The RKO Story

The movie studio RKO doesn't have the long gloried history of many of the other studios but RKO did manage to turn out several masterpieces such as King Kong on pages 60-61, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame starring Charles Laughton on pages 138-139, The Little Foxes starring Bette Davis on pages 160-161, and the following four films are favorites of mine: 1. NOTORIOUS on pages 212-213 2. TILL THE END OF TIME on page 213 3. THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES on page 214 4. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE on page 215There are several other movies in this book that you might choose as your favorites, but you'll have to buy this book and see for yourself.

Richard Jewell's book is simply the most thorough and most authoritative study of the RKO movie production studio ever written. It covers every film chronologically and seems never to fail to offer insight into the thinking of its creators, and the performances of its stars. The films are supplemented with good photos...but it's the research required to produce such a volume that is really impressive. Jewell displays his love of film....and all that is required to produce high quality work....throughout his well written narrative. This is a comprehensive reference book really, that provides "a big picture" perspective of the work of one small, but mighty studio, during the Golden Age of Hollywood..

Beautifully put together history of RKO. Photo-packed as a book about films should be with a synopsis of every film and details galore. A quote from the text tells the RKO story: "The supreme irony of RKO's existence is that the studio earned a position of lasting importance in cinema history largely BECAUSE of it's extraordinarily unstable history. Since it was the weakling of the Hollywood's majors, RKO welcomed a diverse group of individualistic creators and provided them, at least until the Hughes era, with an extraordinary degree of freedom to express their artistic idiosycracies."Any film buff NEEDS to have this book in their library.

I absolutely loved this book. It has pictures of all the films filmed at RKO from day one! A great reference for film buffs. I highly recommend this book.

A wonderful photo-filled look at the three decades that RKO existed. It is amazing to that RKO made so many movie classics[Kong, Kane] and yet also produce quite a number of duds at the same time. Essential reading for those wanting to learn more about the only Golden Age studio not to survive.

I really learned a lot about this little Movie studio. Very interesting reading and the photos are beautiful. A good addition to my collection of Hollywood movie studios.

I bought this book for reference and it listed every motion picture that RKO released......great for the researcher.....lots of interesting information.....lb

Good value for a slice of Movie studio history,pity no colour photographs only black/white. Bought as a used item: only renovation was two pages needed attaching to the binder. The paper jacket was in good condition apart from a few frayed edges which were repaired with a quality film thus as new. Well satisfied!
