AMD Ryzen™ 7 9700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor

Wanted to buy a 9800X3D, but they went out of stock right as I went to buy, so I opted for the 9700X. Managed to pick this up for $285 via an Amazon deal, and it has more than paid itself off. It's not an X3D CPU, so its gaming performance isn't going to win any awards, but what is there is still fantastic. I have only managed to max out this CPU in Blender and synthetic tests, not games: sandbox games, open worlds (e.g. Abiotic Factor), and VR—including Into the Radius 2, which runs in UE5—just can't push this CPU to its limit. If your primary focus is gaming and cores/thread counts don't need to reach the stars, buy the Ryzen 5 9600X, the older 7600X3D, or even wait for the upcoming 9600X3D. The 9600X and 9700X are nearly identical in gaming. I bought the 9700X only because I need multithread performance and the 9800X3D was not available for two months. Perhaps the 9700X's one true advantage over the 9800X3D is its TDP; this is a 65W CPU, whereas the 9800X3D is 120W. Besides consuming less power, the thermal load is more easily managed. I had a weird issue for a while where this CPU would spike to its TJMax and throttle when I opened File Explorer, but that was caused by my motherboard having an outdated BIOS, and has since been fixed. This CPU does not include a stock cooler, but this is a plus in my book; I quite enjoyed the Wraith Prism, but other Wraith coolers leave a lot to be desired. I happen to have an AiO on my CPU (Cooler Master PL240 FLUX), but for those on a budget, the Thermalright Peerless Assassin is $30-$40 and will do just as good. This CPU does average high temps; normal idle temps can reach 50°C. This feels really weird, but after the BIOS update, high-load temps take a while to reach 80°. I cannot give overclocking feedback, but it can overclock. PBO can give a little extra performance if necessary, but I have not enabled it yet, and don't intend to for the foreseeable future.

Ryzen 7 9700X I upgraded from a 7600X (6-core) to the 9700X (8-core) and I'm seeing a nice improvement in gaming and video editing. Stays pretty cool with my Noctua NH-U12A chromax.Black 120mm Single-Tower CPU Air Cooler. I used this cooler with the 7600X because that CPU tends to run hot. Probably overkill to use with the 9700X, but I already had it and wasn't buying another cooler. I purchased this CPU as a "Like New - Mint Condition" because Amazon was offering a 15% off discount at the time (June 9, 2026). Total price I paid after tax was $230.95. If the CPU was used, it certainly didn't look like it. No thermal paste residue anywhere on it. It looked new to me and even included the little AMD sticker in the box. Box was even in great shape. Yes, it's always a gamble when ordering anything used, but thankfully, it turned out well for me. Overall, I am happy with my purchase!

This CPU powers my home server, so I deliberately went with the efficient 4nm manufactured processor, with a staggering 65W TDP. It is amazing. Not only it idles at almost no power draw and barely produces any heat, it can still boost up under load and handle anything thrown at it. From technical view in a 24/7 uptime operation, this CPU is unbeatable.

This Ryzen CPU is capable of high end single core performance in the latest games and needs to be paired with low latency, high bandwidth memory. Either 6400MT/s 30 or 32, or 6000MT/s CL28 or 26. The most popular videos showcasing this CPU's performance is from the initial launch period where channels would test the CPU in its 65 watt mode with standard, untweaked memory only running the EXPO profiles and without PBO boosting. But you can push this CPU further by tweaking the infinity fabric speed, maxing out PBO limits (with a good motherboard & CPU Cooler), undervolting all of the cores at their sweet spot, and tightening the primary and secondary timings of the memory even further. I am consistently surprised at how capable this CPU is in the latest and most demanding CPU intensive games after fully tuning the memory subsystem. Games like Gothic 1 Remake, Monster Hunter Wilds, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, and Jedi Survivor; this CPU can push ahead of a 7800X3D running sweet spot 6000MT/s CL30 memory in a good amount of these titles that care more about IPC and frequency after tuning the CPU. *HERE'S THE REALITY** BUY the 7800X3D if you are building new in 2026/2027 and spend money on cheaper DDR5 RAM with looser timings (X3D CPUs experience negligible effects to slower memory timings compared to non X3D chips) I bought this CPU in the first quarter of 2025, well before the memory crisis that skyrocketed RAM prices, SSD prices, and eventually GPU prices for some models. It was good value for me at the time over the 7800X3D. I got it on sale as well as with a Monster Hunter Wilds game code voucher. Though I was never able to actually redeem the voucher because it expired by the time I got all of my parts to build my PC. It was objectively a good deal at the time because the 32GB of DDR5 6400MT/s CL30 RAM I bought was cheap at $104.99. It doesn't make much sense to get this system in 2026 or early 2027 unless you are coming from a 7600, 8000G series, and are already on AM5 and you want to do some moderate productivity tasks on top of gaming while saving as many dollars as you can. If you just plan on gaming and building new on AM5 or getting a drop in upgrade from an integrated GPU, get the 7800X3D instead.

The Ryzen 7 9700X really packs a punch for its size and power requirements, delivering excellent performance while still being easy to cool. One of the things I particularly like about this processor is that you can reliably pair it with a large air cooler and have a very capable, low-maintenance system. There’s no pump to worry about failing over time, which means you can essentially “set it and forget it” and enjoy years of reliable performance. For someone who isn't an experienced high-end PC user, I think this is an especially appealing option. A good air cooler is simple, dependable, and requires very little maintenance compared with an AIO liquid cooler. The 9700X gives you plenty of performance without requiring an overly complicated cooling setup, making it a great choice for a reliable gaming or productivity PC. Overall, if you want a processor that packs a serious punch while keeping the rest of the system straightforward and dependable, the 9700X is an easy recommendation.

For years I have mostly used Intel processors, and a few AMD processors. This time, AMD fit my budget better so I picked this processor. It has been a good choice. I am happy with the performance, and I would absolutely recommend it. I am using it for mostly development purposes and not for gaming, so I can't comment on its gaming capabilities but I think it is quite powerful in that respect as well. When getting a processor, pay attention to the built in graphical support. Since I am not a gamer, the built in graphical support in the processor was important for me (I wasn't planning on using a GPU card and was relying on using the display ports on the motherboard). Thsi particular AMD Ryzen 7 had that capability so, for me, it was an excellent choice. My experience is very positive.

Got this during Amazon Prime Day as I did want to wait another month or two to finish PC build as current PC is on life support. Pleasantly surprised at how well it works and the performance is not to far behind the 7800X3D and 9800X3D. Also, no known issues with frying motherboards like those X3D chips.

Très satisfait de mon Ryzen 7 9700X. Je l'ai installé dans ma nouvelle configuration. Il répond parfaitement à mes besoins, aussi bien pour le gaming que pour une utilisation en multitâche. Les performances sont très bonnes et le processeur reste particulièrement intéressant. Dans les jeux, il offre d'excellentes performances. J'apprécie aussi le fait qu'il ne soit pas particulièrement compliqué à refroidir par rapport à des processeurs plus énergivores. Les points positifs : Très bonnes performances en gaming et en multitâche Plateforme AM5 Bon rapport qualité/prix Chauffe peu Pour mon utilisation, c'est un excellent choix.
