Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Love this movie

In the Summer of 1989, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids(1989) played in movie theaters while I was forced to spend time at a family member's house as my mom worked. Life threw me a bone when my mom's friend rented it on VHS and treated us all to ice cream in 1990. Local TV stations showed the film during Thanksgiving in the late 1990's. I would enjoy the film with a plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. ILM special effects artist Joe Johnston directs Honey, I Shrunk the Kids(1989). This sci-fi-family-comedy is an homage to sci-fi B movies such as The Incredible Shrinking Man and The Amazing Colossal Man. Rick Moranis plays Wayne Szalinski, an eccentric inventor who creates a machine that shrinks ojbects. Szalinski's children and two boys from next door are accidentally exposed to the shrinking ray and reduced to a 1/4 inch high! The kids struggle to get back inside the house and restored to their normal size. They're attacked by bees, scorpions, and lawnmowers. They also make friends with a baby ant. James Horner(Battle Beyond the Stars, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Krull) composed the music score for the film. Matt Frewer(Supergirl, Max Headroom) is quite good as Wayne's macho neighbor, Russ. The dog who plays Quark gives an earnest performance. The special effects are superb and they were crafted before CGI dominated Hollywood movie making. Marcia Strassman plays Wayne Szalinski's wife, Diane. She's the "honey" in the title. Amy O' Neill is lovely and charming as Wayne's daughter...Amy. Robert Oliveri is convincing as Wayne's intelligent son, Nick. He also acted in Edward Scissorhands(1990). Thomas Wilson Brown and Jared Rushton play Russ' kids. Horner's music score has an homage to Raymond Scott's Powerhouse B tune. The scene where the baby ant is killed by a scorpion is one of the most "tearjerking" scenes that I've ever seen in a movie! This film spawned two sequels, a campy TV show, and a theme park attraction called Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. It was spoofed on The Critic("Honey, I Laminated the Kids"). Honey, I Shrunk the Kids(1989) is fun and it's a Disney movie that kids and adults can enjoy.

If you're a child of the late 80's early 90's you'll remember this one! If you were an adult then you will laugh at what we thought was fashionable! lol wasn't sure my grandkids would like this but 6 yo girl and 4 yo boy were silent, wide eyed, mesmerized for the entire movie! That NEVER happens! My 6 yo granddaughter looked at me and said "that was the best movie EVER! " CLEAN comedy, which you don't find much anymore, timeless story line of fighting siblings who pull together and get along, determined to get home and realize how important their parents are to them. Funny, funny funny situations, fantastic fantasy, good examples for kids of right and wrong. Just a good clean, funny movie.

I introduced my 7 year old "Honey, I shrunk the kids" I believe when she was 5 or so. She loves it so much and keep asking to watch it over and over so decided to purchase it so that we can watch it whenever we want. We definitely do easily a dozen show times when it comes to our classic favorites, so this movie definitely joined our favorite classics!!

Classic and good watch. Well overpriced though.

Great acting and very fun film to watch with the family many times. Definitely own it.

Our six-year-old grandchild loves this movie, so we went ahead and purchased it for our movie library.

Hmm, the movie still has it but the PQ is not the best - in fact it is quite bad(LOTS of film grain[I know humans cannot shrink and hike through a 4 mile back yard but, the Film Grain is VERY THICK]). The scenes with Rick Moranis and Marcia Strassman look better(which isn't saying much). SQ is really good though, like really good - the bee scene, sprinkler scene, lawn mower scene all sound dang good. Buy it for the sound only and not the PQ. If you own the DVD then just turn up the volume during the above mentioned scenes. This movie is still VERY ENJOYABLE, though. If there is 4K Transfer for the '30th Anniversary' in 2019 I *WILL* buy it. I miss Rick Moranis in movies big time(the reason why *he* retired is sad and sweet). I don't give Disney movies anything less than 5 Stars except for 'Polyanna'(my #1 most disliked Disney movie). Buy from this seller they did everything exceptionally fantastic but, wait for a - hopefully - 30th Anniversary edition on 4K or, even Blu-ray which is not repackaged. *Edit 6/19/18: I watched a few scenes from this movie on my 55" LG 4K TV. This movie is beautiful, especially the "first-realizing-they-are-tiny" and looking up at the ceiling in the attic - that scene is so finely detailed it made we want to come back and Edit My Review. The 'film grain' scenes I mentioned above are gone and the whole movie looks so detailed with fine lines throughout - the first sign of film grain is when I 'Skipped ahead' a few chapters to see if the whole movie is this excellent? - It is! I skipped to the chapter just after Rick Moranis' character realizes what his invention has done, the scene when we are looking at the sun from the kids' point of view - film grain is pretty heavy here. I am wanting to watch this whole movie from the start again very soon(I just watched it a few days before I first wrote my first review). SQ is very weak - I compared the 'bee scene' first, the ONLY effect I can hear is Nick and Russ screaming NO buzzing of the bee, what so ever. NOTHING, just the kids screaming. Buy this copy just for the PQ alone. I am still thinking about how good it is. Oh, I own a 4K Player as well that was recently Firmware Updated with Dolby Vision and HDR, when this disc is "first recognized" by my player 'HDR' comes up on my TV. Could this movie have HDR? It said so on my TV through my player. So, maybe. Therefore, IS THERE going to be a 4K 30th Anniversary Edition after all? In the mean time, buy this disc for the PQ alone!!!
