Is the table 2 pieces or 4 pieces before assembling?

It comes as two pieces one for each end of the table and then each of these pieces folds in half on a hinge. The net is designed to clamp the two halves together when up.

Would this be too heavy to set on a plastic folding table?

not if its strong enough and you put it on gently . the table is quite heavy and takes a bit of knocking whilst playing , so make sure the table can take it .
