Does it come with instructions for transforming?

Yes. It comes with a detailed, full color sheet for each vehicle, which includes instructions on how to combine them into Devastator.

Can a 5 year old boy play with this or is it just a shelf piece? Will it last 4-6 months?

I guess a very mature 5yr old could. Mine son is 10 and has taken great care of it. The combiners are also fairly complicated to transform. I would guess it would be a shelf item for a few years before they could actively play.

Does it come with everything for combination

Yes all the components for transformation are incorporated into each figure. The best way to see how the whole transformation is done can be found on you tube by the user Emgo316 and look for the video about Generation Toy Gravity Builder. It's the best one to watch. The transformations for each figure is almost exactly the same.

what is the difference between this one and the yellow one?

From what I can tell it’s just a different color and I would advise not getting either set if that’s the case. The green one was extremely low quality with the plastic being very flimsy. The combined mode is basically all it can be kept in and if you wanted to use it for display than it should be fine but it isn’t suitable for play.
