This brisk, action-packed Western stars Garner and Weaver as outlaw buddies who break into a maximum-security prison in order to steal a half-million dollars woth of gold. The robbery a success, greed soon turns them against one another, culminating in a spectacular, blazing showdown in a small Mexican village. Review: Great - Great Review: Great western - Although this is a spaghetti western and overall a good one starring James Garner, Dennis Weaver, Calude Adkins and Wayde Preston. The movie may not be the most famous, but I loved it from the start to the end, James Garner is awesome in this movie. It kind of keeps you in suspense from the beginning to the end when they try to get the gold and then escape. This is a must have for western fans or James Garner fans.

A Wonderful Western Story
I was pleasantly surprised with this film. I am a huge James Garner fan and Iโve been slowly expanding my collection of his work. In his book The Garner Files he rates and gives some comments on his filmography, and for this film he gave it 1/2 star out of 5. He even refers to the film as A Man Called Sludge! This may be the only time I disagree with Mr. Garner. I am a huge spaghetti western movie fan, and this is up there amongst the best Iโve seen. It certainly isnโt perfect, but it has that quirky charm that I enjoy. One of the only times where he played a heavy, I really enjoyed Jimโs performance in this film. Heโs bad, as in evil, but not so bad you want to hate him. The rest of the cast delivers adequately and the action doesnโt disappoint. The film has a lot of interesting stylized elements that is sure to delight western fans. I can see how this film among others influenced Quentin Tarantinoโs The Hateful Eight. Sludge it is not!

One of my favorite James Garner movies. Great action and story plot.

Gritty
This western is gritty and edgy just like all the seventies era low budget westerns. James Garner plays an outlaw, which is out of the norm for him but he does an admiral job of it. The downsides for me were the musical score at certain points in the film. It just didn't fit in for me and certain plot elements could have been better executed.

A Man Called BAD!!
It wasn't good. Not what I expected. Not that James Gardner could be proud of; or at least not one that I thought Gardner could be proud of.

Crappy movie but I was an extra in it so of course it's 5 stars! Shot in Spain 1969. WooHoo

This mishmash of a western was written and directed by Vic Morrow, an actor not especially known for his association with the genre, which may account for his borrowing scenes and ideas from numerous westerns from Hathaway to Leone. Garner is convincing as a bad-tempered, murderous outlaw although his fans may be disappointed to find no trace of his trademark scheming, trickster persona. The talents of Claude Akins and Dennis Weaver are wasted, their characters being mere plot ciphers. In fact, other than Sledge and a character known only as Old Man, there is no character development. Tony Young (TV's "Gunslinger") makes a brief appearance. There's plenty of action, but also long, dragging sequences when nothing happens. Editing and camera work is choppy โ there's a pointless overuse of extreme high and low angle shots which is irritating. If, like me, you love westerns, even indifferent ones, it's worth a watch: it's better than many Spaghetti Westerns.

"A Man Called Sledge" is a superb exciting western with James Garner absolutely convincing as an initially unsympathetic gold-hungry outlaw who gradually realises other things are worth more only when he has lost them. Ruthless in his pursual of apparently unstealable gold he becomes even more ruthless in his revenge against his unsavoury gang after they betray him. Sterling support from Western stalwarts Claude Akins and Dennis Weaver and from John Marley as the epitome of greed. Can't recommend it too highly.
