Though intended for sealing concrete gaps, this M-D Foam Backer Rod is an absolute game-changer for Doberman owners using DIY methods for ear posting. Perfect Density & Size: The 1/2 inch size and density are ideal for creating a stable, lightweight, and comfortable post core that is custom-cut to fit the ear canal perfectly. How to Use: The key to success is modification! It worked perfectly when wrapped in duct tape (or Zonas tape) to give it a firm, smooth exterior. This combination creates a far superior post than many specialized materials. Value: With 20 feet of material, this set offers incredible value, providing enough post material to last through the entire posting process for one or more puppies. If you are posting Doberman, Great Dane, or Boxer ears, forget the expensive custom kits—this backer rod, wrapped in tape, is the professional-level core you need. Highly, highly recommend!

closed in a screened deck and made a glassed in sunroom. Used backer rod to fill in the gaps between deck boards. I'm relatively sure the rod doesn't have a large R value, but it stopped the wind from blowing through the floor. It did make it possible to heat the room with a mini-split (which is not overloaded). It has kept the sunroom quite comfortable during winter (temps down to 8F). If it works as well in the summer heat, I'll give it high marks as an insulator.

I’ve been using very thin backer rod for posting my dog’s ears, and it’s been a fantastic solution! It’s lightweight, flexible, and provides just the right amount of support without causing any discomfort. It’s easy to cut to size and stays in place securely. Plus, it’s gentle on the ears and works perfectly with sports tape. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable ear-posting method!
