The nicest and best fan we’ve ever had!
This is such a great fan! It’s quiet, it blocks light (so my little barking dog can’t see out), and it works wonderfully whether on Direct (air coming in) or Exhaust. It integrates easily with Alexa, and I love that I can adjust it even when I’m not home. Installation was a breeze—it fits perfectly in our window without needing to use the included baffles to fill extra space to the sides of the fan. We have a house that’s 100+ years old and live in Wisconsin, where we used to only get a couple of 90 degree days every summer. Thanks to climate change, now it’s more like 2-3+ weeks. Because of its age and location, we don’t have central and rely on window units. We have a large unit in the dining room that can also be controlled by my phone, and on hot days I can make the AC colder and set this fan, which is in the adjacent living room, to exhaust before I leave my office at the end of the day. The fan is powerful enough to pull the cold air through the house while still being quiet enough to not interfere with watching TV or having conversations. I definitely want more of these, one for each room that has more than one window, so we can keep the air moving and cool the house without breaking the bank on our electrical bill. I recommend this to anyone that wants a sleek, quiet fan that can be voice controlled and fits into any window easily.

Good product. I don't get the negative reviews.
First off let me tell you this review is about the Vornado TRANSOM Window Fan, and no other fan. It's not the Alexa compliant fan. It's the regular transom fan. It puts out a lot of air (I called Vornado before I bought it; they say it's approximately 1300 cfm, which feels about right to me) and it's fairly quiet. I slept with it about 9 feet from my head last night. Our low was 58 degrees up here at 4000+ feet in the Southern Blue Ridge, and I was very comfortable. There's a nice remote that comes with it, and you can turn off "AUTO MODE" which is the thermostatically controlled mode, which I did. I just want it on, and if I'm cold I'll turn it down or off. It's not an air conditioner. We have an air conditioner, but I live out in the country and I want clean outside air coming in my house as much as possible. If it's nice and cool outside, I don't need to close up the house and run the air conditioner. It won't immediately lower the temperature in your house, since your house is big, holds a lot of heat, and you, your family, your pets, the stove, the electrical things you are running in your house, and the sun hitting the outside walls and roof generate a lot of heat. Air conditioners make it happen by blowing very cold air, across coils that are freezing temperatures or even lower. 60 degree outside air just doesn't quickly cool your house down. However, if that nice cool night air is blowing right in your bedroom, you will feel cool obviously. If it's 90 degrees out, I seriously doubt any fan is going to blow 90 degree air in your house and cool it off. At the highest setting, and 9 feet away, the air coming from the fan is about as forceful as you would want. It's not a weak fan as others have alleged. We have a small house, and the windows are small, but the fan fits nicely inside the screen. You close the window down on top of the fan, and it's stable. We had some rain last night, and no water came in the house while the fan was running. The modular foam that fits next to the fan does a good job of occluding the remaining space. I don't plan to leave the fan there in this downstairs window when I'm away. If I were to want to do that, I would probably make a better gap filler with plywood, etc, and find something to secure the window from being open from the outside. I think I can turn it off, remove it, stow it, and put it back in place when I'm home in a minute or so. So, it's a very nice fan. I have had other Vornado products, and still do. I trust the company and that's one of the reasons I bought it. Of course I can't say anything about longevity. The fan has been running 24 hrs non stop, on high, and I detect no noise or other problem with it. So, I don't know why others have posted negative reviews. Either they think they're getting an air conditioner, or maybe the reviews are bogus to begin with. This is a fan, not an air conditioner.

Pros, Cons, Important Tips & Fixes.
It works pretty well, and has its pros but also cons. Pros for this are as follows. ⭐- Pretty quiet It's not very noticeable on low to medium; high is just a hum, but not annoying. ⭐- Moves a decent amount of air The air is highly directional, though, basically jetting out directly in front of the device. (Please take a look at cons though, because there are cases where you won't get as much out of it unless things are done) ⭐- small profile and sleek look It blends in well and doesn't take much of your view from outside. The touchscreen controls are quite nice and responsive. No worries about a button failing on you over time as some other products. Cons are the following to consider, ⭐- Design might not be appropriate for your kind of window (also a fix for it) Because of the way it's meant to sit in the window frame, there may be a large opportunity for air to come inside. I had to use padded weather stripping on the top and bottom to give a tighter seal to stop cold drafts and such. The lip at the bottom is the main issue. (could've been solved if they produced this with foam pads at the top and bottom to create a better seal.) ⭐- Reduced speed in a closed room Depending on how sealed your room is, this product might move more or less air. It shines when there is a way for the air it's pushing in to escape, but suffers if there isn't. If possible, to get the best out of it, you can crack a window somewhere else, or just open a door if the room is sealed too well. (Really wish it came with a dual system so it can do both input and output at the same time, just down to design. Though it would cost more, and more complicated means more likely to have issues, but would have been great to have the option.) ⭐- Insects may get in (also a fix for it) If you are in an area with lots of little critters flying or crawling about, this product doesn't come with an insect mesh to stop them from walking through. Although if it's on, it seems to do an okay job of deterring most. I ended up getting some mosquito netting and weatherproof tape to cut and cover the outdoor air intake/output. After that, most I've seen is a nat once in a while. ⭐- Rain leakage (also a fix for it) Partially responsible due to the fitting in the window and the seal. The noteworthy areas are the sides of the product. I've noticed that when it rains, because of the design, the sides can let water leak into the interior as most of it drips down to the bottom lip of the device, where it ends up inside. High wind scenarios make it worse. ( Solved this by getting extra-thick weatherstripping and wrapping it around the top, bottom, and sides of the fan where the window meets it. making sure that the cut seam is on the middle top surface of the device. Plug the sides of the window and device tightly.) ⭐- Let in the draft When off, it will still let in outside air draft. Which could be good or bad. Bad if it's too humid out or cold, but it doesn't stop fresh air completely on the good side. (can probably get some kind of fabric velcro and cover the inside air slot or something, haven't thought of a fix that would not be janky)

Not a replacement for an AC unit
This is a great fan. Anyone giving it a bad review is expecting it to be an AC unit, which it isn't. Not as drafty as a typical window fan, the spacers double ast the packaging (which I love), it's quiet, sleek, and does it's job well

Does blow in either direction as advertised, but there's so much that could be improved.
As the title says, this works fine--well, even--blowing air in either direction. But there are a lot of "quality of life" concerns I have that I did not anticipate (and think others should be aware of) based on the listing information. 1) Installation kit is lacking - If your window does not exactly fit the dimensions of the fan or the fan + the provided foam blocks, you're high and dry. I fortunately had lots of leftover insulation foam and HVAC tape from installing portable ACs so I was able to cover or fill in gaps as needed. Having looked closely at my seal during installation, it seems like some unwanted gaps are nearly guaranteed by the "inverted U" shape on top of the unit (provided materials do nothing to address this). 2) Assuming you've gone the extra mile to get a proper seal around the unit, there are major energy efficiency concerns. ***There does not seem to be adequate blockage of airflow when the unit is powered off.*** Put differently, there is no "neutral" mode - and that's a problem. Standing in front of the unit when it's powered off, it feels as if the window is open. This essentially means that in order to not have undesired air (too cold, too warm, perhaps dirty if you're in a polluted or wildfire-prone part of the world), the unit must constantly be on in exhaust mode. This really undercuts some of the appeal of having Alexa capability - rarely would it ever make sense for me to turn the fan off from a temperature-control perspective. But obviously from an energy-efficiency perspective, there will be lots of scenarios in which a) the indoor temperature is adequate, and b) I do not need the fan to be running. Key point: Idle air coming through when the fan is not in use dramatically limits the percentage of the calendar year during which it would make sense for me to have it installed! This feature is the biggest issue when there is a large gap between indoor and outdoor air temperature. If I have to keep the fan in exhaust mode on the lowest setting at all times when I'm not trying to significantly move air, I will constantly be blowing out air that's already at my desired temperature. One of the main selling points of this fan is that it can move air better than just opening a window. But its main drawback is that having the fan off is not nearly as effective at stopping airflow as closing the window would be. I'm having to think way more about when to install and uninstall this than I would like. Simpler window fans absolutely have the same issue which leaves me wondering what is left about this one that makes it $50+ better than those. At least those are easier to set up and take down regularly if the window must be closed. 3) I did not realize that by getting the Alexa-enabled version I was giving up on also having a remote (which the cheaper version has). Lots of other Alexa-enabled devices can receive inputs manually (i.e., their built-in buttons), via a remote, and via Alexa. Unlike the cheaper version, this has no remote. I'll mainly be using my Alexa or the app, but this presents an issue for me since I'd like to have overnight guests be able to control it without fussing with Alexa or the app - some will just want an old fashioned remote. 4) Noise - quite loud and even a little rumbly sounding on the lowest exhaust setting. Setting aside my energy-wasting concerns mentioned above, it is just not pleasant to have the fan on at all times.

Is this a joke?
I needed something to pull in the 50-60° air outside at night to cool my tiny efficiency apartment, which gets into the 70s at night without AC. There's a window AC unit in the only window, but it won't blow cold air if the outdoor temps are below 60°, so I end up sweating all night even though it's chilly outside. I decided to buy this window fan. I've never used a window fan before, having just moved from a climate where every home has central HVAC, so this is a new experience for me. I have other products from Vornado that I like a lot, and I liked the low profile on this fan and the weatherproofness of it. I also liked that it seemed like it would let in less outdoor noise than the more standard types of window fans you see with the big slats between the grates. So I chose this model for my first window fan. That was a mistake. As I write this, it's after midnight, and the outdoor temp is 61°. Yet here I sit with this fan having been running for hours, and it's 70° in my room. The output on this thing is a JOKE. At the highest speed, it feels like a faint wisp for maybe about a foot from the machine, and then nothing. How on earth is this circulating air if it's barely blowing? I triple checked that it's set to pull in air from outside and not set to exhaust, and the it's on the highest setting. It's definitely set correctly. It's just expensive junk. I can't actually detect any difference between the settings in terms of how hard it blows, but the highest one is not even as strong as a battery powered desk fan. It doesn't even move paper if you hold paper up in front of it. All it's doing is pulling in the humidity from outside and that's it. My room is actually the same temp as just having nothing at all in the window. In fact, hotter, bc with nothing in the window I can get it down to 68° in here if it's cool enough outside. I've got four fans running in addition to this one just to try and get through the night while I wait for a fan to get here that actually works. Then I'm returning this piece of trash. The only thing it does that it advertises is that it's quiet. Probably bc it's not doing much of anything. Idk who is writing these other reviews saying how powerful it is and how much air it moves. Are mosquitoes writing these reviews? Actually I don't even think a mosquito would find this wind current to be strong. Ugh

Slim, Quiet, and Powerful — Ended Up Buying More
I originally ordered one of these window fans, and it worked exactly as expected. Compared to other window fans I’ve owned, this one is much slimmer and noticeably quieter, which immediately stood out. Performance-wise, it’s excellent. You can clearly feel the airflow throughout the room, and the four speed settings give you good control. I also like that the airflow can be set to intake or exhaust, and the temperature control is a great feature—it automatically turns the fan off once the room reaches the desired temperature. The included remote is another plus, making it easy to adjust settings from anywhere in the room. My only long-term concern is cleaning, since dust will eventually collect inside the fan, but that’s true for any fan and something I’ll deal with later. Overall, I really love the slim design and quiet operation. I liked it enough that I ended up buying two more for other rooms.

Fantastic Product That Works Fine Vertically
Just like other people probably wondering if you can use this fan vertically instead of horizontally, you absolutely can, as I've seen mixed responses from other people talking about this. If you mount it vertically, to get the best airflow, the grills need to point towards the window, not toward the wall for whatever side your windows are on. So the plug should be coming out the right side if you mount it toward the right side, and the left side if you mount it toward the left. If you do not mount it this way, with the way vornado designed this fan, you will get a significantly weaker airflow that will get absorbed by the wall and won't be able to get into your home. Secondly to address people saying this fan is weak. You're either point the fan in the wrong direction or you do not have airflow that is able to escape from your room. Air coming into your room needs a way to be able to come out of your room to be able to cool it down, so you need another spot/window opened up when using this, and you should be using this with some other fan to be able to get the air to circle around your room. This fan isn't going to cool off your room when it's really hot outside, but it's extremely effective anytime the weather is starting to get a litte warm inside of your house and you want to cool it down without using your AC. The cost of running these fans in comparison to an AC is a night and day differece. Coming off summer with an AC constantly being on generating 1KW every hour being on minimum to even breaking down at some point, this literally is costing pennies, and I have another exisitng window fan that I'm using in my main room as well. My KW went from 30KW a day peak during the summer to 8 consistently, with the main cost now being my refrigerator, and I do live in an all electric apartment. If you do get this though, you may want to purchase some third party vertical covers, as the ones that come with the product won't cover a standard size window. Unlike the other fan that I have now, this one gives way better privacy since the grills are not as exposed when it's bringing in air, which makes it great for my bedroom. If I ever need another one for my living room I'm likely going to buy this one again.
