Sesamee K440 4 Dial Bottom Resettable Combination Brass Padlock with 4-Inch Hardened Steel Shackle and 10,000 Potential Combinations

I bought this lock based on several online reviews. I have three of them, and one with the stainless shackle, that I accidentally ordered. I meant to get this marine grade one with the Brass shackle when I ordered that one. All four are fantastic. Changing combinations is very simple. One time I failed to push the "set" pin all the way in, but I quickly realized my mistake. Sometimes it can take a little more force than expected on one of my locks. Just know that it should go almost as far "In" as it can. The lock is very solid. I cannot stress this enough. They make Master Lock products feel loose and wobbly. I never thought they were until I started using one of these. I have seen the comparable looking model from ML. It is actually slightly different dimensions. These locks have a slight outward angle, whereas the ML is straight up and down. I admit I have seen the ML version of this lock functioning for 25+ years on a friends sailboat. It still works. But it is a pain to work the dials. I have read very few reviews that support ML as much. However I have seen several personal testaments that re-affirm the quality of Sesamee Locks. It may be hype, but handling the two makes me think otherwise. I have one observation, not really a negative. Due to my own ignorance, I thought my lock had a problem. I didn't realize that when the number wheels are spun in a decreasing direction, they stop at 0. I don't know why, they just do. Passing 9 in the increasing direction, it will go to 0 and continue increasing. I have adapted to setting the locks to all 0's when I'm done. I guess that was why they are made that way. Would I buy them again, absolutely! I'm sold on these over Master locks from now on. I read too many reviews about how the Master locks failed to remember their combo, or just plain stopped working. These things need better marketing, they are 10x the quality of anything comparable! I have been reformed. Gone is the day of the loose wobbly master lock. These just feel like quality. Updated: Still going strong. The one outside is still perfect. No issues with any yet. My master lock failed. I had to break it to get past it. I spray the Sesame with lube occasionally, because I like them spinning smooth.

We have used this brand of locks, for years, in fact some have been handled so often over time, the brand letters had worn off on the old ones, & I couldn't tell what brand they were. Finally, using a light & strong magnifying glass, I could read enough letters, to figure it out.... & immediately ordered more, for additional needs... The 4 old ones, were still in perfect 'working order', & I just needed more of them, for new purposes, & I wanted he same brand. The numerals are easily seen, & the dials roll easily. But my FAVORITE feature, is that after you've opened the lock, you can quickly roll the dials upward with your thumb, & they all stop on ZERO, so even if someone is with you, with lightning fast action, you can remove your combination, without even looking at the numbers. I always leave the locks, set on those zeros, for safety, & convenience... I can even open one in the dark, knowing each one is starting at ZERO, so I just count the 'clicks' that can be felt & slightly heard. These Sesamee Combination locks can be set to your own personal numbers, & several of ours get daily opening & re-locking, & they have lasted for many years of use, without a 'hitch' .... They are exposed to the weather, but an occasional cleaning & little 'puff' of dry graphite, & they are ready to go for more years of use... best locks we've ever used, & NONE have ever failed us.

Someone pointed out that if you spin the wheels forward they spin 0 to 9 and keep going 0 to 9 again etc. If you spin the wheels backward they will all stop at 0, WHY? well it allows you to open the lock in complete darkness. Spin all wheels backwards one at a time until they stop. Do that to each wheel. Now all wheels are at 0. Spin the first one forward 1,2,3 etc. one click at a time until you get the number of clicks for that number. Do the same for wheels 2, 3 and 4. Press down on the shackel and the lock will open. Practice this a couple of times with your eyes closed and you will see how brilliant this idea is. The other advice is to get a spray can of Houdini lock lube. Is what the locksmiths use and it is designed for locks. WR-40 loosens and cleans but it doesn't lube a lock properly. Houdini is available from Amazon or some locksmiths. A have a lot of Master locks. They work good at first but when they fail it's always because you can't get them open. You may need a locksmith or welder to cut them off? You can do it yourself with a Dremel tool and a cut off wheel. Forget about hacksaws and hammers. They either don't work or damage what you're trying to protect. Don't worry, I've been there. Remote service from a professional can cost $1000 or more. A quick trip to the locksmith to cut one off costs about $65. I have decided to replace any locks that look like they have problems, rust or difficult opening etc. right away before I have a lockout. Hope this helps someone Captain John 49

well constructed and easy to use. I bought this to lock a shed in a cottage near the beach - a harsh environment which is subject to year round salt mist. The lock has not failed yet but the hardened steel shackle begins to rust within a year - this is mostly cosmetic but I have replaced the lock after 3 - 4 years (even after scrubbing the rust off and WD40) to be on the safe side that it won't freeze up.

The Sesamee and Master locks are virtually identical in exterior size and appearance. This lock (K0436) has a solid brass shackle and brass case. For a harder shackle but less weather resistance consider the Sesamee K436 with hardened steel shackle, brass case - they are otherwise identical. We have/use many of both lock types and prefer the harder-to-find Sesasmee than the widely distributed Master lock - good thing Amazon sells both. The combo set pin on this lock is (smartly) inside the shackle hole, and is a stout flat sided pin. It is not on the outside case hole like the Master lock, the Master lock set key is a flat relatively thin metal key which feels flimsy to use - as if it just might break off not comforting. There is a video on YouTube showing a locksmith fumbling with a demo/cut-away Sesamee lock and having trouble doing it - possibly implying the Master product is superior? We don't know. That is simply NOT our real-world case/experience. The Sesamee's actually combo-set easier than our Masters. Also we do not use these locks (Master or Sesamee) in a high-vibration environment e.g. trucking so cannot comment on propensity for combo changes/malfunctions on all settable locks (other Master/other reviews) we have never had that problem. It is really nice to set your own combos to easily remembered series of numbers rather than remember a totally random, manufacturer determined, number sequence. The Sesamee has a nice feature where the combo wheels can be rolled back to zeros (they hit a stop in that direction) which is useful for operating the lock in dark low light situations. Can't do that with the Master lock. CCL (Corbin Cabinet Lock Company) was founded in 1882 in New Britain, CT is the originator of the Sesamee Brand 4-wheel combination lock design. The Sesamee lock is now made overseas (Taiwan) and the quality remains high. The Master lock is made in the US.

Of all the different combination locks I've owned, this one is a standout. The case is heavy brass and the shackle appears the same (though it may be brass-colored steel). The numerals on the dials are clearly written, the detents between for a fingernail are deep, the individual dials move smoothly and seem to stop with the number in correct position, not in between. The requirement of a "key" to set the combination, as opposed a keyless type, is no big deal; not many lock combinations are changed after being intially set. Its brass construction gives it a nautical look, which is appropriate, since it secures the lid of my dock box at the marina. The shackle is also ever-so-slightly smaller in diameter to another lock I've used so it doesn't bind in the opening of the dock box latch. I trust its weather resistance will live up to my expectations. It's made in Taiwan and looks to be as solidly built as many of their tools.

Used on the inside of a gate in the path of the corrosive Hawaiian trade winds, brass is the 2nd best material after stainless steel. I couldn't find a combination all stainless lock (including shank). The 4-digit combination provides convenience over a keyed lock for a high traffic gate, and the lock isn't subject to constant vibration from being on a vehicle and subject to inadvertent changing of the combo (the biggest complaint from all the "1" and "2" ratings). The reduced security from a brass shank (vs hardened steel) and the possibility of someone trying all 9999 combinations is negated by using this lock on the inside of my property. Hardened steel will eventually rust where I live. All 4 dials spin in either direction, but you can't pass zero in the negative direction. When the correct combo is set, the lock doesn't automatically spring open, so someone can't just spin-spin-spin all 9999 numbers. They have to spin-pull-spin-pull, much more effort. Once it is pulled open it will automatically spring open if you attempt to close it with the correct combo set. However, you can immediately spin all the combo dials after it is opened, so I don't understand one reviewer's complaint that he wanted to hang the lock opened without giving away the combo. Fine print on packaging says periodically lube with graphite. Do not use oil. Maybe that's what I have been doing wrong with my other locks? Update 12/29/17 - I didn't believe all the complaints of no "open sesemee", but in only a matter of months it happened to me. After a couple months with no action, I needed to open my gate, set the combo, but it didn't open. I tried several times, resetting the combo and trying every number nearby. I double checked the combo against another lock set with the same combo. I figured the internals were jammed so I sprayed silicone lube in every crevice I could find, including the dials. I slapped it against the gate a few times to free things up, but to no avail. I repeated the process 3 times (lube, slap, retry spinning the dials). I started cutting the shank with my Dremel not knowing that I still had the combo set, and when I was almost through the lock sprang open. Thus, my rating went from 5 stars to 1 star, only because I couldn't give it zero stars. A few more points about this lock. Referring to the attached photo, it only took me about 30 seconds with my Dremel to cut through about 80-90% of the shank. Very soft brass. The right side of the shank is still shiny brass (more or less), but the left side is noticeably more corroded with the green stuff just starting. The tip of shank's left side that was inserted into the lock has a copper color. Also notice how ugly the body looks. This is only about 8 months in a humid environment about 1 mile from the ocean. I had a stainless steel lanyard attached to the top of the shank so that the lock could hang when the gate was opened. Before I bought this I asked a metallurgist friend of mine if stainless coupled to brass would cause galvanic corrosion. He asked me what type of brass? I didn't know. He asked me what type of stainless? The normal 304 I replied. He said it might. This is the only reason I can think of that would cause one side of the shank to corrode more severely than the other. I concluded from the conversation that not all brass is created equal. The lock is stamped "Taiwan".

I have zero affinity and zero skill in all things mechanical. I read the directions twice and studied the illustration on the back of the package. After reading some reviews that said that people could not properly set a combination for this lock, I proceeded cautiously. The key to correctly setting a combination is to look at the illustration showing how the metal pin that comes in the package is to be pressed down into the reset hole next to the shackle. If you insert the metal pin perpendicular to either broad face of the lock the pin will not fit all the way down into its recessed hole. The loop of the pin should face outward, pointing away from the body of the lock, aligned with the thin side of the lock as shown in my photo. Press the pin all the way down until the bottom of the pin loop touches the body of the lock. Then input your chosen combination. Works like a charm! If I can correctly input a combination into this lock, anybody can. Really.

I looked everywhere for a combination lock with a shackle longer than 85mm. I got two of these, the shackle's inside diameter is about 105mm, so are perfect for what I need. Delivery was a week sooner than stated, I got a message that it was being sent the same day I ordered it. The locks look to be a very high-quality product and they feel quite heavy. Also noteworthy is the fact that these locks are suitable for vision impaired and blind people. First Amazon purchase, so far I'm very satisfied.

I use this lock to attach my boat trailer on my truck while on the water. I wanted something simple (with no keys) with a long shackle. This lock is a pretty flimsy lock that will keep honest people from taking your stuff. One thing I dislike is the fact it wont stay closed if the numbers are not "scrambled" prior to closure. Also, you must press the shackle down to release it once the good combination is put it.
