After World War II, the big band sounds of the earlier part of the decade had been gradually replaced by crooners and vocal groups. Technology played a large part. While singers such as Al Jolson had recorded songs by yelling into a Victrola horn, the new electronic equipment allowed for a softer, more intimate style of singing. Bing Crosby was the leading figure of the crooner sound as well as its most iconic, defining artist, whilst Sinatra's vast appeal to the "bobby soxers" revealed a whole new audience for popular music, making him the first teen idol. Swing bands could also be found in most major cities during the 1930s-1940s, the most popular and famous were the bands of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw, which had national followings and sold huge numbers. Its name says it all
The collection simply puts together many of the best known recordings of that era. Even if you have existing collections of 40's music, these two cds are a pleasant way to enjoy a good selection of the best popular music of that era. Somehow the romantic image of drifting down a river in a punt with the love of your life listening to the latest hits on your portable gramophone seems to be flawed if you had to get up every 3 minutes to turn the record over and wind the thing up! With 25 recordings on each cd things would have been so much easier!

A wonderful collection of songs from a special time. Beautifully recorded, covering the artists and characters from that decade. One of my favourite compilations that I have, and I have many from all decades. Also, this music is somewhat a rarity on CD. Purchase it while you can, you won’t be disappointed.
