What is the pocket under the carrier for?

You can take out all 3 wires from the 2 side and bottom pockets. Then the whole carrier could be washable without the wires. Is this awkward to carry with cat inside?

It is a little awkward with a heavier cat. I use it to take kittens to the vet. I use a plastic carrier for my full grown cats.
