Dormant in winter, but a good buy!
I ordered this in mid-winter, and it arrived looking like a dead stick because it was in winter dormancy. This tree is deciduous. I planted it indoors and mimicked Spring conditions to wake it up. It took almost two months but I just found some new green buds showing up! So the tree isn't dead, just sleepy, but it's making progress now. To the seller's credit, they did include a card saying that the tree is deciduous and could arrive in a dormant state. But I would recommend they expand on that card a bit (the only reason this isn't a five-star review). When my sapling arrived it didn't just look dormant, it looked dead. It was nothing but a stick in some soil. No leaves/needles, no branches; just a small straight stick. I was convinced the tree was dead, but decided to pot it anyway. I feel like the card should have made a little more effort to convince me of the sapling's dormancy. It mentioned the possibility of brown needles, but not a complete lack of any life signs and just a stick. So expectations from the card aside, the tree arrived well and looks like its going to begin its new life as a bonsai tree. I've also purchased near a dozen other saplings from this company and have been happy with all them. So, all in all, I am very happy with my purchases from this company and can whole heartedly recommend their products. (FYI: If you've ever visited a gift shop in the Pacific Northwest, where they've sold little Redwood and Sequoia saplings in clear plastic tubes, this is the same company. And they have become masters at raising, selling, and shipping these saplings live. It really is an impressive feat! And they stand by their products and will replace any trees that die within one year for no charge (less shipping costs). And they put a fair bit of their profits towards planting new trees out in nature. So you know your money is also going towards a good cause.) Recommend!

Zone 9 planting instructions learned from the tree itself
The tree arrived quickly and was good and healthy. The instructions say to plant in well drained soil. This does not work in zone 9 and the plant is not designed for zone 9. The trick is to plant them directly in a small pond. YES a small pond. I will give proof. I planted the one I got on June 14 and it is June 27 and it has grown 1 - 1.5 inches. It had no issues at all being planted in the water here in sunny Jacksonville, FL. I did tons of research on these trees and plan on writing a paper about zone 9 and Dawn Redwood plants. BTW, one of the names the Chinese gave the tree is "Water Pine". I guess they know what they are talking about after thousands of years with this tree around. I bought 4 back in 2014. 3 died in normal soil. They tried but did not work out. The 4th tree, was eroded out of its planting spot and appeared in the water 1-2 years later. It was a very happy tree. The tree showed me how it could live through this accident. The saying is true that ,"Nature finds a way". The little pine with the spider is my not so small Dawn Redwood from this purchase. The large tree is the one that found its way to the water so It could live in Florida.

Extremely Disappointed
Extremely disappointed. When I received it, it looked like a dead stick. I assumed it was just shipped dormant. When I ordered one years ago, it looked about the same when I received it ( it's now over 30'). I went ahead planted it and took care of it. Well, we're now 5 months out. It's still nothing but a dead stick. Of course, by the time I realized this, It's way past the 3 months to be able to do anything.

Glad I order, trees look great, glad it worked out
They look to be in great shape. Great paper work, planting instructions, care for, and more. My only complaint was I received a you Item has shipped delivery date June 3-4😳 I sent vendor text with my concerns of receiving dead trees if in shipping for 2 1/2 weeks! No reply was received back. Lucky I was home today because I even checked yesterday, shipping info had not changed … had NO ideal my hopefully live trees would arrive today.,. They could have sat in this 90* heat all day or for days, I can’t sit here waiting for 2 1/2 weeks!

They have thrived and grown.
I bouught these in April. They came in as small seedlings. We planted them into pots right away and followed the watering and sunlight instructions. They have thrived and grown in the 4 1/2 months between photos. When first planted, I noticed when it rained the shoot would lay over. So we placed bamboo stickes alongside and tied to the shoot to hold it upright. Very pleased with these.
