Wear a Xl, would a 2X be too big or just fine?

Champion runs true to size - If you are a big XL a 2X would be fine but if you like a honest snug fit. Stick with the XL.

My 10 year old son wears an XL in kids. What size adult shirt does he need?

For me my son went right from boys xl to a men's medium. But he is also tall. Hope that helps.
