Can these be stacked? If so, how much weight can you place on top?

Yes you can stack. I have them 3 high with no problem. (like the picture) Each one has 12 plates in them.

Do these offer enough protection for moving china?

If you move just china in your own car, being very careful, then yes, they are protective enough ( I have done that), and plates have to be stacked with felt dividers between them, though. I would also make sure there is no space inside containers for shifting, stuff some tissue paper all around for extra protection. Crystal glasses I have actually bubble wrapped before putting them inside the container and then placed the container inside a blanket in the car and secured it. Glasses made it safely, nothing cracked. Hoowever, if you move china in a truck with other items and much bumping, then you'll need something more substantial and protective, like bubble wraps, solid hard boxes, etc.

Does the smallest box have a solid bottom like the rest of the boxes do?

Yes, it does.....I’ve been very happy with this set of storage boxes.

Is this set of 4 the same grey color as "grey twill" large box (11x15") & "grey twill" hard shell mug/cup organizer? these photos look beige.

Same color or darn close. Not beige at all.
