In the real world you can't have everything. In this case, the SOL XL Emergency Space Blanket is a good compromise among a number of design goals: Lightweight, Pocket-Sized Compact, Man-Size Large, Durable, Warm, Inexpensive. No, this Polyethylene metallized sheet isn't all of the above, but a compromise that makes it adequate for emergency use. Not lightweight, but not heavy at about 7 ounces. Not quite pocket sized, but will fit in a waist pack. Not so large, but at about 5ft x 8ft, it's big enough to wrap around most men and women one way or the other. Durable? Well, better than the "standard" model since it's thicker, better than mylar (less tear resistant), and easier to "wrangle" too, since it's thicker. Warm? Well, heat reflective metallization does reflect your body heat and can be a barrier to rain and wind, but provides no true insulation from the ground or from cold rain water, and the film doesn't "breathe", so it will be clammy to skin and condensation will form from your body moisture and breathing. Inexpensive? Well, let's say predictable in price compared to the "standard" model's size and thickness; a better value (a better compromise in the design goals) than the "standard" and any almost-waste-of-money mylar emergency blankets. Yes, I'd say a good compromise for emergency use (which is my intended purpose on a predicted fair weather day hike, where it fits easily in a waist pack or sling bag). My idea is to sit on a log or bench or on a small (1ft x 2ft) piece of cheap plastic tarp with this thrown over me, maybe weighting down the ends with hand sized smooth rocks sitting on the corners to wait out a heavy rain (no grommets or loops, though you could affix duct tape loops on the corners and use "shepherd's hook" stakes . Of course this would work to help keep warm (via reflecting body heat) in a roadside emergency situation just wrapped around you, too, and not be so flimsy and billow about. Might also work in a stadium, but might blow around and annoy others. All in all, a good compromise for an emergency blanket.

This is not your typical space blanket. It may be a bit heavy for some ultralighters, but for weekend warriors who over pack the luxeries and the "just-in-cases" like me, it's just great. Lighter than the survival tarps (which are also great products), this is a little extra protection and peace of mind out on the trail. It makes a great emergency blanket for the car as well - large enough to keep a couple stuck drivers warm until help arrives. A good product and worth the price!

Nice emergency item. Much more durable than the average emergency blanket. The one thing that would've made this 5 stars would be grommets in the corners. I know that comes on the next model up but it would help here too. This is a great item to throw in your car or BOB because it really does have a ton of uses. It's durable enough to hang as a shelter, lay on the ground as a foot print or obviously wrap yourself up in it. For the $13 it costs there's no reason not to get one. I've used one as part of a lean-to shelter on a "roughing it" camping trip over the summer when heavy rain came on unexpectedly. It really worked great and I was able to fold it up in the morning and put it back in the bag. What more can you ask for for under $20.

I bought this emergency blanket to keep in my car during winter travel (plus have as a backup for camping), after watching a few YouTube reviews and reading other Amazon feedback. Fortunately, I haven’t had to use it in a real emergency yet, but it definitely gives me peace of mind. Compared to the typical flimsy mylar blankets I’ve had before, this one feels significantly more robust. It doesn’t come across as cheap or prone to tearing, and the material seems well-made enough to handle rough conditions for a single use as a tarp or tenting in an emergency. I really like the fact that it’s both windproof and waterproof, offering a reliable layer of protection if you do find yourself in a pinch. All in all, it’s a solid addition to any emergency kit—hopefully I never need it, but I’m confident it’ll hold up if the situation arises!

I opted for this SOL heavy duty XL mylar emergency blanket over traditional mylar emergency blankets for adding a lightweight tarp/shelter option into a three-day survival kit build-out for an upcoming training. This emergency blanket will work great for my intended purpose, which will NOT include long-term/overnight wrapping of my body. If you're unfamiliar with/have never used mylar, while it will help reflect heat, it also DOES NOT BREATH!!! Longer-term wrapping of your body will only produce condensation, which leads to moisture, which leads to wet, which leads to convection and loss of body heat, which leads to miserably unfortunate circumstances! This emergency blanket will be used as a tarp/shelter system. The size of this blanket is approximately 8ft x 5ft and will provide enough coverage and protection for an emergency shelter. This blanket is much thicker and more durable than a traditional mylar emergency blanket. I reinforced the corners with some Gorilla tape and paracord pull-outs for staking or for working with a ridge line, and the total weight is just shy of 8 ounces--perfect, larger coverage, more compactible, lighter, and no less durable than a reflective 5x7 survival blanket with grommeted corners, which by the way still requires duct tape reinforcement of all grommets and seams to avoid tear-outs. At the end of the day, this is still just a reflective, mylar emergency blanket. It will be durable enough for training exercises, but as with any emergency/survival blanket, will need replacement after a handful of uses and training scenarios. Like all emergency/survival blankets, they're mostly built to be used for one-and-done purposes. Note: This is not designed to be a piece of durable, permanent gear, but rather a lightweight reflective emergency survival item to assist with reflecting heat and temporary survival situations. If you're looking for long-term durability as part of a more permanent tarp/shelter set-up, such extends beyond the scope and purpose of this item! As far as mylar emergency blankets are concerned, this SOL Heavy Duty XL is a solid offering. It's much more expensive than those traditional mylar emergency blankets, but much more durable and larger with improved coverage area.

I have used this as a ground sheet for my tarp. I don't do the best at clearing the site. Lots of twigs and acorn shells under it. It has seen over 30 nights of use in 4 seasons and has yet to get a hole in it.

Way better than a crunchy aluminized mylar sheet. Only reflective on one side so it can be used for stealth camping. I used 1" Gorilla tape loops on corners, middles and centers so I can put a pole, stakes or a line through for shelter building. Packs small and light and lives happily in my pack. I have camped under it several times and couldn't be happier.

Item weighs 3.2 oz on the box but feels a tad heavier. More like 5.6oz I've researched and feels more accurate. The youtube channel and survival specialist Nate the “Canadian Prepper”. And others and I highly recommend this product as it is great for bug-out bag supplies. When fitting in a b.o.b be aware it takes up a good size area and is a lot tougher than another slim and flimsy easily pierced mylar blanket. Also, the orange ones are great for emergency signaling in a flood or while hiking In an s&r situation. Highly recommend!!!
