German Phrasebook (Lonely Planet) Paperback – February 1, 2012

this book is nice and handy, small enough to fit into a cargo pocket or back pocket on a pair of pants. it does have a nice feature of not only translating the words/phrases to another language, but it also puts the phonographic spelling to, so you can actually say the words and pronounce them correctly. It also has a section on grammar...that is nice because it helps you to understand past/present/future tenses of the words.Other than that, this book is pretty useless. It does not have too many key phrases that are needed during travel. Doesn't help for if someone rattles off an answer to your question in another language...because you will not know what they just said to you. This book has an entire section on months, numbers, days, etc, that you will not use while traveling. If you are going to be in the area for an extended period of time, those may be helpful, but the typical traveler will only be there for a few days to a week, and you will not need that. Honestly, you can look up all the key phrases you will need on google translate and make your own cheat sheet, or use a translator app on your phone and it will get you by just fine.this book does have some nice little culture tips, which is nice for certain countries, but you can look up that online as well and make your own little guide about eye contact and body language or hand shaking in other countries.

It's a very cute, very useful book. I haven't traveled extensively but I have been to Germany and the book is accurate as to what you would actually say. It's also not vulgar at all: this caused it to lose a star for me, but might be just want others want (I need to know how to curse so when people are cursing at me I know what they're saying, imho). However, the rest of the books content was spot on.

For being such a small book, I doubted what all I could get out of it. Turns out--a lot. I bought it second-hand on here and got a steal of a deal. There's so much information. It's divided into convenient categories like needing medical assistance or hanging out with friends. The phrases teach you a lot of words and things just become clearer about the language. I haven't had to use it for travel yet (its main purpose, I suppose), but its small size would work well for that. I am really happy I got this book.

I love these small Lonely Planet Phrasebooks. I have purchase 3 languages. They are small enough to easily carry around while traveling, and contain all of the necessary words and phrases you would need. It's thoughtfully organized. For example, there are sections for ticket buying phrases, medical emergency, dietary restrictions. There's also a section specifically for menu translations, which is VERY useful. In the back, there are BOTH English to German, and German to English dictionary sections. Once you buy one of these phrasebooks, you will become a huge fan and continue to buy them!

I get a Lonely Planet Phrasebook every time I travel outside of the country. These pocket books are the perfect size and have just the right amount of information for you to carry on your person. All of the most important phrases along with other useful information on travel, reservations, shopping, money, etc. are in there and you don't have to rifle though hundreds of pages to find what you're looking for. The pronunciation guides are also top notch. Lonely Plane makes communication while traveling a breeze!

I have a German wife and have been learning the language over the last couple of years. This book has really helped me memorize the correct responses to common questions, and has been an important cog in my learning success. If you're looking to become conversational in the language, I recommend this phrasebook, along with "German made Simple" and Teach Yourself's "Complete German" (which comes with two audio CDs). If you use all three of these books, you'll easily be on your way to speaking and understanding everyday German, all for under $75.Viel Glück!

Initially I thought this would be a normal sized book, but I love the fact that it's pocket size. It's great how they have divided their sections by food, socializing (there's even a specific part for romance), health, practical, and basics. It has been very useful. I'm learning German, so it has been a good reference, and learning material. On top of all the good content, it's beautifully designed, colorful, and easy to find stuff in it. Highly recommended if you're going or already in a German speaking country.

This phrasebook is small and light, but packed with a lot of useful information. There's even a (hilarious) chapter on hooking up! I studied German 20 years ago and have mostly forgotten it, and this phrasebook has been perfect for my situation. I can't comment on how useful it would be to someone coming at the language completely fresh, but once you've got some familiarity with German, this is a great tool to carry around with you, and it's perfect for the casual traveler.

I used this book when I was in Germany recently - I can speak German but there are lots of sections on phrases and everything - it's a phrasebook and minidictionary which made looking up that word I couldn't remember very easy.Great book.

This phrase book is neatly organised and does the job I required, namely to refresh my grasp of the language painlessly and quickly. It is well laid out and a handy size too.

I bought this so that I can learn some German phrases whilst on my commute, this is the ideal size. The content is very good and comprehensive! I enjoy laughing at the chat-up lines section.
