Q: How come speeds on this only go "up to 2800mb/s" when read speeds on a single nvme drive can hit 3500mb/s?

Hello! The OWC Express 4M2 has a limit on the speeds achieved by each drive inside due to each slot in the device only being connected to a single lane of Thunderbolt 3's PCIe 4 lane architecture. This limitation maxes each drives individual performance at around 700 mb/s. When used as an striped array RAID 0, this achieves consistent speeds around 2800mb/s.

Q: If using only of of the four available pcie lanes, will i be able to get 2800mb/s speed in the case i'm using a capable nvme ssd?

Hello! Unfortunately each slot is only going to be capable of about 700MB/s. This is due to being a 1-lane PCIe connection. You would need to utilize four drives in a RAID configuration in order to get the 2800MB/s speeds.

Q: Given there is a “cap” on speed is there any advantage to using Samsung 970 Pro drives over standard 970s?

Hello! You would not see a significant speed advantage with the Pro drives over the standard - if any at all. I'm never against using good quality drives, but you won't get better performance than the limit of what a single PCie lane is able to produce per drive installed in the enclosure.

Q: Can it be used as a boot drive to boot macos or windows 10?

Not on MacOS. Since MacOS 10.14 apple eliminated booting off software raided disk arrays.

Good stability

As mentioned in the reviews , comments and descriptions each slot can support a maximum of 750 mb/s. (average 500 mb/s) . So in order to reach 3000 mb/s you need to setup Raid. As opposed to other users' comments it is not loud. Maybe they changed the fans. The Daisy chain works very well. I connected a Thunderbolt docking station without any performance drop.I wish there was an ethernet and HDMI port.I wish I could switch the fan on and offOverall quality is very good and performance is very stable.
