Preachy

I am all about appropriate relationships and encouragement. I use so much of what's in this book already. Maybe, because of this, I took it personally when Jensen said I wasn't doing such and such and changing my mindset would change everything. I also found his use of Marzano to be outdated and his recommendation of data walls when there is so much research against this to be in opposition to the rest of what he said. I did steal a few ideas that I will implement tomorrow.

Don't Just Buy It

Don't just get it for your "some day" stack. Buy it. Study it. Implement it. This is truly a strong and ENCOURAGING case for passionate teaching in high poverty schools, but who are we kidding? A solidly effective strategy will reach any student. There are plenty of immediately do-able examples and ideas. There's research to support each claim. There's real talk and a genuine tone of support. I would recommend this to any teacher K-12.

The chapters are very short and it's very easy to read

Effective book for ANY kind of teacher. I'm a high school special education teacher, and I find this very helpful for students in poverty, but also with my students with special needs. I will be reading the next edition of the book, "Poor Students, Rich(er) Teaching". The chapters are very short and it's very easy to read. I read this book for an in-district course in our school district.

Great Resource

Packed full of great information. Starts with giving a back ground about students in poverty and provides the whats and whys for teaching, especially focusing on growth mindsets!

I'd read something else.

Meh. I would not have read this if not for a class requirement. It goes on and on about not labeling students but the title of the book literally contains the words, "poor students"... I tried to hide it on my desk so my students wouldn't see it and think to themselves, "What the hell? We're poor?!" Boooo.I recommend Empower by A.J. Juliani and John Spencer.
