Mike Oldfield is undoubtedly a unique artist. In his 37 year career, he produced timeless, extraordinary and inspiring music that fascinates fans around the globe. It has been exactly 35 years since the opening passage of his legendary album Tubular Bells was used in the cult film The Exorcist and made this long player an international success. This masterpiece of 1973 has now been technically revised by Mike Oldfield in his house on the Bahamas and provides a new listening experience in the new 2009 stereo mix. Review: The Perfect Album Improved! - It's hard to believe what an impact this album had on the music loving public of 1973. It was totally different to anything we were used to and even Richard Branson, whose Virgin Records would release it, wasn't sure about it. I bought the album back then and got the cd version when it became available. It's my go to album and never fails to make me feel better and if you're new to Mike Oldfield this is the perfect place for you to start. This remastered version is excellent. It has a much cleaner sound and brightens up the instruments making every one of them perform at their best. The included booklet provides an excellent background to the making of the album which in 1973 was very challenging. At £4.99 it's a real bargain so turn the lights off and the music up and enjoy! Review: Ring them changes - I have this on vinyl but I never play vinyl nowadays. I had it on CD but my copy got permanently damaged. So I had to buy it again. That indicates just how essential this album is. The first of its kind; if you have never listened to anything by Mike Oldfield this is the best starting point, and it comes with a couple of bonus tracks. (A shame he couldn't include too the Bonzo Dog Band's Intro and the Outro [and if you don't understand the connection listen to them both and have a laugh]). But beware: you might get hooked and there are two dozen more albums to buy since this first one, all worth a listen, but a proper sequel to it, and even more enjoyable once you have Tubular Bells (I), is Tubular Bells II: listen out on that for the very funny reprise caveman track.

PURPLE HAZE
Blimey i can only imagine what listening to Tubular Bells was like at the time,i wasn't born till 79.Images of laying on an extremely comfortable bean bag, headphones on,vinyl seductively turning as a mass of pungent smoke emitts from a jazz cigarette abounds.Alternatively i imagine a circle of cool students with flairs and long hair, vinyl and the same unmistakable aroma. Tubular Bells is an ALBUM.A journey into {coughs....trail of smoke}the cosmos of the interior space of your mind.Man.Far out. How strange to look back as listening to an album as a quaint pursuit, but this is what your mums and dads did. Nowadays as we know with everything being reduced to a switch of a button, ipods, ipads, iphones, itunes the album as a form is drowning along with the physical act of reading books, introspection, empathy, possesions being Ikead....culture smells like warm bag of garbage.... So with relish i turned my bedroom lights off,put the headphones and put my Tubular Bells cd on.And it ruled. From the inimitable opening bars to acoustic detours its brilliant stuff. This Mike Oldfield chap certainly must've inhabited a vivid artistic netherworld whilst recording. Tubular Bells reminded me of the relaxing nature of music,i had to chuckle as i heard pan pipes. You see i thought i would never listen to something with pan pipes....but you get older, chubbier.Life changes. As an album correct me if i am wrong this surely invented "ambient" music or chill out,i view it in many ways as a formative dance record. The album ebbs and flows, you know i don't know if Oldfield is considered cool but in my books he is. When my daughter grows older i will sit her down..and play Tubular Bells. Then give a lecture on the importance of The Album.I am sure she will enjoy it. In the meantime i shall recoil from the horrors of the modern world.......

The original classic album
I 1st heard this legendary album at my uncle's house. He was a huge Mike Oldfield fan but, being very young, I couldn't figure out why he would buy an LP with just 2 songs on it. He played it & I was completely blown away by it. I used to have a HDCD remastered copy of this album but, frankly speaking, this pre-remastered CD version is a million times better. The dynamic range is much more natural & many of the instruments (especially the glockenspiel) are startlingly clear despite being recorded over 50 years ago !. Definitely recommended

Remember how you felt
Do you remember how you felt when you started listening to Tubular Bells? Not only was the music, new, fresh and exciting, you connected to that sound in a way that made you feel like that, too. This remix captures that magic that the original vinyl album generated. Magic that was lost in the first CD. It was as though you were simply connected to your emotions by way of a window. Yes, you could hear the music, you could even remember it, but you were no longer moved by it. Just 'age', I guess. Not any more! This new release awakens those old feelings. The musical differences are minimal and not intrusive. They even help the in places. If you've never understood what all the fuss was about with Tubular Bells, give this a listen. People who are too young to remember the melodies or the unfortunate movie connotations are thrilled by the scope and breadth just as we were all those years ago. It's not about recapturing your youth and who you were, it's about who you are now.

Gorgeous!
Mike's remaster from the original multitracks is nothing short of magical! The song will always be hypnotic but this updated mix is cleaner, stronger and more enjoyable. The original release had some low frequency noise that was impossible to remove. This digital remix gives us Tubular Bells as it was meant to be heard! Instruments come through cleaner, stronger and louder! Tape hiss and other artifacts we've been used to are gone! My only issue is that I waited to pick this up, but that was entirely my own fault as I did not know it existed! Any fan of this album should treat themselves to this sonic wonderland as soon as possible, and hear it again like it was brand new.

Disco storico.
