Awesomeness
I already had one that I lent to a friend who lost it. So I bought two more. It's sturdier than most umbrellas considering I can hold on to it with a vice grip in extremely high winds and it gives no hint of folding upwards. You can even feel the strength of it when you open it (the force of it makes it tug away from you). Great quality inside and out. And it looks cool. I'd also like to mention the first one I had was thrown out of an 8 story window because I was too lazy to go back upstairs and it was pouring. Only thing that broke was half the guard (then i took the other half off) and the locking part got kind of wonky. And yet it was still completely usable (I kinda liked it better without the guard actually. considering breaking it off one of my new ones). Needless to say, this thing is pretty damn durable.

Let raindrops taste the steel of your blade...
We've been having our typical awful winter weather this past few weeks in San Francisco. Unfortunately, my old Walgreens mini umbrella fell victim to a gale force wind one day and subsequently thrusted me into the market for a new umbrella. Enter...the Samurai Umbrella. A coworker had just received one as a Christmas present, which is how I came to know this amazing piece of craftsmanship. This was the first time I have ever seen a product and thought "this is the best model of a device that will ever exist." In other words, you will be hard pressed to ever find an umbrella that is as well-built, clever, and has a knack for starting conversations as the Samurai Umbrella. Just last night as I was commuting back home on my back, I had the umbrella firmly strapped around my torso, and another biker came up behind me and remarked, "I bet drivers make sure to give you the right away when they see that sword on you." I just laughed and explained my sheathed weapon was actually just an umbrella. His face looked like his brain might have just exploded inside his cranium. It really is that amazing. Construction/quality...the big question on any product. You won't find an umbrella under $100 with better craftsmanship. This umbrella opens smooth like a deadly ninja assassin. It's very solid and feels precision-made. The long handle allows for a great grip during heavy winds and the grips actually functions to improve your grip on the device even more. It really is a great product. I've been an Amazon customer for many years now, but this is my first review. I felt compelled to let other people know how terrific this item is because I love it so much. This is the second product I own by Kikkerland, the first being a magnetic kitchen timer. The timer's another great product, so it's definitely a brand to keep your eye on for smart, well-made products.

Decent umbrella with a novelty handle
First, thank you Amazon and DHL for the quick delivery to Fiji. The umbrella itself is a relatively quality build sans the cap tips (but not a big deal as stitching is fairly good). Rain coverage suits 01 average person (or 01 average person and a small child). The katana like handle is nicely done with no overt faults (but then am no craftsman). Overall I am happy with this umbrella because it's a decent umbrella with some style. If one is looking for a self-defense umbrella, this is not it (as using it for heavy impact defense or offense can obviously result in foreseeable damage to the otherwise thoughtful product). The build is good enough for usual umbrella use and I will be using mine when it rains again (with some enigmatic style...hopefully....given my inherent comic inclination). I would recommend this umbrella to anyone who is a fan of martial arts (actual practitioners, movie buffs or both) and even to people who aren't into the arts because it is a decent umbrella. Vinaka vakalevu (thank you) from Fiji.

Generally Satisfied
UPDATE: I have removed a star. After a few months of use, the umbrella has held up very well. However, the carrying sheath is incredibly flimsy; the tip of the umbrella has punctured through the bottom of the sheath, making a giant hole. This causes the umbrella to slip down in the sheath, and as the hole gets bigger, I'm sure it will simply fall out. I have contacted Kikkerland about replacing the sheath, but they said that they could not. It's still a great product, but I'm very disappointed by the terrible quality of the sheath and the refusal of the manufacturer to help. This is a very high-quality product. Although I thought it was gimmicky at first, repeated use in windy and rainy environments demonstrated that it is actually a very sturdy umbrella. It works well as an umbrella. The opening mechanism is strong and smooth, and I was actually surprised by the amount of force with which the umbrella opens. It has a great, strong feel to it, like it would be very sturdy, and I've noticed that there are thick plastic bands reinforcing the umbrella struts, something that was lacking from my previous umbrellas. When I was using this in a bad storm, I saw everyone else's umbrellas flipping inside out, but this umbrella did not flip. In fact, in strong winds, it's almost pulled out of my hands by the wind! The sword handle is also pretty good, with some reservations. While it would have been cooler if the handle resembled a real sword, it is actually a piece of plastic that is molded into the shape of the sword handle. It feels like strong plastic, but I have noticed some sort of matte covering that rubs off, revealing shinier spots on the handle. It's not that noticeable, though; I only saw it upon close inspection. The long handle actually helps you get decent leverage in strong winds, and lets you get a good grip on the umbrella. Unfortunately, the connection between the handle and the umbrella shaft seems a little weak. After only a few days of using it, I noticed that the handle could sometimes rotate around the shaft, so that the opening button becomes misaligned. A hard twist when the umbrella is opened will make the handle turn against the shaft, which worries me a lot. The handle adds a lot of bulk to the umbrella, though, so it does get kind of cumbersome at times. Overall, it's really cool! I've drawn many strange looks and shocked questions when it looks like I have a sword on my back! It comes with a scabbard that slings around your back like a real sword, and it just looks super cool. Definitely recommended; join the ranks of the Umbrella Samurai!

Cheap Quality Doesn't Last
I really love the idea behind this umbrella, it's so elegant and cool. I like it so much that I bought one for myself, and then I bought one for my brother. Mine arrived in good shaped, worked well, LOVED IT. My brother's arrived, broken. The hilt guard was shattered, so I had him return it, and I ordered him another one. This one arrived ok, he LOVES IT. A couple days ago, the hilt guard on mine, cracked and half of it fell off. Now there's a sharp edge where you don't want sharp edges, and it looks crappy because it's broken. Exactly the way my brother's was broken. The difference is that it took over a month for mine to break, but broke is broke. I hope his second one last longer than mine did. I would love to recommend this item, but I can't. It's a cheaply made novelty item that's not going to last, and that's a shame. How much would it have costed to have a plain metal disk for a guard? They went with the cheapest possible plastic and it ruins a great idea.

A distinctive and practical piece
I've had this umbrella for a month now and have really enjoyed it. While I would not attempt to take it through airport security due to its weapon-like appearance, I do carry it everyday. It definitely garners its share of looks. The handle feels very comfortable in hand and the length of the handle means both hands can easily be used to wield the umbrella when encountering strong winds or water-gun wielding ninjas. The material and mechanism of the umbrella are good quality and it opens smoothly with a single click of a button. The nylon "sheath" is also very practical due to the extra-long, adjustable strap. It allows one to wear it across the back or over the shoulder -- a hands-freeing feature that very few other umbrellas have. The sheath is also where my only complaint comes from. The umbrella is significantly heavier on the handle end which pulls the handle end down. Unless worn across the back or balanced by a hand, the handle end will want to dip down and the umbrella can accidentally slide out. While mildly bothersome, I find it an acceptable trade-off for the easy draw action the sheaf affords. PROS: ++Unique, distinctive appearance ++Good quality ++Extra long handle ++Easy draw, adjustable "sheath"/cover CONS: --Handle end wants to slide down in certain cases when worn in sheath and not steadied I would highly recommend this for those who would enjoy a unique take on a ubiquitous item.

awesome umbrella
I bought this for my fiance a few months ago. He loves Samarai swords and the martial arts, so when I went shopping for an umbrella, this was perfect. It is actually quite sturdy. We live in Houston, TX where we experience a ton of rain as is, and then hurricane rain, which includes strong winds. This umbrella has not folded inside out with the hard winds and is big enough to keep 1 person comfortably dry. Aside from being mechanically sound, the product looks really cool! He gets compliments all the time and he himself likes to play with it as a sword (guys.... what ya gonna do). I love that this entertaining umbrella can bring so many smiles. :)

Samurai Umbrella Sword
Awesome product. It's not as cheap as you would think it is for that price. Looks like it went up on price since the time I bought it which was a month ago. Got it for 21.99 shipping included. The handle feels good and the umbrella materiel is decent and it works just fine. The auto release is nice. It comes with a nylon case with a strap. That is probably the cheapest thing about this product, but none the less it holds the umbrella nicely and looks like a real ninja sword when inside of it. The shipping came on the earliest day predicted and the packaging was good, kept it well protected. I am happy with my purchase.
