Value finder for painting, not a proper gray scale for scanning
The package says "Gray Scale & Value Finder". This common tool is a VALUE FINDER for painting or other art projects or situations where you have to determine the gray values of colors or shading. In other words, a visual helper. These are usually numbered one to ten, as this one is, and are printed as halftones. (You can see a halftone screen in the gray sections under a paragon loupe.) Perfect for painters and illustrators, good price, sturdy enough for its purpose, and even has a protective sleeve. Very happy customer here. However, someone mentioned that it should be eleven divisions, and that refers to a GRAY SCALE for scanning. Proper gray scales are continuous tone (CT) like on a developed photograph, and are divided into 11 steps for 10%, 20%, 30% grays, etc., up to 100% for black, PLUS white. There are also 21 step versions that include 5% increments plus one for white. Gray scales are scanned with artwork to help with tonal and color corrections. Printed gray scales (halftone) are available, often as book companions, but are not appropriate for digital image correction, and should only be used in a pinch and only with the proper eyedropper adjustments. I hope this clears up any confusion for prospective buyers.

Great tool for students or professionals
I have my students make their own gray scales, but they are rarely perfectly accurate. This is a fabulous item to have and it’s very reasonably priced.

Product great. Packaging not great
I look forward to using this to improve my drawing! Sadly, the simple cardboard swatch in a plastic sleeve was shipped in a paper envelope - and arrive creased as if it’s been folded several times. It just doesn’t feel new.

Accurate grey scale. Useful for any creative application.
My grey scale came in perfect condition. It’s replaced my old one which went missing. A grey is an important tool in creative work and accuracy is important. The grey is neither too cold or too warm. This size is easy to store or carry with you. The cut outs let you place what you are look at in the middle of the grey standard and not just next to it so you’re doing less guessing. Who needs this? Artists, interior decorators, architects, fashion designers and merchandisers, dyers, knitters, crocheters, home sewists, stylists. It’s espcially good for creatives to explain color palettes to non-artists like clients or merchandisers. Also, great for at home creatives for whom color coordinating is is not their strong point. If you use a color wheel to help with color choices then you need this to help with values. Getting paint chips or any other diy defeats the purpose of this little tool because breaking down black to white in precise 20% increments by eye is nearly impossible. Your own eye will never be this accurate. You would need to take this tool to the paint shop to recreate it! One tip on how I use grey scales is to mentally imagine what you are working with as being in black and white. You could use a photography app to help but keep in mind they often skew the image and lighting can also change the values. Still it would be very helpful.
