The Last Family in England

The whimsical style of this book doesn't prepare you for its grotesque ending. I've read several books by Matt Haig - I enjoy his sense of humour which is admittedly dark at times - but generally he provides insights and some kind of resolution. This time we are left with nothing but ongoing misery and death: an inexcusable betrayal of a trusting reader.

I bought this thinking, what a lovely idea, a book written from the point of view of a Labrador.It was horrible! It starts off with the dog at the Vets about to be put down and you feel horrible, but you have to read on thinking that there is bound to be a reprieve for the dog...no such luck.I think this is a cynical horrible book, that degrades everything that is beautiful about that special bond between man and dog.

What an utterly depressing story! I wish I'd never ordered it and like another review, I am destroying this book so as to save inflicting the upset on anyone else. Matt Haig, I have really enjoyed other stories by you, but you really should have kept this one inside your head. The ending sent me into a spiral of depression. Cheers mate. :(

I persevered with this as I’d just read the midnight library and loved it so had faith it would come round but it doesn’t - depressing and soul destroyingNot one for dog lovers or lab owners

It started as a lovely story relayed from the perspective of the family's labrador but it soon became twisted and somewhat depressing...Having finished the book, I am not sure about it at all. One sentiment comes through loud and clear: you cannot control the bad choices of others.
