Update: I’ve been able to use this scanner a bit now and it has impressed me quite a bit. The screen is clear and bright, touch controls are responsive and navigating menus is a breeze. Outside of Amazon sending me a used and returned unit it has performed flawlessly. It pulls up codes pretty quickly, though it takes a bit to scan through the different modules, and the live data is butter smooth and updates very quickly. This scanner easily rivals my old Snap-On scanner, the Solus Pro, which cost thousands of dollars when I bought it about 10 years ago. So why buy this scanner if I have a pro grade scanner? Pretty simple: rechargeable battery, smaller and more compact size, and free updates! Honestly, I’m very satisfied with this scanner. It’s updated twice in the past week and they haven’t cost me a dime. Good luck getting that kind of service with something like my Solus Pro. Those updates still cost hundreds of dollars. Another reason I like this scanner? Customer service. An XTOOL rep saw my initial review and reached out to me about it. We have gone back and forth a bit in the past week and they are going to try to make it right even though it was a failing on Amazons part. Where are you getting this kind of service anywhere else? As a former career mechanic, I highly recommend this scanner or any of their other scanners. You should also know that this scanner will recharge off of the vehicles OBD2 port while it’s plugged in, so you don’t have to worry about the battery dying as you’re diagnosing the vehicle or having an extra charging cable running to the scanner. That’s fantastic for viewing live data as someone else drives the vehicle. Initial review: I received a previously used scanner. It was registered to Herman, though he was probably not the Munster. I also have their WiFi network information and everything else they put into this scanner. I’m not sure why they returned it after using it on 2-28-25 on an Infiniti, but they did. While I am marking this review at 3 stars, I understand that it is unlikely an issue with the seller. I did delete the previous user and then updated the scanner, it took a while since it needed a system update and 41 module updates, but it went pretty quickly. You should know that in the “update” menu there is an update all button, but it is only labeled “updates”. I had started to update them individually before I pressed it, not knowing what it would do. Did you expect me to read the instructions? I’m not sure if I should return this or just complain to Amazon or the seller, see what they know about this, but I do need a scanner and so far this is pretty quick to navigate the different menus and should perform well. So far I haven’t used it, but I will at least give it a shot before I do anything else. It does seem well made.

Purchased the XTOOL D5S in April 2026 and have used it on multiple vehicles. Wanted a tablet style scan tool to have along with my XTOOL A30M wireless dongle which has been excellent. Both have free updates which which is admirable. Very impressed with how fast and user friendly the D5S is. Recently used it to scan, diagnose and clear misfire codes on a Kia Sorento. Using live engine data there were 147 lines of information to help with diagnosis! Another notable vehicle is a Jeep Grand Cherokee that uses FCA Autoauth Secure Gateway. Was able to access and clear codes without login or an Autoauth account. When prompted to login cancel out and proceed to check codes. Xtool has been great at answering questions through email over the years. Usually get a reply next day. Seems that they appreciate getting feedback from customers and use it to help improve diagnostics. Definitely recommend the D5S.

So far it worked for my 2008 Dodge ram 1500 big horn, it printed out a faulty high pressure sensor for my AC when I have been driving for 4 years without it. It works great for my other car a 2020 Nissan Murano. They are very fast with responding to emails for questions and most of all very friendly. I would to try their other products because so far the D5S is just awesome. By far the best coder I have ever bought. First a heads up, when you first start up the device you will need to select your language, then connect the Internet then update. You don't need to update everything just update the vehicle you are going to connect to otherwise I figured it might bog it down a bit. I was able to get it up and going after I fully charged in less than a hour. After that hour I got more direct codes that I needed know what I needed to work on. This is a major plus because my other reader just gives me a code with hints at five possible that could cause the trouble code. This xtool d5s so far is saving me money. Instead of me buying replacement parts I don't need, I can buy only what I need. Save money for things what you really need. Their website has all of the instructions that you need. The entire device feels solid with rubber like material just in case if you drop it then it can help cushion the fall. Lightweight so you can carry it in a bag with no trouble. Also the device is very responsive and it feels really good in my hands. Other readers feel like cheap toys compared this reader for sure.

I really, REALLY, did NOT want to purchase this scanner. I'm a former professional auto technician and ASE Certified Master Technician. And while I no longer make my living as an auto tech, I still work on cars, a lot, as a hobby and for friends and family. I don't need a fancy or expensive scanner, just something to pull the codes and, maybe, provide live data. I've been getting along just fine with the Ancel FX2000 i purchased on Amazon several years ago. But i recently picked up a car that required extensive engine service and had been sitting for several years. After the mechanical engine repairs were completed, the check engine light came on, with code P0315, "Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned". i attempted driving the car for several weeks, hoping the Engine Control Unit (ECU) would re-learn the crankshaft position sensor, but no matter how much I drove the car, the code persisted. It became clear I needed to either take it to the dealer or a mechanic, and pay them to perform the Crankshaft Position Relearn procedure, or buy a scanner with the needed capability and do it myself. As an avowed DIYer, I decided to purchase the XTool D5S, primarily because it was the lowest price scanner with relearn functions that I could find. It arrived the next day, and I charged it just enough to get it to power up. It uses a touchscreen interface, which is nice, and the menus are easily navigable, with virtually no Chinese-lish. It does require a Wi-Fi connection and setting up an "account" with XTools before allowing use of the diagnostic functions. Within minutes of connecting the scanner to the car, I performed the Crankshaft Variation Relearn procedure and the check engine light was off. The ECU was finally happy. Overall, it's a very nice unit, of good quality and price that I'm sure will last many years. So, solid four stars; would have been five but for the required WiFi setup and on-line registration which, in my opinion, should not really be necessary.

This company has left a sour taste in my mouth. First and foremost I bought a new product..... I was sent a used product that wasn't even wiped from the previous user. No manuals or nothing, the box itself was in bad shape and it wasn't from shipping because it was inside an Amazon box. The cable was missing so I couldn't even attempt to do a diagnostic. XTOOL didn't even take the time to see what was in the box (obviously a return) but sent it back out. Somebody else thought it was trash before me and I'll follow suit. If they're not willing to even try on the first go round I won't risk it twice.

This product is exceptionally well made, sturdy, and packaged well. It came to me in a couple of days. The seller was especially helpful even before the purchase. I emailed them with some questions and Carina got back to me promptly, resulting in my purchasing the product. This is an extremely capable tool that will work for every vehicle brand listed—which is every brand USA & International. It has a fast response to the menus, a screen that is bright and adjustable, with easy to follow menus. Although I have Toyota vehicles it has literally every worldwide brand capabilities. It easily identified my vehicles. I particularly wanted it to accurately measure transmission temperature in a sealed Toyota transmission as part of the drain and fill procedure—BTW this is common now on all sealed Aisin transmissions w/o dipsticks in most Toyota vehicles and almost all other similar transmissions. It came to me nearly fully charged, and worked flawlessly when connected to either of my vehicles, a 2014 Toyota Sienna, and a 2003 Avalon. For the price this is a very capable DYI tool that goes way beyond my expectations. The live data showed me everything happening on the vehicle including ATF temperature on the 2014. Like everything else today OBDII and vehicle functions are extensive and complicated, so I expect I'll be using some AI questions to learn more about my vehicle functions, but this tool will become THE one for me to use, and to learn more to DYI, my favorite thing to do.

I have 4 nissans a 2013 Pathfinder 4x4 was the only I needed it for. Immediately you have to create an account and update. It was pretty fast though. It read all my codes right away, including some I couldn't get with a cheap Bluetooth scanner. However, only about 1/3 of the service resets work, you continually get function not supported for most. Then, it stopped working at all. It said function not supported for anything including auto scan. I tried, everything and then did a factory reset. This worked for another day until the same thing happened again. It definitely is buggy. However, it's hard to find a scanner at this price point that does what this one does..even with the issues. There is a workaround if this happens..scanning and most diagnosing can be done by clicking odb2 button and then auto scan..instead of scanning by your specific vehicle. I'm torn between keeping it or sending it back. Things like the steering wheel calibrate and trans gear relearn worked. I needed it for injector coding and abs bleed, those did not. Bottom line, unless you are willing to pay more, you probably aren't getting something more widely compatible with advanced features..just don't expect everything to work perfect or all the time.
