Best range exhaust fan I’ve found.
I have a downdraft range exhaust system (see photos) next to my kitchen range which does a decent job removing cooking orders and grease but definitely has its limitations. This is especially true when using a splatter guard. The guard prevents the downdraft exhaust system effectively catching smoke, grease and odors, but with the Range Hood’s base extension the splatter guard is no longer is an impediment to odors, grease and smoke being removed. I have used the AirHood Wired Range Hood twice this past week and am very pleased with its performance. A good purchase; the AirHood is now a permanent part of my kitchen arsenal. Update: Still giving the AirHood Wired Range Hood 5 stars. I went back and looked at the most negative reviews, and some valid observations. The Range Hood is noisy as I expected it would be, especially given the substantial carbon and steel mesh filters. Even used along with my downdraft exhaust fan, odors escape (open floor plan in my home). Noise level too high to carry on a conversation with someone else in the kitchen, but then I am a solo cook - no one else allowed in the kitchen when I am cooking.

IT MOSTLY WORKS! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
As an apartment dweller with a range hood that doesn't vent to the outside, there are certain types of cooking that I avoid because of all the smoke that results. Then I read a solid review for the AirHood on Serious Eats, a website for avid cooks like myself, and I decided to give it a try... but I wasn't fully convinced it would really work. So my test was simple: unbox it, plug it in, then see how it does when I sear a rib-eye steak in a blazing hot cast iron pan. Normally, that would produce a guaranteed fog of smoke that sets off the smoke alarms and lingers in the apartment for days. If the AirHood didn't work, it was going right back to Amazon. But to my surprise, it really worked! There was virtually no smoke in my apartment after searing. A few things you should know: As others have noted, it's really loud, surprisingly so for its size. Perhaps no louder than my range hood fan on high, but that's really loud, too. It did not remove odor nearly as well as it did smoke -- I could definitely smell that I had seared a steak in the apartment, which isn't a bad thing, but if odor removal is a high priority for you, this may not be your device. If you plan to use this with a gas stove, be aware that the manufacturer recommends the wired version only. I primarily use gas, but I have an outlet near my stove, so plug-in wasn't a problem. I am thrilled that the AirHood will finally allow me to do certain kinds of frying and searing that I've avoided for years because of the smoke problem. I thought seriously about giving this five stars, but deducted on star for not removing odors as effectively as I believed it would. Nevertheless, if the smoke issue I have wtih the range hood fan sounds all too familiar to you, I highly recommend the AirHood. Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope you find it helpful in making a buying decision.

More trouble than it's worth, it's going back.
Although description indicated, "filter is designed to be easy to access and clean", that comment does NOT apply to me, my houseguest, and my neighbor. Beware if you have challenges opening jars. The positive reviews online and in magazines did not apply to us. The design is flawed in at least two ways: 1.) Not an ergonomic lid--the front filter lid was DIFFICULT TO UNLOCK AND IMPOSSIBLE TO LOCK. It was like unscrewing a tightly fitted jar. I didn't have a jar opener wide enough for it, but after a lot of effort, we finally succeeded to unlock/open it using a kitchen towel to grip it. Then after inserting a filter, we could NOT lock the lid back into place. We tried different ways, such as switching and flipping over filters, trying another filter, even one person using a kitchen mallet to lightly tap the ring and filter down, with another person trying to apply downward pressure while attempting to align, and screw down/lock the lid. We switched places, same issues. We were never successful over the course of 3 days. We cannot use the product due to the lid/filter issues. I don't even want to bother with replacing it to give another try all by myself. 2) There is another design flaw that consumers pay extra for the cure: Instead of improving the height of the hood to enable better capture of smoke and odor, the manufacturer is having consumers pay an extra $19.99, plus tax in some areas, for a height booster to accomplish it. Even if the hood itself was a keeper, I would have returned the height booster and used one of my fat anti-tip mugs, or something taller from my kitchen cupboard, turned upside down, plus earthquake goop to stay connected to make it taller, and save the $19.99. This product appears to work for other reviewers. For me, it's rated a single star just to try it, since zero stars is not an option.

Works awesome for sensitive smoke detectors.
The smoke detectors in our new home were very sensitive and we’re constantly going off. It would drive me and our pets crazy! I was a little skeptical when I bought this, but thought I would give it a try. I’m so glad I did. It worked absolutely wonderful. The smoke detectors haven’t gone off since I started using it. Not only does it work great the design is attractive enough to leave it on the counter when not in use. The only downfall is the fan motor is a little loud, but it needs to be to do the job that it does. I highly recommend this product.

Jury's still out on this...
I'm on the fence on this right now. We have a 95 year-old beach bungalow that doesn't have a place for a stove fan (it's on an inside wall with a cabinet right above the stove) and I have to clean like a madwoman to keep on top of the grease film (we also have open shelves)...so was very interested in this product. Got online and looked at some YouTube reviews/videos and decided: 1. it's not a terrible noise - we have a high end exhaust fan at our main house that sounds pretty loud too so I'm thinking it's the nature of the beast. 2. It's easy to stow 3. The cord storage is a pain - i coil it up and then put a Velcro cord holder on it - stuffing it back into a little indent in the back is not gonna happen... 4. I know it's designed by folks that are too-cool-for-school, but I have to believe that if it were rectangular instead of circular it would function better for two burner cooking - who really cooks with just one burner going except if you live in a dorm? 5. The handle should be removable. All that said, it is better then nothing. It does suck up steam from a boiling pot really well on even the lowest setting...but I'm still considering how well it will help control grease in the air. I'll get back to you after a couple of months.

Great Product that works perfectly.
I have a smaller kitchen where I am unable to put a fan or vent over the stove. When cooking, especially frying, many times I have set off the smoke detectors no matter how many windows I have open. I had read about this fan unit and finally decided to spend the money, knowing if It didn't work I could return it. Well I am so glad to tell you this works far better then I expected. Easy to set up, easy to store next to the stove and works beautifully! I can deep fry anything and there is no smoke at all! I don't even have to open the windows or kitchen door. Well worth the purchase.

Love the design but wish it’s not so loud
I really like the look and the way the front and back covers are magnetically attached. It’s very easy to open it to change the filter and clean it. I also like the way the power cord can be tucked away into its own base. It looks good on the countertop. I use it additionally to our over the range microwave vent. By itself it’s not very powerful but it’s enough for me. However, my one complaint is that it’s really loud. Sometimes I get a noise warning from my Apple Watch because it’s too loud.
