I've never used achiote paste before. How long will this keep after opening? and how should I store it?

My grandmother told me to use unrefrigerated paste, powder or seeds only 6 months. After that the taste diminishes and you then have to use double. But if you refrigerate it well it should keep for years. If you have it in oil, it should be refrigerated lest the oil goes rancid.
