Review: Simple yet creative - I've been following Nick's Facebook page for a little while, but I've never met him real life. I work as a trainer and a massage therapist in Clackamas, a suburb of Portland, Oregon. When I saw that Nick came out with this book, I decided to purchase the Kindle edition to see what I would learn. I like his no nonsense approach when it comes to the claims and propaganda that are pushed in the fitness industry, so I thought the book would be worth the purchase. Plus the gym where I work is CPC Fitness and Fat Loss where our main goal is strength training and HIIT, so I felt the purchase was pretty appropriate. And it most definitely was. I don't think I learned anything too crazy, but that's because I've been at this for a while, but he is straightforward and logical with his approach and I appreciate that in this book. He provides tons of exercise examples and templates for not only the workouts, but the warm ups and cool downs. I felt like this book opened a can of creativity worms for me a little and I just sat down and wrote 4 warm-ups using 8 different exercise for each warm up using both the exercises Nick provides in this book combined with other warm up movements that I use, with the option to write at least 3 more just by varying the exercises and maybe adding in a few more. And that doesn't even go into how many potential exercise templates I could create with the approximately 20 he provides, along with variations of those with the addition of other exercises I know and use. This is sort of a gold mine in that sense. I appreciate the work that was put into this and the renewed spark for adding that layer of creativity to my programs. Thank you, coach. Review: Anyone wanting to lose fat while building strength should buy this book!!!! - I have been following Nick Tumminello on Facebook for a couple of years now and even had the privilege of hearing him speak at a recent fitness conference. He is one of the most well-respected and innovative coaches in the fitness industry. I have learned so much from him during this time and was extremely excited when I found out his book Strength Training for Fat Loss was coming out. This book is phenomenal!!! He takes scientific-based programming and translates it into straightforward advice and practical exercise programs designed for people at all levels of fitness from beginner to advanced. The exercises are explained in EXCELLENT detail along with pictures so that anyone who is unfamiliar with any of the exercises can learn to perform them quickly and easily. The circuits, complexes, and combinations he puts together in this book will help anyone who wants to lose fat, build muscle, improve strength, and feel awesome. I am looking forward to utilizing these workouts in a lot of my own training, as well in the programming for my clients that I train at my gym. Finally, Nick does an excellent job of providing simple and straightforward nutrition advice and strategies important in any fat loss program. No gimmicks, no silly miracle hypes, no detoxes or cleanses... just proven scienced-based nutritional information. Thanks Nick for putting out a QUALITY fitness book that is sure to help so many people reach their health and fitness goals. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book!!!!

Quick review
Nick Tumminello is one of my favorite professionals in the fitness industry. I don't think there are many people whose thoughts resonate with me so much as his. So to say that I was truly excited to get to read this book is an understatement. The information is very simple to read. No fancy words without explanation, no jargon, no trying to impress you by confusing you. There's only one term I dislike: "metabolic strength training". What type of strength training is not "metabolic"? Every type of physical activity elevates the metabolism. Lots of pros use the term, I don't see the benefit. It's just confusing to regular people, in my opinion. I like it very much that the information is based on principles. Unlike most fitness trends that come and go like clothing styles, principles are here to stay (and perhaps improve further). Important training principles that the author brings out for fat loss: high intensity, exercises involve the entire body, extended repetitive effort. Exercise selection is very detailed and I surely got some new ideas from there. I'm however a little hesitant to use some combinations and complexes with my clients as they are quite advanced. For example, bent-over row --> romanian deadlift --> hang clean --> overhead push press. But there's always the possibility to take these principles and ideas and develop your own combinations and complexes as a fit pro. I would recommend the book for all people interested in fat loss. Principle-based training and nutrition books are a minority.

and I have to say I love the format of the programs
I've been working out for three weeks with this program, and I have to say I love the format of the programs. I like the way the programs are laid out in tables. You just flip to the exercise section if you are unfamiliar with one. This is easier said than done because there is no index. I knocked off a star for this. Otherwise, this is a very useful book. The model demonstrates the exercises well but the photos are low quality and a bit grainy. I like the way the author outlines how to make up your routines based on his formula. I will post an updated review after a few months following the programs.

Simple, effective, and fun workouts for fat loss.
I'm a personal trainer and buy quite a few books to both gain new insight and use for recommendations to friends who might not have access to a trainer or even a gym. I've grown to really respect Tumminello's training outlook because he bases his recommendations on the best available evidence instead of hype. This book is no quick fix. The truth is hard work and consistency are the keys to building the body and performance that we want. I was so pleased to see quality illustrations and instructions for each exercise as well as enough information about the "why" behind his training plans that readers will actually learn something without being overwhelmed. Most importantly, the variety of circuits, complexes and combinations he provides as ideas are fun! Even if you're an experienced athlete you'll find fresh ideas in these pages. I used a few of his metabolic strength workouts with clients today to test drive them and got very positive feedback. "That was hard but fun. I really liked it!" His work is up to date with current thinking in exercise science, it's very friendly to the average reader who may be inexperienced as well as trainers and experienced enthusiasts looking for new ideas. I loved the complexes in particular. Buy this one, you won't regret it.

Solid info but not for me.
First, unlike most of the people who have obviously stacked reviews here, I'm not a trainer, I don't work in the fitness industry, and I don't know Nick Tumminello. I have bought some of his other products, read some articles, and watched his videos. It's because of this that I bought Strength Training for Fat Loss. Second, I REALLY wanted this program to work for me but in the end it just wasn't a good fit. POSITIVES: Nick's philosophy about fat loss, strength training, and nutrition was spot on and will be invaluable for those who are new to training/nutrition. I also appreciate his no BS writing style. So many books on training/diets/nutrition are filled with marketing and selling schemes by the author so it's refreshing not to see this in Strength Training for Fat Loss. I also appreciated the huge variety of exercises. Seriously, there are several chapter dedicated to descriptions, photos, variants, etc. NEGATIVES: For me I hit a road block when I got to the workouts (Chapter 9). It's pretty inflexible, i.e. you're lifting 4 days/week and there aren't any options for a 3 day, whole body routine. I've done a variety of training protocols over the years (3-, 4-, and 5-days per week) and for me my body tends to do better with lifting 3 days/week and it's more conducive for juggling work, family, etc. If there was a 3-day option I would've been satisfied. What's also missing from this program is a support service. If you have questions, concerns, need clarification, etc. there's no forum community to discuss Strength Training for Fat Loss or contact Tumminello. I may have missed it but I didn't even find an email link. And let's face it, fat loss is not fun and for many people so a support vehicle can be critical for getting over the speed bumps. For me, I had several questions regarding the training templates. I also have some preexisting conditions with regards to my back and shoulder so it would have been great to get suggestions about substitutions exercises. I liked Chapter 3 on nutrition and agree that in the long term the "No-Diet" approach is necessary. However, IME/IMO not tracking calories when beginning a fat loss program (or any program) isn't the right way to go, especially if this is all new to you. Everyone knows that your nutrition program will drive your training/physique goals so you could burn a lot of time in the gym without seeing measurable results if you're off base on what/how much you're eating. I'd rather track my food intake for a few weeks to make sure I'm fine and then lay off if I feel comfortable doing so, than find out after the fact that I was messing up. I'd revise my rating/review if the issues were addressed with having a more flexible training format (full body vs. split), as well as a dedicated support community for people who are going through the program. If not, I'll be sending the book back for a refund. It's too bad though, I really wanted to support Tumminello in this but in the current format his program just isn't for me.

Very good big! Packed with lots of information!
Very good big! Packed with lots of information! This book is large and is packed with a ton of very useful and very real information. The author is very knowledgeable and I am very thankful that he took the time to write and to put this book together. I like that he talks about real world things (like cheat/reward day for meals) and provides solutions. He has a very unique and nice approach that I believe is very workable. I cannot afford a personal trainer and I believe this book, if followed, can assist me in getting close to where I need to be. Would definitely recommend this book and it has very good information in it on meals as well as a lot of other things. I ordered the paperback version and just flipping through it, it is worth every penny. It is very readable and I will sit down in this downtime (of COVID-19) and pull all the good stuff out of it and start using it, of course!

Diverse Exercise Program...that works if you put in the effort.
Remember there is no free lunch in life or fitness. You have to put in an effort. There is no magic bullet. I enjoyed this book. Informative and descriptive. The workouts are very diverse and challenging. You as the reader can adjust and adapt the workouts to meet your needs. I would highly recommend that idea. I do not agree with doing the sample workouts for consecutive multiple weeks. I either change them up after one or two weeks and try another or skip a week or two and do some other exercise programs, etc. It's not a static workout program. You can be flexible. If you don't like something or getting bored you won't complete them. The vast number of exercises keeps it fresh. And do not go too heavy on the weights/dumbbells. Lighter weight works better with most of the exercises and you won't have the endurance to finish if too heavy. Also, I would experiment with the number of reps/sets. I like to use 15, 12, 9 reps for 3 sets instead of the recommended as one example. But you as the reader can adjust accordingly whatever you feel that best fits you.

Reading it through first made all the difference!!
I've gotten on really well with this book, but you do need to take the time to read it to fully understand the training concepts before you dive in. It is written in plain language and I found it easy to follow and understand but this is perhaps not the ideal book if you just want to start the workouts immediately. Having said that, this book has revolutionised my workouts in the gym. I am much more organised, driven and the workouts are so much more intense. I love the variety of the workouts, and I have learned to use a lot more of the equipment in the gym with confidence - I actually quite enjoy working out now! Perhaps most importantly, I have shed more weight, and toned up more in the past couple of months that I had achieved in the past year - this book has really made a big difference for me!
