For years people saw tattoos as a sign of rebellion. A middle finger salute to the rest of the world. Outlaw bikers got tattoos. Sailors on leave in Singapore got tattoos. Lifers in the joint got tattoos. But now in the United States one out of every three adults under forty has a tattoo! So what happened? How did tattoos go from something that was put on you, to an expression that comes from within you? Tattoo Nation tells the story of how four artists, Charlie Cartwright, Jack Rudy, Ed Hardy and Freddy Negrete, helped transform the world of tattoo, and the way we think about tattoos, forever. Narrated by LA Ink's Corey Miller, and featuring the most incredible line up of artists and collectors ever assembled on film, TATTOO NATION tells the tale of how it all started when Charlie Cartwright and Jack Rudy boldly opened the first tattoo parlor, Good Time Charlie's, in the heart of East LA's Chicano community in 1975. Review: WHAT FANTASTIC DVD BUY THIS ONE YOU NEED IT!!!! - To everyone here that has been posting and stereotyping individuals with tattoos as low class, uneducated, and trashy are simply close minded. I personally have an arm sleeve that reminds me every day to stay in the present moment and enjoy life through spiritual ideals. Yes, I am only in my 20s and I have participated in quite a few irresponsible acts throughout my life. More importantly, I have also backpacked Europe, earned my Bachelors degree, worked for the government, started my own business, and I am currently working towards my PhD. To those "high standard" bosses who are posting they would never hire an individual with tattoos: not only are you ignorant and naive but who would want to work for an immoral boss that degrades fellow humans with stereotyping and judgments anyhow? Get off your high horse and start treating people, potential employees and neighbors alike, with respect. Yes, I have met a lot of indecent humans covered in tattoos living by their own justifications and guidelines, but I have met even more of these drifters that don’t have any tattoos! I have also met a few that sit in your egotistical position eager to abuse their power and trump on someone’s potential because they don’t follow “your” ideals on life. Maybe if you opened your minds and your hearts, life and humans wouldn't always appear to you as negative. If your against tattoos that is completely understandable and is your birth right. But please keep your stereotypes to yourself because it is not us right now that resemble the uneducated fools. Review: Great Piece on Tattoo History - This a must for any tattoo enthusiast - the real deal story of how photorealism tattooing began. Fascinating for sure.

A must see for tattoo heads
Outside of webisodes or Internet docs there aren't a large amount of tattoo documentaries to personally own physical copies of, but even so Tattoo Nation is an important look at the history of specific tattooers and tattoo culture. Highly recommend for anyone. Whether tattooer, tattoo enthusiast or just someone in the mood for a good doc.

I love tattoo's and the beauty they bring to viewers
I didn't care for it. I love tattoo's and the beauty they bring to viewers. This was the darker side of it all.

Not what I was expecting from all the FB & Instagram posts
It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't what it seemed to be. In all of their posts on social media sites, it appeared as if this movie was about the full history of tattooing in America. It was really only about the latino influence on tattooing in America. Was still interesting, but again not what it seemed to be.

I have been interested in tattoos since I was sixteen . I am now 42 and my interest is now more than ever . The change in styles is good and the actual history element is really interesting to watch . Narrated by the great black and grey tattooist Corey Miller just rounds it off . To all tattoo fans who want to know how things went from sailors getting them done in ports to ami james and kat von D in tv programmes then this is a good place to start . I recommend this highly

Firstly, I personally think it should be named 'black and grey tattoo nation'. It's a fairly one sided view on a fraction of tattooing from the black and grey side of things. But to be fair, a film to cater for all tattoo art forms would be a triple disc DVD if not more. As it's purely a film on the birth and progression of black and grey tattooing, I don't think it's for those who are new to the tattooed lifestyle as it could portray black and grey as the no.1 form. Traditional, Japanese, tribal and new school are a few others most definitely not to be ignored. Besides from this minor fault in film title, it very inspiring. To see how tattooing icons such as Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete started in the business with their style all those years ago in a very underground (in some areas illegal) scene, makes you kind of wish it was still behind closed doors. But it's the way a now highly addictive and popular art form would be expected to go, and Tattoo Nation makes you appreciate what the world has been forced to accept.
