It Makes Fire
It does what it says on the tin (box) a fire starter for the outdoors, one of the better ferro rods, durable, the red means you do not loose it (or leave it behind) in the woods. If you need one, get this one!

Easy to get a strike
I would prefer a longer ferro rod personally as your hands can get in the way of seeing what you're doing. It produces great sparks easily. It is however much harder to light shavings than you think ! This is the scout version which has 3000 strikes and is ideal to practice your technique.

easy to use!
Have previously bought a very fancy one of these from etsy and was unimpressed. This one is so easy even my 4 year old got the hang of it in minutes. A great addition to any camping trip.

Light my Fire
Bought as a 'solid' back up to my mini-Bic lighter. I purposely selected this on the basis of it being compact and lightweight. I only received this last night (thank you, quick delivery) and have already used it. Once the protective coating has been removed via approx 20 'strokes' the rod chucks out an impressive array of sparks. It is compact, as known - and I have large hands (glove size 14 - very hard to find) so I would not want to use this for my primary source of ignition but people with smaller hands will not have this issue. The striker also looks a little flimsy but I can always use my pocket knife (etc) as an alternative striker. As I bought this as a back up I am comfortable.

Well made with a back-up whistle and only 25g
Not used it yet but it is well made with a back-up whistle (not as loud as a proper whistle) and it only weighs 25g. If you want an ultralight kit list then this is the lightest I could find.

Keep them dry or the corrode
For some reason, even the unworn painted part of the rod, they corrode when left for long periods. I think it is slight moisture or perhaps they don’t like being near other ferro rods but they corrode or oxidise creating deep pits in the rod. Ever worked out why but they are still very good. They are very comfortable and create a nice shower of sparks. I have quite a few of them in various sizes and they all perform excellent. There are two types of ferro rod that I have come across, first is these Light my Fire type that are very hard metal and require only a light slow scratch to create sparks and the second is the softer ones that require a fast hard scratch. Both require a good striker or you get nowhere fast. Now the difference is that the softer ones create big fat globules of burning metal and are excellent at lighting damp tinder whereas the LMF hard type create a lot of sparks that are far smaller snd can require batheing the tinder in sparks to light. Both are really useful depending on the weather or tinder. I cannot say which I prefer as they both work really well.
