Chess Structures: A Grandmaster Guide

First of all, the cover of the book is simply superb.The content is very instructive.It's basically a one stop guide to many of the major chess openings,how to deal with them and how to play them successfully.The most important factors concerning each position are written in accordance with the author's experience(and studying of more than 20000 games).The annotations are heavy in the most instructive moment of the book,but lighter when its just the won endgame/decisive advantage scenario.I really hope a 'Part 2' of this book comes out concerning(as many reviewers have said) the McCutcheon and Burn Variations of the French,Exchange Ruy/Berlin,Tromp,Semi-Slav Gambits and such openings.This book has been a pleasure to read and learn from.

Marcelo Rios has come out with an authentic textbook on openings. It systematically answers the question: how will the pawn structure appear after I take up a particular opening? Then Rios answers with well-illustrated games what prospects the two sides have in a given pawn structure. The purpose of the treatise is clearly outlined and then achieved. Highly recommended for tournament players.

Excellent livre qui est très bien écrit avec les points clés. Les résumés et les exemples de parties sont assez récents. Un livre incontournable pour tous joueurs qui souhaitent avancé dans sa compréhension de ce jeu

This book improved my game immediately. There is a 20 minute video of the author giving a lesson in on planning and pawn structures St. Louis Chess club , that also had a direct impact on my game and allowed me to beat my Chesscomputer (Milano pro - 2007 elo) on tournament level, something that is normally very hard (for me ) to achieve. Actually that was what got me interested to buy this book. And I have not been disappointed. The repetition of a) the breakdown of the pawn structures b) the standard plans for white and black plus the other general ideas leave some trace in one's own mind as you start to evaluate positions the same way. The selected games are very well chosen to make clear a certain theme. I only got to the Caro- Kann formations at the moment but as said, I racked up some nice victories in tournament play and computer chess already implementing the knowledge from this book. Keep out an eye for the next book from this author, I definitely will.

The books takes the most common structures, consolidates the main ideas for both sides, and provides full sample games to illustrate implementation. This is useful and efficient for an intermediate player like me (I'm around 1800-2000 in rating). The book focuses on concepts and application rather than memorization of variations. I wish more opening books did what this book does. It is crucial to know your opponent's plans well and to thwart them, rather than to only focus on what you want to do or your novelty. Additionally, even if you do get your ideal position, it often takes 20 or 30 more moves before you can realize the advantage; therein lies the value of showing and annotating full games. Converting is hard. Some minor critiques: The author's analyses do not always match up with stockfish, though this doesn't diminish the book's value. For example, in one of the games the author describes one of young Carlsen's moves/plans to convert an advantage as inaccurate, while that move is actually Stockfish 14 NNUE's top recommendation. Also, the book would profit from adding example games for certain structures (for example, more black wins in the Caro Kann structure). Sometimes appears to me that the author harbors a bias against some openings/structures, or that some structures required more attention than was given.

Muy muy recomendable, creo que es el mejor libro de ajedrez que he visto nunca, sobre todo si tienes alto nivel, pero cualquiera puede aprender de este libro, te explica los planes de cada apertura y lo que debe intentar el negro y el blanco, eso es impagable.
