Perfect to play with my 5 yr old
Really loving the simplicity of this set. My 5 yr old loves "playing" pokémon, but until now, this has just been playing a single card and seeing who has the most damage. I wanted to step it up to a version that introduces more strategy and resembles real game play, but at a level he could understand. This set is perfect. Plus it's been great for me since I never played Pokémon cards as a kid so I'm also able to play with him. Each round lasts about 10-20 min which is great for his attention span. The cards have less text making it easier for him as he's developing his reading skills (see included pics comparing cards from this set with standard cards) It's not designed to incorporate any of his other Pokémon cards from his collection, but I think that's a good thing bc he has so many powerful ones (EX, GX, Vmax, etc...) that it wouldn't be balanced with this simple game play style. (FYI, I like that the back of the cards have different art from standard cards so they can't get mixed up with his other cards). I think this is a perfect game for young kids who love pokémon, but also for adults like me who aren't looking to dive into the complexity of a true pokémon card game, yet still want to play a fun strategy battle game.

Great for young kids.
Great first deck for my 5 year old. He really likes having the main characters from the show as cards even though he's not exactly ready to play cards in the format suggested in the box, he still loves them.

Great intro for 6yo
This was a perfect intro to Pokémon decks for my 6yo. It simplifies it by allowing the played energy to be used for any Pokémon played VS in more advanced play decks, you attach energy to specific Pokémon on your board. The only critique I have is that it would be nice of it came with something to keep the HP "coins". They slip out of the mini box that holds the 2 starter decks.

Perfect for My 5yo (and Me)
My 5yo son started getting into Pokémon cards because some other kids at church like to trade them. I bought him a few packs but then decided I needed to learn more about the cards (and the game) so he wouldn’t trade away some super cool or valuable card. Since the last time I knew anything about Pokémon, it was that there were only 150 of the creatures, I decided to buy this My First Battle kit so we could both learn how the card game worked. It was easy for my 5yo to grasp and now he sets it up on his own before asking me to come and play. The decks are condensed to only 17 cards so a bonus is that the games are very short; it keeps their attention and you aren’t overly committed to a long game.

Let your kid be fire and you'll be fine
My 4-year-old has LOVED learning how to play this. He's already picked up on basic strategy and knows how to set everything up! My one complaint (which accounts for losing a star) is that the decks are horribly unbalanced. Water cannot beat fire without a truly insane amount of luck. It's a little sad because my son never wants to be water now, so he misses out on learning different abilities—and I can't really blame him! 😂 But if you're just looking to teach your kid the basics, this set is amazing.

Great for the little ones.
My 4 year old and I really enjoy this introduction to Pokémon (and trading card games in general). I’ve 3d printed a custom box to hold both sets (all 4 my first battle decks) as well as a card holder that helps him hold his whole hand. It’s a great teaching tool and big fun.

This was really great. An easy way to teach my five and three year old pokemon cards. Please note the card backs are not the generic background, so you can't upgrade the decks at all.

I only realized that I ordered the Charmander Squirtle and received the Pikachu Bulbasaur one. Problem? Anyway, product’s good. My 4-year old took a number of games to understand the game flow, but has since gotten into the groove of it and plays very autonomously. His favorite game now. Asks for it every day and we have a blast. I did toss out the punchboard tokens for shiny chessex beads because I’m old school like that. Tried the actual tcg dice, but beads makes counting easier, plus shiny.
