Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Lie Down with Lions. Review: A love story - I have read most of Follett's one was surprised to find "Lie down with Lions." A huge adventure story with nonstop suspense that kept my heart pounding. Beginning in Paris with various protest groups of young people from several countries, the action moves to Afghanistan where a young Doctor and his wife are living in a poor remote village, having been sent by a medical charity to minister to the public and the wounded from the war. I had forgotten that Russia spent several years in Afghanistan attempting to make it into a communist government. The doctor is member of the underground French Communist Party and he is in Afganistan to spy on the guerrillas who are fighting the Russian Army. An American spy, who was the previous lover of the Doctor's wife, is in the country to advise and unite the guerrillas from various groups to defeat the Russian army. From here on, it's a thrilling ride to the end of the book and worth the read of this book written in 1986. Review: Fun book for spy novel. - I’m reading this book now. I read this nearly 40 years ago and thought I would pick something up just to read while I’m waiting around for my grandson. It’s a little slow in the beginning, but it was character building and a good read.

Great mix…
of over the top romanticism and historical/sociocultural/geopolitical facts. Eminently entertaining and, even to a student of the region/era (albeit not an expert) like myself, based on enough reality to be of some real, if inherently limited, substance.

Not bad.
Not his best work. A good story but uninspired writing. Maybe a contract filler. I will continue to read his books.

"W" .... Please Read
Ok - so here we go...a Beautiful Inteligent woman with men fawning all around her...she must decide between two - the secretive stoic man or the well dressed doctor...yup..she goes for the doctor whose thin veneer becomes thinner each line we read.....arrrgggggghhhh....haven't we been here before ? But wait ! These two are just knitting needles used to create a taptestry of a story. This story is rich in detail and information. Information which is useful to us in understanding ourselves, our country and yes, our enemy. One wonders if "W"'s generals ever passed this sort of information on to him. If the Whole of the Soviet Union could not defeat...(sorry, I am going "there" again.) Still a fascinating read, which leaves one wondering which is the real Afghanistan ? That of "Kite Runner"? or that of Lie Down With Lions ? Read "Where Men Win Glory" no easy answers. BTW - when did people start rating books by their prices ?!?!? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot !

Another great read.
As always a great read by Ken Follett. However, I did consider removing a star due to one rather lengthy, extreme sex scene. I had read reviews and someone had mentioned the 'porn' and I thought, can't be that bad, it's Ken Follett. Well be warned, there is one section that really is sexually graphic and those puritans beware, you may want to skip those pages altogether. That said, great book.

To Those Who See It Through
In a hostile world it may seem hard to survive in an unsympathetic country with strange and ruthless mores. But putting aside all challenges may or may not be the only way to reach nirvana. Proceed with passion!

Much suspense and action while educating to cultural conditioning and political warfare and its impact on women relative to respect, agency and empowerment.
