No quality issues on this one
I bought this in spite of the previous poor reviews. I'm not disappointed at all. In my experience you'll get more than your moneys worth with this sharpener. There is a learning curve, but spend some time with it and you'll be producing great bevels and extremely sharp edges. In my opinion you would have to spend a couple of hundred dollars for an Edge Pro or a Wicked Edge to to get the kind of an edge you can produce on the Schrade. Both of the aforementioned machines are better designed and better quality but that comes at a pretty steep price. Catch the sharpening videos on you tube and you will learn a lot. Good luck.....

NOT a sharpening system
While it can be a valuable addition to your sharpening tool collection, you should know going in that it's not really a knife sharpening system. That is, unless your knives are only sharpened on one side. The Schrade Advant Edge knife sharpening system is a strange hybrid, a cross between a Lansky style clamp system and the Edge Pro sharpening system. The problem is that unlike a Lansky system, you can't turn the knife over to alternate sharpening strokes from each side. It's not like an Edge Pro either, in that the blade can't be moved to keep the blade in the correct position. Naturally, you can open the clamp to turn the knife over, but since you'll never be able to reposition it precisely enough, you lose most of the advantage of using a sharpening system. What it IS good for, is truing up the edge grind on a knife. The Schrade system allows for precise edge shaping on one side at a time, and works better than most sharpeners on small or narrow blades. It's just that after doing the preliminary work on the Schrade, you'll be better off if you have another sharpener to use to actually put an edge on the knife. Unlike other reviewers, I had no problem with the tightening bolts. Just remember, they're designed to hold the blade snugly, not in a vise like grip. Tighten them like a gorilla, and you'll just ruin them. My set arrived with a full bottle of honing oil included.

Won't even trust it to sharpen a nail clipper!!!
Well where do I begin to tell y'all how bad this kit is. Don't get me wrong I have older kits from Scharade that work a helluva lot better than this little jewel. This kit is tinny not made to sharpen anything bigger than a nail clipper (a bit of an exaggeration but I wouldn't even trust it to sharpen a nail clipper). I read about the stones coming off the bases if overtightened, I placed special care not to do so, and when I installed the coarse stone on it, I watched it bow out with the slightest of adjustments. Also, there's no info in the kit that says what angle pertain to any marks. Btw that bar with the angle marks didn't fit right at all, the sliding piece not only couldn't be adjusted tight enough to hold the stones without bowing out or without falling out of it, but also, too tight to slide in and out to effortlessly sharpen any knife. Now let's talk about the base... Jesus! Whomever designed this is an idiot, I have a Benchmade pocket knife and this thing tips over easily, the grip on the knife holder is crappy at best and if any tighter it'll scratch your blade. Sure there are things that could be done to prevent all this, but for that I'd buy the slightly more expensive kit and have to do nothing at all but sharpen the hell out of a blade. I could keep going on and on about how bad this kit is, but "ain't nobody got time fo'dat!!" So people, trust me on this one... This kit is a PASS!!! Get the AGPtek professional kit works F$&@ing great!!

Does the job but design flaws--and NO INSTRUCTIONS
First of all, there are absolutely no instructions with this thing. Why would you put out a product and have no instructions? The only literature that comes with it is pictures of assembly. It's a solid piece of equipment and does the job, but there are a few flaws: You need a screwdriver to move the knife guide. Why isn't there a thumb screw? Also it really needs to be attached to some kind of base or at least needs suction cups. It has to be held down with your free hand while sharpening. Not terrible, but it would work better with a solid footing. I did my whole collection today and it works great once you establish the proper angle for each knife. That part is great. The rest? Not so much. Schrader, why don't you have instructions with your sharpening system? Even online or SOMEWHERE!?

Pretty good for the $$$
Good product for the $$$. I'd give it a solid B/B+ all around. Build quality is good for the price range, and it comes with a decent selection of stones + oil. Only major flaws are: no degree markings on segmented steel rod, and the clamping mechanism requires knife removal to switch sides. These two flaws create some inconsistency when trying to match the angle on both sides. Additionally, the clamping mechanism limits the size of the knife that can be sharpened. Overall I would recommend this product to someone who has a solid understanding of the mechanics of a knife edge & sharpening blades but is also looking for a budget tool. If you are: careful when clamping the blade, orient the blade based on some established reference points on the blade surface, and position the blade so that the the arc of the sharpening arm matches any curvature of the blade, you can achieve some pretty good results with this tool.

Just what I needed!
First off for a $30.00 sharpening kit this is is way better than I thought it would be. The quality is very good. The angles aren't marked because the angles would change depending on the depth of the blade. The directions for assembly were easy enough to follow. If you need directions on how to sharpen a blade, go to YouTube. Putting a hair shaving sharp edge was easy enough with a little patience. The clamp worked perfectly on everything from my 2 inch pocket knife to my 9 inch Bowie. If you can't sharpen a knife with this kit, maybe you should just let someone else sharpen your knives. I could buy 8 of these for the price of one Edge Pro Apex 4 Knife Sharpener . I couldn't recommend this enough.

Spend your money on the Edge Pro, or Edge Pro Apex. It has been the best system I have ever used. If you sharpen scissors, get the Pro. Otherwise buy the Apex, with a progression of finer tapes. Your edges will have a fine (mirror) polish, and the symmetry of the sharpened edge results in superior slicing capability. Asymmetric edges, as you would want in handing biased edges (Japanese kitchen knives) are a little more time consuming, but the results are undeniable.
