I own vehicles from a wide range of years and needed a scanner to cover late 90’s OBD II systems. I reached out to Xtool to see if the D5S scanner would perform a Crankshaft Sensor Relearn on my ‘98 Chevy truck, and they were able to confirm it would after being provided with the VIN. I set up the scanner and updated the software before connecting it to any vehicles. Updates were relatively fast and connecting to my Wi-Fi was simple; I opted to update all but you can select specific brands if you're in a rush to get started. While the AutoVIN feature did not work on the older OBD II system in the ‘98, this was not a surprise. Manually entering the VIN is straightforward and ensures the scanner grants access to the correct functions. I quickly performed the crankshaft sensor relearn procedure by following the on-screen prompts. The D5S's processor speed is excellent, surpassing the Launch scanner I had been using. Lag is minimal while the scanner is working, and it quickly and correctly pulled codes from the truck. It’s overall smaller and lighter than the aforementioned scanner, but still has a nice, rugged casing to keep it protected. When I connected the D5S to my ’22 Honda, the AutoVIN feature worked immediately, and it detected my ’05 Mustang just as quickly. On both vehicles, I accessed diagnostics and live data swiftly. This scanner provides more information than most people need, but for DIY enthusiasts like me, it is a valuable tool for diagnosing multiple systems. Some of the special functions included on this scanner are paid items on others, and the free lifetime software updates give me confidence that this will be a part of my tool arsenal for a long time.

I really, REALLY, did NOT want to purchase this scanner. I'm a former professional auto technician and ASE Certified Master Technician. And while I no longer make my living as an auto tech, I still work on cars, a lot, as a hobby and for friends and family. I don't need a fancy or expensive scanner, just something to pull the codes and, maybe, provide live data. I've been getting along just fine with the Ancel FX2000 i purchased on Amazon several years ago. But i recently picked up a car that required extensive engine service and had been sitting for several years. After the mechanical engine repairs were completed, the check engine light came on, with code P0315, "Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned". i attempted driving the car for several weeks, hoping the Engine Control Unit (ECU) would re-learn the crankshaft position sensor, but no matter how much I drove the car, the code persisted. It became clear I needed to either take it to the dealer or a mechanic, and pay them to perform the Crankshaft Position Relearn procedure, or buy a scanner with the needed capability and do it myself. As an avowed DIYer, I decided to purchase the XTool D5S, primarily because it was the lowest price scanner with relearn functions that I could find. It arrived the next day, and I charged it just enough to get it to power up. It uses a touchscreen interface, which is nice, and the menus are easily navigable, with virtually no Chinese-lish. It does require a Wi-Fi connection and setting up an "account" with XTools before allowing use of the diagnostic functions. Within minutes of connecting the scanner to the car, I performed the Crankshaft Variation Relearn procedure and the check engine light was off. The ECU was finally happy. Overall, it's a very nice unit, of good quality and price that I'm sure will last many years. So, solid four stars; would have been five but for the required WiFi setup and on-line registration which, in my opinion, should not really be necessary.

DUDE I'M SO ANNOYED BY THIS "SCANNER" AS IT DOES **NOT** WORK FOR MY SUBARU. I tried the VIN, updates, manual input, auto input, this, that and everything in between. I got it for ONE REASON - read the transmission temperature on a 2015 Subaru Legacy Premium. It has all these WEIRD, RANDOM vehicles, but guess what it doesn't have? SUBARU. What I did get after literally an HOUR of tinkering was a VERY LIMITED amount of info/live data. My husband was tired yesterday when changing my oil, and accidentally drained the trans fluid. We spent 400 bucks on Amazon for things needed to refill it, including THIS just to check the temp to do the run cycle. I ended up using science/ambient temp to guess because it's basically a non bidirectional code reader for a Subaru. Yet, YOU GET PONTIAC AND SATURN... LITERALLY SATURN. I have nothing against them, but they went out of business over 15 years ago. The major makes and models are missing, unless American, which is a problem because all the startup operations aren't available. You gotta backdoor everything. It's a code reader for 2010. It's incredibly overpriced. My free Temu gift does more. I'm also unsure if it's even FREE. It had some thing at the upper left hand corner saying "trial," as if beyond a certain date, you'd be required to get a subscription to continue using the device. No matter what I tried to do to connect, it kept throwing errors - whether it can't connect, has no connection, car isn't on, not supported, or whatever. It did say I needed an update for my car, and there was a list (w/90+ updates), of which ONE pertained to Subaru. I haven't a clue WHICH Subaru because after downloading, it's not like it helped anything. The rest of the very long list of updates literally tell you the cars for which the updates are for, and so you can skip through them. However, because it doesn't actually work with my vehicle, ZERO of the main display functions pertain to me. I must backdoor my way into a tiny list of what I get to look at or even do. Trying to even determine which of the menus I needed to be in was a pain, too, as most are coded to random letters/numbers versus 2015 Legacy or 2020 Outback. I had to try them all to get to my limited list of backdoor functions. This is super frustrating for me as I'm left returning it, and Amazon is getting to a place where returns can be an issue. So, it's a scary place to be... having a nearly $200 item that doesn't serve any purpose. I swear I googled literally all of the under $200 bidirectional units on here. I actually settled for this one because of all the reviews proclaiming it's compatibility for my make and model, and I'm not talking Amazon - I did as deep of a dive as one could on the internet in the time frame I had left to order it for next day delivery. I used search and AI. I even independently compared functions between brands, and tried to avoid getting a product that wouldn't work. I'm shocked that it's more than other units, but serves a rather obscure set of vehicles out of the box. I mean Saturn? OVER SUBARU?! If you have a GMC or Chevy... basically any American made car, it might work. IDK. ANYTHING FOREIGN MIGHT BE A COMPLETE WASTE OF YOUR TIME.

Update: I’ve been able to use this scanner a bit now and it has impressed me quite a bit. The screen is clear and bright, touch controls are responsive and navigating menus is a breeze. Outside of Amazon sending me a used and returned unit it has performed flawlessly. It pulls up codes pretty quickly, though it takes a bit to scan through the different modules, and the live data is butter smooth and updates very quickly. This scanner easily rivals my old Snap-On scanner, the Solus Pro, which cost thousands of dollars when I bought it about 10 years ago. So why buy this scanner if I have a pro grade scanner? Pretty simple: rechargeable battery, smaller and more compact size, and free updates! Honestly, I’m very satisfied with this scanner. It’s updated twice in the past week and they haven’t cost me a dime. Good luck getting that kind of service with something like my Solus Pro. Those updates still cost hundreds of dollars. Another reason I like this scanner? Customer service. An XTOOL rep saw my initial review and reached out to me about it. We have gone back and forth a bit in the past week and they are going to try to make it right even though it was a failing on Amazons part. Where are you getting this kind of service anywhere else? As a former career mechanic, I highly recommend this scanner or any of their other scanners. You should also know that this scanner will recharge off of the vehicles OBD2 port while it’s plugged in, so you don’t have to worry about the battery dying as you’re diagnosing the vehicle or having an extra charging cable running to the scanner. That’s fantastic for viewing live data as someone else drives the vehicle. Initial review: I received a previously used scanner. It was registered to Herman, though he was probably not the Munster. I also have their WiFi network information and everything else they put into this scanner. I’m not sure why they returned it after using it on 2-28-25 on an Infiniti, but they did. While I am marking this review at 3 stars, I understand that it is unlikely an issue with the seller. I did delete the previous user and then updated the scanner, it took a while since it needed a system update and 41 module updates, but it went pretty quickly. You should know that in the “update” menu there is an update all button, but it is only labeled “updates”. I had started to update them individually before I pressed it, not knowing what it would do. Did you expect me to read the instructions? I’m not sure if I should return this or just complain to Amazon or the seller, see what they know about this, but I do need a scanner and so far this is pretty quick to navigate the different menus and should perform well. So far I haven’t used it, but I will at least give it a shot before I do anything else. It does seem well made.

One of the Honda's I own had an aftermarket starter put in a couple years back, and it worked fine for a while. However, it became hard to start occasionally and threw a P0339 check engine code (crankshaft position sensor circuit intermittent). It turns out the cranking motion by the aftermarket starter was not within Honda ECU's spec, and after an OEM starter was installed as a DIY project, it needed a crankshaft position relearn to complete the job. The typical low end $50 range OBD2 scanner on the market cannot perform such a relearn, and I needed to either take the car to a local repair shop or buy an expensive bidirectional OBD2 scanner costing upwards of several hundred dollars myself for such a simple, 2 minute tops procedure. This D5S OBD2 by XTOOL fills the price range gap and fit in nicely for what I needed as it has the CPK relearn function. I saved quite a bit by buying an OEM Honda starter online and installed it myself, enough to buy a couple of this devices, and I can definitely use such a handy tool later on. The unit is a nicely built and felt sturdy in my hands. The touch screen menu design is intuitive and straight forward to navigate and I was up and running in a few minutes. I included a screenshot and the menu list of its Special Functions. I do wish, however, the power button is recessed so I would not accidentally turning it on when grabbing the device with my right hand (the power button is on top towards the right hand side). This, however, is not a major flaw. Just a suggestion for future improvement if XTOOL reads this review. This device is not intended for a professional car mechanic, but a very good tool to have for amateur DIY mechanic like myself. Even if you don't want to get your hands dirty by doing the repair yourself, the knowledge you can gain by having such a device is worth it, as the saying goes, knowledge is power!

Seems to be a great reader, but it was not compatible with my car/model for the function I needed. It listed it could perform cam and crank relearning, and listed it was compatible with my car, but that function listed as unavailable when I tried. Also tried ABS auto bleed on my Honda and had the same issue. No issues other than some functional transparency.
