XR or not XR? In case you were wondering.
Before I ordered this pack I had the question: Is a DeWalt battery that says "XR" different from a DeWalt battery that does not say "XR"? After all, "XR" is supposed to mean "X"tended "R"untime, right? The listing photos show no XR (on 4ah packs—2ah packs have never said XR), and many of the reviewer photos show batteries that do say XR. So I went searching, and I couldn't really find a good answer. Lots of people will tell you how XR tools are brushless while "20 Max" non-XR tools have brushes, but that's a difference in the tools, not the batteries. Similarly you can find people who will tell you all about the batteries, runtimes, voltage drop under load, etc, except they generally don't answer my question about XR batteries being different. So I have here two batteries: • DCB204 from 2023 that says XR, assembled in USA, cells made in Malaysia. • DCB204 from 2024 that DOES NOT say XR, assembled in Mexico, cells made in Korea (just received yesterday in December 2025, so they've been floating around the supply chain for at least a year). And I took them both apart. Both batteries have exactly the same electronics, which YouTubers refer to as "gen 2", with a larger circuit board that integrates flat metal conductors and the charge meter button and LEDs. Both batteries have exactly the same cells: Samsung INR18650-20R. So apart from manufacture dates and locations and the printed "XR", these are exactly the same battery. A DCB204 is a DCB204 (though the were versions of it with the Gen 1 electronics). I can now say with some confidence that XR printed on the battery means nothing at all. It's just marketing. XR actually just means "brushless". Any impact on runtime is incidental. Also it looks cool, almost like an emoji. XD. Marketing. Did I mention how much I detest marketing when it gets in the way of useful, meaningful information? The batteries themselves are excellent: sturdy construction, thick conductors, six spot welds on every cell connection. You get what you pay for.

Capacity is great. If you only have 4 or 5 volt, worth it.
Had this for 3 mos now works and charges great.

Dewalt tools rock.
When I received my 8.0- Ah Battery I charged it up the next day I used it on a job it drained down fester then I expected. I was going to return it. I thought about it and decided to charge it again. The next day i used it for a similar job and the battery worked fine. After the same amount of work the battery had half of its battery life left. Very happy with it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 The DEWALT 20V MAX battery is powerful, reliable, and long-lasting. I use it with my drill and impact driver, and it holds a charge really well even during heavy work. The recharge time is quick, and I like that it’s compatible with all my other DEWALT 20V tools. It feels solid and durable, exactly what you’d expect from DEWALT.

Misleading advertising
This is not an XR battery. It is a good battery but not as powerful as a true XR battery..

Good for endurance
It sure does last a good while on my weed eater. I have a very large yard that has a privacy fence around it, 800 feet. And that is just the out side. So you have to double it because there is the inside to do also. So a total of 1600 feet of weed eating on one charge, that is awsome. It was a little hard to get it to take charge the first time, hope it's better now that it's broken in.
