Nice upgrade from Nix2
I bought the Nix2 many years ago and that really was a great product but I was not able to reconnect on latest attempt using. Thought I would give the Muse3 a shot as this one also tests sheen. Well, right out of the gate this did a great job in matching the exterior house color. It was not real clear in description but the app does include a bunch of free paint libraries that it looks for closest matches in. For me the main ones I am using are Behr, Valspar, Sherwin Williams, and Benjamin Moore but there are plenty of others. Just check the ones available near you when you set up app. The app and device are pretty simple to use and such a great tool to have around. As others recommend test a few different spots and find the best match that comes in first most often. Also do not trust the color shown on your phone as really hard to compare that way. It beats trying to get a sample from an old rusted fan of paint. I would highly recommend!

Astonishing value in color management for professionals
Bona Fides: I am a product designer / industrial designer with a background in cosmetic manufacturing of consumer electronics. There's a good chance you have one of the things I've helped make in your pocket or home. I spend a LOT of time managing color matches and selections as a professional. I am accustomed to using $10,000 spectrophotometers in my line of work and know how to manage my color spaces and CIELAB tolerancing. This is what I do. I also work freelance and with startups, so I need my own color tools to do my job well. For a decade I've been buying low-cost colorimeters (ColorMunki, Swatchmate Cube, etc) with the hope of finding something with acceptable performance, small size, and reasonable out of pocket costs. Color Muse is by *far* the best colorimeter I've found for the single-person user - its Delta-E is on par with any device priced below $5,000 - its a fraction the size of its competitors - it works natively in CIELAB, RGB, and HSB - it is seamlessly integrated into a wide color ecosystem (if you care, I just want a measurement tool) My previous go-to for work that didn't require (or have access to) a Konica Minolta was the X-Rite COlorMunki Design. It worked fine but was clunky, had bad desktop software, and was $400. The Color Muse has the same level of performance, is 20% the size of my Colormunki, has a better UI, is rechargable, and is 1/10th the price. Unbelievable. The software is still a touch buggy, and build quality is good but not excellent. Like all <$5K colorimeters it does poorly on specular surfaces (i.e. anodized aluminum) but that's to be expected. It's also a LOT more forgivable in a product that costs 8x lattes instead of the same price as an iPad. I have suggested this purchase to every product designer and industrial designer I know. For the price and footprint you simply cannot do better.

Good, but did not work as expected...
This is a good tool that was helpful in matching exterior paint. As others have noted, it will measure the color of paint and provide you with various numbers that are mostly helpful. As an initial test, it did a good job of correctly matching standard interior paint colors that we already knew what the color was. So far so good, but that was not what followed... Next up was matching exterior paint. This is truly a challenge as each exterior wall gets a slightly different amount of sun and, thus, fades at a different rate. Unfortunately, there were no removable parts on the exterior of our house that matched the fade level of a small area that needed touch up. Hence the need for the Color Muse. After making a half dozen or so measurements--each area of knock-down textured stucco gave a slightly different reading--I was off to the paint store. I was shocked to find that paint stores are not able to take the raw data from the Color Muse and do an exact match. Rather, they are only able to take one of the app's recommended "near match" colors as starting point. It took two trips to the paint store and about 2 hours of a very patient employee's time tweaking and tuning to get a good match. The process is tedious. We started with the closest match, then ran a quart, painted a small area, then used the Color Muse app's inspect function to compare a sample to the readings from my exterior wall. The app does a decent job of indicating how good the match is, but take this number with a grain of salt. Next, the paint store employee would take his best guess as to which of the four tints in his system would best tweak the color and run another sample, paint an area, let it dry (used a heat gun to speed it up), than back to the Color Muse app to compare. Since I had several readings from my exterior wall, we dinked around with the formulation until the delta E was between 1.0 and 1.3 compared to all of my readings. The match ended up being quite good. Not perfect and not as good as some interior matches I have done with pieces of trim and painted drywall using the paint store's color measuring equipment, but it was much better than I feared once I comprehended the inherent limitations of this tool. If you have interior paint that you want to match, you are better off taking a small piece of drywall or trim to the paint store to get a match. The paint store's spectrophotometer will give you a much better match in only one or two attempts as the paint store's equipment will give an precise formulation even it is not one of the standard colors sold at the store thereby avoiding the Color Muse paint tweaking guessing game.

Doesn't work
Bought this specifically because they say it can accurately guess the sheen....it can't. I've tried many times on many different paints and sheens, and this thing doesn't even get close to guessing right. Dont buy this

Good product but...
Pros: The product works pretty good. It wonโt tell you the sheen of the paint. I had 5 samples matched to the recommendations. 1 was spot on- exact match. The others were close but too light of a shade so I have to keep getting the samples darkened but it is much easier than starting from scratch. It also matched the paint that I had names for so that shows how accurate the product is. It will pull up a whole list of possible options so just know itโs not an exact thing. Cons: I wrote a review about getting a used product sold as new and they denied my review. It did not use an bad language or meet the criteria to not be published. I just wanted to warn others that maybe they should watch out for used products that arenโt reduced in price. Iโd keep it for a used price.

Awesome tool!
We have a small painting business and color matching used to mean getting out several fan decks to try and find the best match. This little gem does it with an app and seems to do it with an amazing level of accuracy. It was easy to download and install the app. You don't have to give any personal information if you don't want to but if you want it to remember your matches, you have to play ball. Sampling colors from a number of areas is always a good idea, but we have found that this device pretty much nails the color and sheen as long as the sample area is clean. This is saving us a ton of paint on touch ups and blends. We can now confidently make a repair without having to run out entire walls or ceilings. We have had basically 100% success with this on probably 50 different colors so far. For the price, this is completely worth it. Basically the cost of 2 or 3 gallons of premium paint, if you get one mistint because you didn't guess right, this thing pays for itself. Supposedly, the company has partnered with Sherwin-Williams. There are versions of this device that have been branded for Sherwin-Williams and are pre loaded with the Sherwin Williams ENTIRE color palette. From what I have heard, they will be available from Sherwin-Williams for about $30 more than you can find them on Amazon. Not sure if it will be worth it, as the standard palette of Sherwin-Williams colors already on the app seems to do just fine. If I had to guess, ColorMuse will probably try and partner with all the big brands and do the same. If you are a painter or designer, you need one of these. Super handy.

Exactly what I needed!
We purchased a midcentury home last year, and the last owner chose a fantastic paint scheme when he renovated 19 years ago. It works perfectly with the home's character. However, he passed away and left only a few paint cans in the garage. And with some nicks and chips throughout, it's time for some touch up paint. After much (unsuccessful) trial and error of bringing home paint samples from the color deck, or breaking off a chunk of the molding to get a color match at the store, I finally broke down and researched to see if there was an app for color matching. I found Color Muse along with some other options, and this one seemed like the best fit for my needs at the most reasonable price. Color Muse arrived, I plugged it in for a couple hours, downloaded the app, and spent all of 45 seconds setting it up. The app was intuitive, and I was scanning every paint surface in my home within minutes. It was cathartic to confirm that the trim in the dining room was actually a couple shades lighter than the trim in the living room, even though they look identical. That's why i was having such an impossible time bringing home samples from the paint store. As mentioned, the previous owner left behind a couple paint cans in the garage, and the Color Muse was able to confirm where those paints were used -- in each case, the name on the paint can was among the top three best matches provided by Color Muse. That's pretty accurate. Although 19 years of time has faded and altered the paint slightly, so that there are variations from room to room, the Color Muse was pretty consistent in recommending 1 or 2 paint choices among its three best matches for any given room in my house. So, for example, for all the trim in our great room, I checked about 7 different spots and triangulated based on what was showing up in the top three list most consistently. Bought that paint at SW, and it is a PERFECT match. Super happy I spent this little amount of money for something that has been a great tool for me.

Perfect match of printed NCS1950 samples
It's is amazing product I have tested about 30 randomly chosen samples from the printed NSC Index 1950 and the Color Muse device did not do a single mistake! I have no time and motivation to test all 1950 samples but it is highly probable that the device will be pretty accurate for all NCS samples. Needless to say that I used the original NCS Colourpin app which is compatible with Color Muse and shows directly NCS matches. (Color Muse and ColourPin hardware must be very similar or identical.)
