Review: Gripping and much more captivating than the movie - I remember as a child watching Jurassic park with my dad and being terrified at the sight of a Velociraptor opening a door. Switch to a few years down the line and the Lost World smashed onto movie screens, I found it exciting and scary in equal measure. I'm now 27 and having recently seen Jurassic world which reignited my love for the franchise and to which I found it excellent after the poor showing of Jurassic park 3. However, none of those movies compare to the pure thrill of reliving every detail of life on those islands as if I was there myself. I bought the original Jurassic park book 2 weeks ago I was stunned by how much more detail and character development was in it and how much was lost translating the story to film. The same shock came after reading the Lost World, Michael Crichton's descriptive writing is exceptional. It allows you to completely immerse yourself in the story and follow it almost like you were there yourself. The in depth story and descriptive nature really brought back all of the wonder and terror that captivated me all those years ago sat next to my dad watching Jurassic park. If you've seen the movies then I suggest you read the books, so much was left out during filming and editing and in fact if some more of what is in the books was taken over to the films they would've been even better than they were. Review: A good read - This is a great book but not as great as Jurassic park. The story took a really long time to get going, but once it did it was a decent read.

Gripping and much more captivating than the movie

A delight, 5 stars!
Having enjoyed Jurassic Park I was eager to dive into this one and wow, this was equally as thrilling as book one. This author is an absolute master of raising your anxiety and creating tension you feel you can touch. This book is fantastic in so many ways. It gets right under your skin and it's frightening but equally it's making you think about science, the planet, our existence. Ian Malcolm goes down as an unforgettable character for me. What a legend. And while there was traces of it in book one, this book has amazing females characters. I've many complaints regarding male authors and their female characters but credit where its due, Crichton nails it. There's no damsels in distress here. I hope teen girls are picking this book up and being inspired by the confident inspirational females in this book. This duology was a delight. I've no idea why I waited so long to read it. Five stars.

Book over movie
This book is so much better than the movie version. As a book the story line (different to that of the film) is more enjoyable. The characters are more believable on paper ; with even a few that weren't used in the film. I enjoyed the mix of science and adventure in the book, there is no T-rex on the streets of San fransico. This a great follow-up to Jurassic Park (which better be released on kindle soon) When i went to see this at its movie release after reading the book several times already i was disgusted how much it was changed. As Ian Malcolm I find Jeff Goldblum annoying, Didn' t see the point in Vince Vaughan's character who isn't in the book and the girl Kelly, who was suppose to be Malcolm's daughter WTF. Do yourself a favour read the book ignore the film.

An Engaging, Yet Flawed Adventure: 'The Lost World Jurassic Park'
I recently delved into Michael Crichton's 'The Lost World Jurassic Park,' expecting a thrilling ride akin to its predecessor. However, my experience was a mixed bag, punctuated by both moments of fascination and frustration. #### A Slow Burn From the outset, the book takes a while to find its footing. It wasn't until I was about 125 pages in that the real action kicked off. This slow start made the initial chapters feel like a slog, as I waded through the setup, eagerly anticipating the excitement promised by the premise. #### Intellectual Insights One of the unexpected highlights was Ian Malcolm's monologues on evolution. These insights were, at times, more captivating than the actual storyline. Malcolm's reflections provided a thoughtful backdrop, offering depth and provoking contemplation amidst the unfolding chaos. #### A Disappointing Conclusion As the story progressed, I found myself increasingly engaged, only to be let down by the ending. It felt abrupt and rushed, as if Crichton had run out of steam and needed a quick wrap-up. The resolution seemed cheap, almost as if it was shoehorned in without a satisfying build-up or explanation, leaving me feeling somewhat cheated. #### Lackluster Descriptions Crichton's descriptive passages often fell short of painting a vivid picture. The frequent use of lazy descriptors, such as "crazy," was disappointing. This reliance on simplistic language detracted from the immersion and left much to be desired in terms of world-building and atmosphere. #### Telling Over Showing Another recurring issue was Crichton's habit of telling rather than showing. This was particularly evident when it came to character emotions. Instead of letting readers infer feelings through actions and dialogue, Crichton often opted for direct statements, which flattened the emotional impact. #### Thrilling Action Sequences Despite these shortcomings, the action sequences involving dinosaurs were a high point. They were well thought out and gripping, delivering the thrills and tension that fans of the series crave. These moments showcased Crichton's knack for crafting compelling, edge-of-your-seat scenarios. #### Outdated Concepts Given the book's age, it's no surprise that some of the ideas about dinosaurs are now outdated. While this isn't the book's fault, it does make certain aspects feel a bit antiquated compared to modern scientific understanding. #### Final Thoughts Overall, I enjoyed 'The Lost World Jurassic Park,' but it pales in comparison to the original. It offered moments of brilliance and excitement, yet was hampered by a slow start, lackluster descriptions, and a rushed ending. #### Pros and Cons **Pros:** - Ian Malcolm's insightful monologues on evolution - Well-crafted and exciting action sequences with dinosaurs **Cons:** - Slow start, with real action not commencing until 125 pages in - Rushed and unsatisfying ending - Lack of detailed descriptions and overuse of lazy descriptors - Frequent telling rather than showing in character emotions - Outdated ideas about dinosaurs due to the book's age In conclusion, 'The Lost World Jurassic Park' is worth a read for fans of the series, but don't expect it to reach the heights of the first book.

I had seen both of the Jurassic Park films based on the novels and had enjoyed them. I finally got around to reading the novels and was surprised at how different the books were. The film's were made family friendly with neat endings. The books are thrilling page turnovers, that are fascinating. The Lost World in particular is much different from the film. Like Jurassic Park, it is one hell of a novel. Three quarters of this book is not in the film, and it is even more thrilling and realistic. The events on the island are fast paced and incredible. I love the fact that Ian Malcolm is a bachelor and there isn't much romance between him and Sarah Harding. Sarah is a real action hero in this book with a much larger role than in the film. There are two kids in this story who are both educated and intelligent and are helpful in this novel, unlike the the kids in the Jurassic Park novel. The boy Tim was smart, but the girl Alex was annoying as hell. Author Crichton includes his well researched theories and scientific information along with thoughtful discussions on the nature of man and our impact on the planet. While the novelization of Jurassic Park included this as well, this is more of a roller coaster ride. I preferred the novelization of Jurassic Park (the first film), I enjoy both film version and the novel for the Lost World. I would've loved to see films based on the novelizations of both books, James Cameron would have done them justice instead of reorganizing them to be family-friendly. A fantastic read, though I wish an epilogue was added since this book ends rather abruptly. So pleased that there is now an unabridged audiobook copy. Scott Brick is brilliant on this as usual.

What a fantastic writer! It’s amazing how he was ahead of his time and updated on the latest knowledges when the book was written.

This is what a bestseller novel should read like. Captivating, enlightening, thought provoking and entertaining to the very last page. Crichtons best by far. I am not a fan of Jurassic Park the novel. But The Lost World is a masterpiece.
