Works well with copper, brass, german silver
The good and the bad. Starting with the bad - this is extremely toxic and should only be used by people who have thoroughly read the MSDS concerning it - as it is an acid and can burn the skin and could cause vision loss if gotten in the eyes. It should only be used in a well ventilated area and proper acid resistent gloves, eye protection and a mask should be worn at all times when using it. Baking soda will neutralize the solution. Having said that, it works VERY well on copper, bronze/brass, and to a lesser degree on german silver (nickel alloy) in creating etched designs in metal. Any metal used should be clean and free of oil prior to painting the resist on the metal. I used a simple black paint - so as to more easily see the design drawn into it. I would suggest using a needle or scribe to cut through the resist when placing the design on the metal. Results will vary depending on humidity and temperature, but generally speaking only 4 hours is needed to get a clear and defined design etched in to the metal. I would suggest using a crockpot simply for ease of retrieving the metal from the solution. Do not stir or agitate to solution while the metal is in solution. The solution does has a tendency to try to undercut the paint/resist. I got my best results by simply placing the metal in the crock pot - design facing up and then walking away for 4 hours. I do desire a deeper etch. If you reduce the time in solution to a period less than four hours the etch will be lighter. Generally speaking what I am doing is reproducing sheet music on copper bracelets - which takes a full four hours. To neutralize the solution place the metal in a solution of water and baking soda and then wait for any foaming action to subside. Then clean the paint off with a toothbrush dipped in Everclear (190 proof). That works best and is completely non toxic and does not have the smell associated with denatured alcohol. One final point - keep the different metals separate when etching. Copper with copper only, bronze with bronze only, etc It woorks better that way. I have different containers for each metal I use. Once the designs are etched, you can use a patina - for example salt or ammonia or bird poop (really) - to make the designs show up better.
