Why does it say expired 2017?

It seems that the expiry date could also be indicative of the manufacturing date. But again, this is a specialist Peranakan food item that gets better with age. Just remember to lightly toast it in slices before food prep.

Is there an expiry date? How come it says expires 12/22/2017 on features & details?

The blocks of shrimp paste belachan I’d purchased about a month have varying expiry dates too. One expires 07/15/22 and the other expires 12/15/21. This is a staple food in my Peranakan family’s diet as with all other such families of this culture. I’m not concerned about the expiry date as the quality of this particular food item gets better with age. If it’s kept refrigerated, it can last for as long as 8 years although, it will probably be consumed in much lesser time than that. It’s used as a condiment mixed with chillie peppers and lime juice. It’s also used as a base for some really spicy dishes. The shrimp that’s in the belachan is already preserved before converting into belachan. Personally, the expiration date is a formality. It tastes better with age.

Bitter after taste

The belacan is too strong, as in, it has a really bitter after taste. I was making sambal nasi lemak, & the belacan just overpowered the taste of the sambal, even though on my second try, I reduced the belacan quantity from the recipe.
