Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the Athens band's 1983 album including four bonus tracks. To describe Pylon as ahead of their time is somewhat misleading, because it implies that there was ever a moment when music finally caught up with them. The architects of a sound unlike any of their Athens, Georgia, contemporaries and the inspiration for numerous Post-Punk imitators, Pylon still sounds unlike anything before or since. The B-52s and R.E.M. have both gone on record as stating that Pylon are one of the country's best bands. That's a remarkable legacy for a group that formed more than 30 years ago with the sole intention of playing one show, getting a review in the now defunct New York Rocker, and self-imploding. 16 tracks.

good pylon
it's not gyrate. get that out of your mind. Pylon amazes listeners to this day with the originality of Gyrate. It is perhaps the greatest punk album ever made. One of the greatest recordings in the history of rock. Then there is Chomp which is clearly a new wave endeavor. Is it like the best of XTC's firstr ecordings which were issued at about the same time in 1982 or Human Sexual Response or Echo and the Bunneymen or that first Psychedelic Furs album with 'IMITATION OF CHRIST' on it. People were just catching up with some of those recordings at the time and still held sway by the end of the Clash and Peter Gabriel had not yet went dance mode. REM were just beginning to make a noise and those Blondie's best efforts were behind them by 1982 they were all over the radio. Gyrate goes unnoticed as a punk albeit rock masterpiece and here comes Chomp. Who knows about it? Who cares? This is how much of the history of rock goes. Chomp is a very good new-wave album. Better than some of the new wave artists of the time mentioned and some not mentioned? That's debateable but it is very good and at least comparable, in my opinion better than most. If I would have known about these guys at the time , I would had have been preaching their gospel and if I had known them I would have said 'go back to Gyrate and just expand. it's Coltrane. Mclaughlin, Patti Smith all wrapped into one with other dimensions'. I tend to mention Gyrate more than the album in question so I will explain why I recommend Chomp. Any band that could have made anything as great as Gyrate needs to be understood more fully by at least listening to another recording by them. Chomp, fortunately comes from a totally different genre and still knocks you off your feet after more study.

5 stars for music - minus 2 stars for bad remastering.
Pylon were a great band from Athens, Ga and I was very excited to see these albums re-issued, but they are so overly compressed, they sound terrible. Another victim of the Loudness Wars! Grrr! Get "Hits" - it doesn't have every song, but at least it's not brick-walled by bad compression.

Great band reissued by a Great Label
This CD rocks my face off and is so rad. They've got the energy I need to rockin' dance in bare feet on my new thick pile carpet.

I enjoyed listening to this after so many years from when I heard these live after we moved to the Athens area, but before I met my ex-wife (I'm trying to get us back together). They have aged very well, I think.

Utterly Unique ...
Absolutely nothing like it and along with The Talking Heads the best thing to come out of the New Wave movement. Gyrate's more hard core but this is good too. Don't really get the REM - Jangle Rock comparison. Closer to unpretentious Kraftwerk and Brian Eno and turn left at Beat Happening. But again, there's nothing like it. If you're feeling adventurous check it out.

Excellent "Jangle Rock" from Athens, Georgia.
What would you have if you put The B-52's, Gang of Four, DEVO, Let's Active, a little surf music, and a dash of R.E.M. into a blender and mixed them up ? You would come up with "PYLON," no doubt.Actually, Pylon was one of the pioneers of this so called "jangle rock" movement, and obviously inspired many of the above named bands, but they never seemed to find a large following...and that's really a shame. With their first two albums, "Chomp" and "Gyrate," this wonderful band unleashed some of the most unique and catchy music known to mankind. Quite literally, every single song pulsates, jangles, bleeps, blips, snaps and crackles like nothing you've ever heard before, and the most astounding part is that these songs NEVER get stale, even after hundreds of listens.Although the 2nd album (Chomp) was better produced, it must be noted that their debut (Gyrate) is an equally strong and amazing effort from this one-of-a-kind band.Trust me, if you are a fan of "jangle rock," and you've never had the good fortune of hearing this wickedly innovative band, then you must seek them out at once.I won't single out any particular songs from either album, because these CDs MUST be heard as a whole, and the listener is greatly rewarded when they do so.Don't deny yourself any longer......get PYLON-ized at once, and kick back in Jangle-opia

Maybe the best album out of '80s Athens, Georgia
This is the BOMB! Better than it's predecessor and better than the Love Tractors, REMs, B-52's and others lurking around their scene, these guys (and girl) knew how to put rhythm together with some noise and a melody to write an ACTUAL SONG! Nothing wrong with "Rock Lobster" or "Radio Free Europe", but those bands never got much further than that (at least not while writing music you can actually listen to or enjoy without the HUGE coporate push they ended up getting). Pylon took a different approach than those bands, true, but they also made whole lps worth of GREAT songs - something Stipe, Easter and so on never really did.

Underrated and too unknown
Athens Georgia, early 1980:s. Compact, tight & simple. Short titles. Condensed lyrics. Includes the fantastic singles: Crazy / M-Train & Beep / Altitude. Great cover art. Still...B52:s and R.E.M. got all the limelight, but Pylon deserve to be discovered by more listeners. Crazy was covered by R.E.M. as they thought it was better than anything they've done themselves and they might have a point.Pylon released a handful of singles and two albums (Gyrate 1980 & Chomp 1983) before splitting up. Then reformed and released another great album (Chain 1990) only to split up again and reformed yet again in 2004. Unfortunately guitarist Randall Bewley died of heart attack in 2009.The extended releases of Gyrate ("Plus") & Chomp ("More") includes Singles, B-sides etc and together with Chain they contain everything Pylon ever released. These three albums should be part of any thinking persons sound library.

Good music
In a movie I heard music being played. The actress said it was Pylon. Never heard of it,but I liked it and kept the name in the back of my head. A month ago, for some reason or another, the name Pylon popped up again. Being an inquisitive person I googled on Pylon and learned that they were regarded by members of the B52's and REM (I like the music of both).Pylon is not very well known in Europe so I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Chomp More, Gyrate Plus and the Hits were available at Amazon.de. Chain I bought on Amazon.com (as it wasn't available in Germany). No regrets, good solid rock music. If you like the B52's, you'll like Pylon.
