NieR Automata Game of the YoRHa Edition (PS4) Review
NieR: Automata is a unique and captivating game that blends different genres to create a thrilling experience. The combat system is satisfying, and there are plenty of sidequests to perform along the way to make money for more upgrades and chips. The story is amazing and touches upon many elements of identity, theology, and philosophy. The game's world is stunning, with a futuristic dystopia that is both beautiful and desolate. The game's soundtrack is also highly praised for its unique vocals and intensity. NieR: Automata is described as an action RPG, but it's really an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink kind of game. In between hearty chunks of feel-good hack-and-slash, you’ll trade a fireworks display worth of projectiles with flying enemies, hack into robot mainframes, read a text adventure or two, and even brawl with a pair of psychotic twins. This radically changing gameplay makes for a thrilling roller coaster ride. Combat is the heart and soul of Automata, but there’s more to do than just stab robots and search for the truth. Fun money-making enterprises like fishing and hunting are available. Critics praised the game's story, themes, gameplay, and music. However, some reviewers found the story to be convoluted and difficult to understand. The game also drew criticism for some visual and technical problems. The PC release drew a mixed response due to technical issues that were not officially addressed until 2021. Overall, NieR: Automata is a criminally underrated JRPG hybrid with a passable story, unique storytelling structure, excellent gameplay, and an inspired soundtrack. It is a must-play for fans of action RPGs and those looking for a unique gaming experience.

A thought provoking RPG
NieR: Automata is a unique action RPG that touches deeply philosophical themes and blends them into satisfying gameplay. The unconventional spirit of it’s creator Yoko Taro shines through. You can play it standalone but I would highly recommend starting with the prequel NieR Replicant first.

Value, value, value...
For the price, you really can't go wrong. Easily 50 hours of fun. One of the best games ever made. The DLC is a download code but that only makes sense. The disc is probably a 25GB blueray. I know from playing the PC port of the vanilla game that was around 26GB to download. Then 45GB ISH when installed. Logically, much to some people's dismay, you will not fit anything extra onto an already crammed disc. The DLC however, is great! The theme you get with the game is nice and the avatar set is also nice. A neat bonus, nothing to write to the queen about though. I use a non Pro PS4 and the performance is acceptable. Only got this so I have a physical copy. Many frame drops but never becomes unplayable. If you don't care about physical media, and have a PC (there is no such thing as a PC that can run this game perfectly - Automata speedrunning community) that's decent. Get it on there instead for a much more enjoyable experience. Overall, for £30. Seriously worth a buy, you'd be insane not to honestly. Great graphics even though I notice the downgrade in quality from PC. The best soundtrack literally ever. Amazing gameplay, phenomenal story and writing. Keep in mind these are only my opinions.

Not a masterpiece, but certainly a flawed materpiece - worth your time
A lot of people call this a masterpiece, but it would be much more accurate to call it a flawed masterpiece for a few simple reasons. Firstly the positives: - The game has good character design and excellent combat animations. - It features a few different weapon types (short sword, large sword, spear, fist fighting) and a series of light or heavy combos that can be interchanged quite loosely from one combo's button presses to the other (circle and triangle for light and heavy attacks respectively). - The movement is fast, you can double jump and use your pod support unit to shoot or perform utility attacks, as well as hang glide from. Traversing the environment feels fine. - Evasion and timed parried from dodges work well, some games implement this poorly (i.e fighting game Sifu) but here the evasion parries feel fair and effective. - The music is genuinely wonderful, that's all that needs to be said about the music. - The UI and visual art (boot up sequences, hacking minigame etc) are well designed and add to immersion. - There's various chips or fuses you can equip and level up (increase damage, defense, restore health on enemy hit or kill, and many more which are important as make the game easier). - You can collect intel, do basic fishing and side quests. - The voice acting in the English version I played is good, solid VAs. - The game's director and developers are clearly a fan of retro gaming the likes of the Sega and Nintendo from the late 80s and early 90s. The game at various points will shift the camera to a 2D locked side view turning the game briefly into a side scroller, this works mostly well, but will detail any negatives in the next section. - Further to the above, the game as many shmup (shoot em up) moments in an aerial flight unit. Anyone who's played R-Type, Galaxy force, Darius Gaiden/G-Darius, Radiant Silvergun, Space harrier, Panzer Dragoon will feel right at home. - Additionally this game features something the game Returnal also adopted later, bullet hell/shmup scenarios in general combat, most enemies fire 3D projectiles at you, sometimes in a pattern. It often works well being brought into a 3D setting. - The story line is good, it has some interesting directions and revelations which are enough to keep the player invested. It also has enough detail to feel immersive, and the voice dialog is written well. I wish there were a sequel upon finishing. It's general synopsis is earth has been ravaged by machine life, humanity now retreated to the moon has created human-like androids that fight for them to reclaim earth, this android attack force is called YoRHa; they operate from a satellite base in orbit called 'Bunker'. - There are 3 playable characters, 2B the main protagonist, a YoHRa attack model, 9S; the seemingly younger scanner and observation model. And a 3rd A2 which I won't give any details about. )A2 was perhaps my favourite character). - There are 26 endings, but most of these are just silly quick credit screens (that pass in fast forward) after you do something silly like fail a mission etc. There are actually 5 important endings you want to focus on getting; A, B, C, D and E. These are quite linear and you'll generally get them from just playing the game, but C, D and E are based on the end choices so be aware of this to make sure you get the true ending. - This game feels strongly inspired by Metal Gear Solid 2 in many ways (aside from the story and setting) codec calls, orange 'big shell' looking factory at the start, social commentary on humans and AI, 4th wall breaking moments, a specific boss fight with katana swords, definitely MGS2 inspired, but this is not a bad thing at all - that was a huge game. Negatives: - The environment's visuals are poor, they don't look like they're from 2017 but rather from a decade prior. The level or field design, platforming etc is also not great at times, feeling a decade out of date. This isn't to be misconstrued with the game having purposely dated design choices in the retro portions of game play, it's just not great level design. Lots of big square areas walled in. - The pacing of the game is bad at times, the game gives you a degree of freedom and there are side quests, but navigation isn't the games strong suit (even with transport that eventually unlocks from booths dotted around different areas) the map is somewhat poor also to use. If one wants to focus on the story, they'll find they will be running around large areas feeling like the story has slumped or there isn't real urgency or direction. Generally the 1st act picks up after the midway point and towards the end. The 2nd act is a waste of time for the most part and will be a sticking point for many players as you will be repeating most of the same content for a good 15+ hours. And the 3rd act feels like when the game really kicks into high gear - and pacing from one event to the other is honed in on. I think the problem here is giving a whole section of same content to the player (as the character 9S) whereas in the 3rd act you can switch between two character at different points in the story and this perhaps should have been done for 2Bs segment in the 1st act. It would have negated the strong repetition and still gotten 9S' side of the story across. - The hacking mini games as 9S might not be everyone's cup of tea, it's short retro shoot em up gameplay and will be the main attack over and over, as this character has poor fighting ability. - The difficulty curve can be a little erratic, at the start for instance you have a fairly long 40 min introductory area to play through, and then a fairly unforgiving boss. If you die you will start from the beginning, bad design here not to have any save function but game saves do improve after with the boots dotted around. Verdict 4/5 - a flawed masterpiece. The interesting story, great characters (2B and A2 especially), good voice acting and written dialog along with the wonderful music. The thought put into the world and events that take place all offer an immersive and engaging experience in the story. The combat and it's retro moments keep things interesting even if the pacing can be off at times. And 9S' story in the 2nd segment is a repetitive grind of already witnessed events mostly; but grind it out as the last act involving the character A2 is worth it. And you'll get to see the game's full ending. A flawed masterpiece, I think a sequel with higher budget and newer tech could create much better environments, and hopefully better pacing. And fun fact, this game saved Japan's game industry as they realized making a game they want rather than making a purely Westernized game, creates a much better game that sells well. I'd recommend getting this game, there's not many like it, especially amongst the Western ideological slop released today.

Masterpiece
Nier Automata is a game that in my opinion, for anyone who enjoys video games is a must buy. It is one of the best games I have ever played by far. The gameplay offers different modes during your play through of the game and it quite unique in comparison to other games. The music in this game is epic. It is the best soundtrack I have ever heard in a game and in combination with the events that occur in the game it is absolutely something that needs to be experienced. The story is no doubt a bit eccentric, however its most definitely something that has great emotion when paired with the fantastic soundtrack. The amount of content in this game is astounding when you factor in the side missions, there is much value to be had from this game. It is a game which has excellent quality across the majority of the game, the only slight marks against it are some of the background graphics (EG Buildings in the city) can look a bit drab due to the choice of colour palette, however you can forgive small issues such as this when you look at what the game delivers. I cant recommend this game enough, anyone who enjoys video games as a medium needs to experience this game.

Can you give 6 stars?
I have played video games continually since the days of the ZX Spectrum - about 35 years, dipping into most major franchises. This is my all-time favourite game and not many others even come close. The story is compelling, complex and interesting - I've played through all the main endings three times and I'm still realising the significance of some casual interactions and situations. I'm not very bothered about combat in games, but it's good here if that's what you like. There's not a huge cast but each one is well fleshed out, complex and engaging. The soundtrack is simply sensational. A PhD thesis could be written about the philosophy of the game. A couple of warnings - ignore any reviews by people who have not completed all the main endings (A to E) - you have to play the whole thing to fully appreciate this masterpiece. Also, be warned that you cannot save for about the first hour of the game and if you die you'll have to start again. If that bothers you, play it on easy until you get a chance to save and then increase the difficulty to what you want.

Strange balance. Fun ride.
In terms of the game, I've yet to finish it, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the game. It's not perfect, but for the amount I paid, I'd say it's definitely worth it. The difficulty curve is a bit steep and it I tried it on easy, just to see whwt it was like, and I'd say it became too easy, so it balances weird. The contrast between meditative calm sections and some of the most visually busy gameplay I've had is also something of note. But it's a fun ride, i hope the story has a good finish. As for the delivery service, absolutely no faults there. Arrived next day. Great value product. Undamaged.

Get the right version for your region.
Great game. Unfortunately the version sent to me was an import from the UK so none of the DLC works in my region which is the US. Make sure you buy one for your region otherwise none of the DLC will work. Other than that at start of the game there is no save options so it makes you start all over again unless you can beat the first part. If you cant make thru the first part then an easy option is to set the game to easy, then once you get past reset to normal or hard. Once your past the first part then you can activate all save functions. Visually the game is impressive for its age. You can see where Stellar Blade got its idea from. In fact Nier could have been what Stellar Blade is if they decided to make a new game which is too bad but at least some of the content is available to Stellar Blade as an addon.
