regular basis? BTW, the built-in Bluetooth is receive only, so if you want to use BT headphones and your TV doesn't support it, buy a BT transmitter and hook it up to the zone B preamp and switch speaker output to B if you want to hear at night without disturbing others.

This receiver is a fantastic upgrade for someone looking to modernize their home theater setup. After 11 years, I replaced my old receiver with the VSX-835 and the difference is night and day. Pros: * Packed with the latest audio formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced) * Streamlined design - no unnecessary features I never used such as internet radio from the receiver. I just use my streaming box for that. * Works flawlessly with my Xbox for 4K 120Hz gaming * Future-proof with 8K TV support * Clear display showing sound format and speaker configuration * Easy to use remote with helpful sound adjustment shortcuts * Music playback is exceptional Cons: * Firmware update process could be smoother. I had to copy just the update file to a FAT32 formatted USB stick and plug it into a back USB port. The instructions say to copy all the files and folders, but the receiver gave me an error during the update process when I did that, so I had the idea to copy just the update file with no folder to the USB stick, and that worked perfectly. If you're looking for a powerful receiver with the latest technologies and don't need extras like WiFi streaming, this is a great choice!

Overall, I'm happy with this receiver; it's a worthy upgrade to my previous Pioneer VSX-1019AH-k. The sound is great. As for the picture, I don't currently have a 4K TV so I can't speak to that aspect, but the HDMI switching with my 1080p plasma works flawlessly. If I have one bone to pick, it's having to manually set Midnight Mode every time I turn on the receiver. I live in a townhouse so Midnight Mode is key to keeping my neighbors happy. On my previous Pioneer receiver, I could set Midnight Mode and it would stay permanently set. It would be nice if you could set this permanently in the main menu. Or at the very least, make it one-button settable. I also miss the ALC mode of the previous receiver, which helped to further reduce dynamic range for keeping neighbors happy, but Midnight Mode on this receiver does a decent job when it's set. If I ever get a single family home where I don't have to worry about loudness, I can tell that this receiver will more than meet my needs.
